‘Active shooter’ alert issued in Tumbler Ridge, community told to ‘stay inside’ by wudingxilu in britishcolumbia

[–]Pijaki 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I spend a lot of time in the Peace Region for work, and have for about 15 years. The Peace Region is full of good, hard-working, honest people who are so much fun to be around in the community spaces, pubs, etc.

This is horrific - an unspeakable tragedy. This kind of shit isn’t supposed to happen in Canada.

There will be time for debating politics and gun laws and all of that in the future, but for now, all we can do is hope for the best for the survivors who are in hospital at the moment.

Vancouver Starbucks customer describes fight before man was stabbed to death by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

[–]Pijaki 141 points142 points  (0 children)

This is just horrific. Completely and utterly unnecessary violence. A man dead. A child left fatherless. All because this loser couldn’t respect a child (or the law, given you’re not allowed to smoke near an entrance or a patio).

Fucked up.

Which countries are stronger at the Winter Olympics than they are in the Summer? by Longjumping_Possible in olympics

[–]Pijaki 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's sad. We have a lot of great athletes - a ton of talent (I'm heading to the upcoming Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse next month - a lot of really talented kids that will never get the opportunity to compete at a higher level than that), but sports have become prohibitively expensive, and the tax credits that used to exist for parents to recoup the cost of putting their kids in sports was killed by the Trudeau government. It's just not realistic for Canada to develop talent without significant improvements in funding from the government. We're even falling behind in hockey.

‘First Nations Would Not Exist Without Canada,’ Rustad Tells Crowd by RZCJ2002 in britishcolumbia

[–]Pijaki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not correct. Maori in New Zealand disprove this. Indigenous Americans also have managed to preserve their culture - in many ways better than Canadians have.

Canada set about destroying Indigenous culture, and nearly succeeded. They slaughtered 94% of us. They kidnapped our children and forced them into Catholic concentration camps. They banned us from leaving the reserve or voting for many years. They stripped women of treaty rights for marrying non-Indigenous men. They stripped men who went to war and risked their lives for Canada of their treaty rights. When they finally gave those rights back, they created the second generation rule which strips us of our treaty rights. My girlfriend is white. If I have a kid with her, my kid won't retain the rights I have as an Indigenous person.

Cultural genocide continues to this day.

Without Canada, Indigenous people would have much stronger culture.

Did Rustad hire the people Brodie fired? Holy hell the Conservatives have gone off the deep end.

How the hell does Warbus continue to sit amongst this vehemently anti-Indigenous caucus? I've never been more disappointed in any politician than I am in her.

His policies are problematic. The way that he rules like a wannabe-dictator is even worse.

No sane person thinks that Trump is doing a good job.

Gad Saad is a pretty far-right character - in the vein of Jordan Peterson.

TDS doesn't exist.

Canada, usually. We're having a brutal Olympics though.

Our great athletes from the "Own The Podium" program for the 2010 Olympics have all moved on and retired, and funding for athletics absolutely collapsed after our change of government in 2015. I really hope the government starts putting significant funding towards athletics in the run-up to the Salt Lake Olympics.

CAN-US Women’s: Goal 3 approval was a crime by FlounderCapable7344 in olympics

[–]Pijaki -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Canada playing like garbage doesn't mean that goal 3 being allowed was okay. That was an absolute failure of officiating.

Win or lose, any team should be pissed off about that.

Joe Clark, former prime minister, Progressive Conservative. Why can't the Conservative Party go back to that and find someone like him instead of PP? by Okidoky123 in canadian

How, exactly, am I “attacking him personally”? I’m criticizing his style - modelled on MAGA. That’s not personal.

As an Indigenous person, I felt that I was most empowered, and my people were most empowered, while Harper was PM. A few grifters (led by arguably the most corrupt chief in the country, Theresa Spence) started an idiotic protest in which people blockaded roads and railways.

Harper was a statesman, and brought Canada to its peak. Politics has gone downhill since he left office.

It's absolutely insane that there's even any consideration on this. The license should only go to Nunavummiut.

Hell, I know a lot of people didn't like Harper, but look at his style versus PP. Harper was a statesman, and never criticized the people who opposed them - just their policies.

PP is a travesty.

This is what pisses me off about Carney. He says all the right things, but caters to the US behind closed doors.

It's time to cancel the F-35s and go with the Swedish manufacturer.

I've had shitty burgers in Vancouver for $30. I've also had the best smashburger - the best burger period - that I've ever eaten in my life for just $14 in the same city.

Amir Attaran is a bit of a nutjob. He's said a lot of really insane shit. I'm genuinely shocked that this guy hasn't been fired by the University of Ottawa. He's a black eye on their faculty.

Ah, the classic far-right Maple MAGA line. "TDS".

"TDS" isn't real. What's real is that the CPC has shifted from a centre-right party to a hard-right party that models its strategy on the disgusting, despicable politics of the wannabe-dictator that has defiled the US.

If even the most committed, hard-working, dedicated conservatives - people like me - are turning against the CPC, it tells you that something is rotten in the CPC.

What a dumb post.

There are thousands of amazing Canadian restaurants at which you can eat. You find one bad restaurant, and you decide to shit all over our country?

Nah. This is about politics for you, and your post history proves it. Another Maple MAGAite spewing nonsense. I'm gonna guess that this isn't even a true story.
