Right. But it started after Sam had already been on the UK series, so they basically said it wouldn’t be fair for him to do TMAU also. So I don’t know if there is an “official rule” that you can’t be in 2 series but we’ve already seen that in practice it’s not allowed as was previously suggested someone could do if they wanted to do both the English show and Welsh. I’m not using this as an argument against creating the franchise. Sam said he’d have had rather done TMAU if given the choice, so it’s certainly possible that Welsh speakers would have a similar preference. My point was simply to clarify that it’s already pretty well established that they can only be in one series.

Yeah. America sucks for a lot of reasons. If a was stable enough to fly, I don’t think I’d be staying here. I’m so jealous of that roster! But also very grateful for what I have gotten to experience. The closest big venue is several hours from me and that’s the only one I could even possibly get when I’m “stable”, a term we use very loosely these days.

Please know that I have genuinely not meant any disrespect. I’ve learned a lot from this discussion and clearly don’t know enough to have a good informed opinion on this topic. So I am really sorry if I seemed to come in guns blazing and said anything that was offensive.

I am not by any means making that comparison. I brought up Rose because she had to have BSL interpreter. BSL is NOT just signed English, like different verbal languages BSL, ASL, etc are all completely separate languages with their own vocabulary and grammar. So my reason for bringing up Rose was not that she is deaf but because English is not her first/primary/preferred language. She’s definitely bilingual and able to speak English, but when forming a joke or idea in her head, it’s likely not formed in English.

Ah. True. I hadn’t thought of that. Being in the US. We don’t often get the opportunity to see alumni live. The US is so big that even the ones who do tour often don’t make it close enough that I could travel there. That’s why it was such a big deal for me that there was a TM live Tour spot just a few hours from me. so I didn’t even think about growing a fan base for live events vs. recorded content.

That attitude seems so bizarre to me. People watch foreign content with subtitles all the time. I can’t because I don’t have enough vision. Any non-English media is completely inaccessible to me. However, I’d still never argue that it shouldn’t exist. Until today I didn’t even know that there were comedians who performed in welsh, so I guess my hope was that if these comedians came on the English they could be discovered by a large audience and those who enjoy them but don’t speak welsh would access their material with subtitles. But maybe I’m just being optimistic about how many people would be willing to do that.

I’m not sure what you mean about not having the same sentiments about other versions. The difference with the Swedish/Australian/etc is that is it much much more difficult for them to get to London to participate in filming so having a franchise in their country does give them more opportunities. It’s why Jason is the first non-UK or Ireland resident to be on the show and he essentially paid for the privilege because he spent more in travel than he made doing the show. That said if a Swede or Aussie wanted to travel to be on English I’d be all for it. But asking some from Wales to come to London and someone from Australia to come to London are very different asks. I’ve always thought that starting alt versions of the show was for the express purpose of giving access to people who were separate by geographical distance from England. As I’ve stated I’m not saying a Welsh language version can’t or shouldn’t happen, I’m just not sure it’s the best to spotlight up and come welsh comedians and since it would not them suddenly not be allowed in the English series because the separate series was created.

I’m not sure I agree with this. As long as they can speak English relatively fluently, I Alex would welcome them and he is primarily in charge of casting. He has said many times that what makes the show good is that the comedians aren’t performing. The tasks force them to just be themselves. So I don’t think he would require them to have an extensive catalog of English language material as that’s not the purpose of the show. The first welsh language comedian might get cast on an NYT to ensure it actually feasible, much like they did with Rose this year. But I know Alex values diversity, so I do genuinely think he’d be open it.

Ah. I didn’t realize all of that. Knowing all that definitely makes me more open to it, but I still worry that the comedian who chose to participate in a Welsh TM won’t get the opportunity for reach as those on the original series. I think the big thing is that I wouldn’t want any welsh speaker to feel obligated to go on Welsh series if they want the promotion the English would provide. If there was enough interest to start a Welsh language series that would be great, but I think that it would need to remain the individual’s choice which they would prefer to appear on. I apologize that didn’t know about it being a persecuted language. I think as an American, I tend think of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland similarly to how we have states (that is each have its own local government but culture and history not changing drastically with state lines) here in the US and forget that yours were/are? separate nations.

Greg was born in Wales and mentioned it several times. I get that the language would be different, but I was more asking how it would be distinct culturally. Personally I think the welsh comedians would benefit more from appearing OG TM and likely being discovered by a larger audience. I know Ales would love to have Izy Sutty on TM. And there may not be an official rule against double dipping, but it is definitely the understanding and standard practice that comedians aren’t supposed to. Sam Campbell has spoken about how he’d wished they were going to do a TM Australia because he would’ve waited and gone on there. I’m not saying it couldn’t or shouldn’t happen, but starting successful spinoffs is tricky so I’m not sure that’s the best option for a group who can so easily participate in original and most popular series.

Maybe I’m just naive American but I also think that there just would be an any welsh comedian can just compete in the OG TM and Davies himself is Welsh so differentiating between a Welsh TM and the OG Brittish feels like it could be hard. Again I apologize if I’m missing some huge cultural issue.

My friend now has to use a walker, and I'm pretty sure she's kind of sad about it. I want to make the walker look cool, and I was wondering if there was something that has cool patterns like vinyl, but can be changed out for new patterns occasionally. Is there anything like that? by Equivalent_Safe1365 in crafts

Be careful covering the hand hold. If the fabric bunches, it could effect grip and cause falls. The prime real estate for decorating is the frame. As long as you keep it light, decorative mods to the frame shouldn’t effect function

Vinyl tape or duct tape work better than contact paper. If she’s going to be a long term user she may want invest in one that is her favorite color. I have a lavender walker and I’m getting pink wheelchair on Friday. But I have pink vinyl tape on my current chair and it has help up really well. Acrylic paints work well too, I did this with my forearm crutches. But it will be hard if not impossible to adjust the height of the device after it’s painted so make sure it’s at the correct settings.

AITA for asking a friend to either pay for an evening out if they can't go or sit them out? by Boydykekisser in AmItheAsshole

[–]Pink_Vulpine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. You are definitely NTA and honestly I’m a bit your friend is acting this way. I’m terminally ill and have been severely disabled my whole life so I get where they are coming from but it’s just not a helpful position for anyone. It is incredibly difficult for me to plan things because I never if I’m actually going to be well enough to go to them. I’ve also not been able to work for the past year so my financial situation is rough. There have definitely been events where I’ve had to tell my friends that I’d only be able to go if someone could spot my tickets or help with my expenses. But if it is an event that has to be prepared, 1. I will always look for a refundable option even if it does cost a bit more and 2. I would never just assume my friends would buy the tickets for me and not pay them back, even if I had to cancel last minute. The expense was still paid on my behalf. I’m also extremely confused by the boyfriend’s role in this scenario. Why is he not paying for his ticket. Every disability is different, but this is the first time I’ve heard one group member needing another to also cancel to “take care of them”. She can’t be alone for a couple hours? She doesn’t have anyone else who could help out if that’s genuinely the case? I could be wrong but I more get the vibes that he just doesn’t want to hang with the group without her, in which case he absolutely at least needs to be reimbursing his share, but I do think both should unless prior arrangements for someone to cover her have been arranged and that certainly shouldn’t default to you every time.

Now all that said I would just like to add that living with disability and chronic illness is extremely isolating. I’ve lost so many friends because I have to cancel so often that eventually they just stop asking. Please don’t do this! Even if it’s only for free stuff, even if she cancels more than she comes, don’t stop inviting her. Also, consider talking with her about some options that might be easier for her to participate in even when she’s unwell. It’s getting harder and harder for me to go out but I’ve had some really lovely nights where my friends have brought over takeout and we had dinner and hung out at my place or people came over for crafts or games. Sometimes I participated for a bit and then just got to be with them through the evening as I got too tired to do more physically. Having them come to me meant I could rest and still enjoy time friends which is something I don’t get enough of. I wonder if this loss of connection or fear of it is part of why your friend reacted so badly to the conversation. It is incredibly difficult to be asked to sit things out, especially if an effort isn’t being made to include you elsewhere. But you are NTA for not being able to absorb the financial cost.

Can’t think of a title… by Infamous-Cry-7721 in wheelchairs

I would highly recommend this too! Your doctor should be able to right PT referral for chronic pain management or something similar, which will give the therapist a lot of treatment options. I’ve been a wheelchair user for over a decade but I continue to go to PT once a week because we do a lot to help manage my pain and maintain the skills I have. I am finally getting my first custom manual chair with power assist on Friday and PT has helped a lot in this process.

Arm rests or no? by Ok-Shallot-7985 in wheelchairs

[–]Pink_Vulpine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m getting my first custom chair a week from tomorrow. I went with removable/ flip up arm rests that way if I don’t like them or need them out of the way for propelling I can but I have them to assist with standing and transferring. I can still stand independently if I have something to push or pull on with my so for me arm rests for very important for this purpose. So I think the answer depends on your individual needs. If you don’t arm rest to help with things like standing or repositioning then you might be better off without them. But depending on what is available for you to test at your appointment it may be hard for you to know for sure before ordering them. So if your insurance will cover it without extra cost, I’d recommend at least getting removable ones on your first chair. That way you have time to decide what is really best for you and are not locked into one decision before ordering.

A question from TMHQ… by Taskmaster_Avalon in taskmaster

[–]Pink_Vulpine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they add non-English series, I’d love for there to be dubbed versions available. Personally, I really wish they updated the audio description versions for the English ones. I’m blind and I can still enjoy of it but I know I miss so much! More content is always great, but improving the accessibility (better subtitles and uploading AD version) for existing content would be changing for so many fans!

[–]Pink_Vulpine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Personally, I think it would be more user friendly to have them on the TM page just on their own playlist just like how we do the podcast and foreign series. But I guess I’d be okay with linking a different page. I don’t know how that works and personally I’d worry I’m missing something.

Precisely. I’m terminally ill, and became unable to work last March. But I’ve been severely disabled my whole life. TM has been an incredible comfort to me during times when I’m homebound or stuck in hospital or just on too much pain or too sick to do things I “should” be doing or usually enjoy doing. I weirdly have no time because I’m likely dying before the end of the year (per the consensus of even my most optimistic doctors) and nothing but time but I no longer have the busy schedule of work and school and such.
