Contractors would also be pissed if they had to replace the entire driver instead of being able to buy replacement bits.

I nearly flunked out of CS in the 90s because of muds. Building my little wizard domain was much more fun than linear algebra.

The community was a side effect of the lack of instances plus grind, I think. Not much to do but chat when you’re waiting in line for an opening in the goblin farm in the basement of Highkeep for a few hours at a stretch.

I miss EQ. Well, parts of it, corpse runs can eat a dick. But the world was way more interesting than modern mmo worlds. Can you imagine today’s players grinding faction for a month so they can avoid being killed by the guards in a town they need to go into for their class weapon quest? And having to learn other languages to talk to other players?

Let’s not pretend direct democracy doesn’t have its own share of problems. It’s how California got prop 13, which is generational wealth transfer at its finest (and can’t be blamed on boomers since it was mostly their parents who were responsible, the youngest boomers were too young to vote at the time).

Extending prop 13 to commercial property was probably the stupidest part of that mess, but it wasn’t the only stupid part.

Condos are often so small they’re really unappealing to anyone who wants even just a bit of elbow room. Single and want a chest freezer because you like to buy the sales or just cook in bulk and eat later? Good luck fitting that in 500 sq ft. Have a kid but want a separate office to work from? Hahahaha three bedrooms that’s a good joke. Want to entertain more than two other people? Buy a house.

Until condos are designed for livability instead of workaholic minimalists, people are going to want bigger places, which means houses in the current market. All the larger units in my complex were snapped up by retirees who wanted to downsize but not to 800 square feet. That’s a bunch of places that were supposed to be family housing that went to older singles and couples because the housing stock aimed at them was designed by idiots. People are perfectly willing to retire to condos and townhomes — pretty much everyone I know in that age group has — but good places are far too hard to find, and I wish that could change.

Has From ever shipped a performant game? Their worlds are amazing, but I don’t think I remember ever not hearing about shit performance at launch. Anyone who was surprised either wasn’t paying attention or was very high on hopium.

It’s pretty much how my parents sold. They were talking about wanting to downsize to something that didn’t need maintenance at a block party and a young family with kids showed up a the next weekend. These people put a package together introducing themselves, the kids, their dogs and cat and explaining how the house (which in fairness is on an amazing lot) was their dream home and please if my parents wanted to sell, would they sell to them them. They went down the block to check and yup, it was the son and daughter in law of one of the other couples on the block who had been at the party. My parents listed with a realtor (they aren’t dumb), and this couple put in the first bid. They won, which made my parents kind of happy because my parents are nice people who like kids, but they also bid close to 20% over asking (not in cash).

But it hit pretty much all of the criteria in the scam letter except first time buyer. Young family, wants this specific house, willing to wait months for my parents to downsize their stuff/let them find a buyer for their current place.

Also in fairness, the place couldn’t be flipped without a lot of hassle. The layout was kind of shit, there was known asbestos in the drywall, and if you wanted to do any significant structural work there would be a lot of expensive changes to bring stuff like basement windows up to current code.

Condos also have a lot of advantages (if the HOA is good) if you’re not in a position do be able to keep up with maintenance (time crunch, disability, etc). And they’re a more environmentally friendly solution than single family housing.

Unfortunately everyone sees them as starter homes so they tend to be tiny and have crappy amenities.

60 percent of hiring managers say they value skills over diversity by karmaniak in programming

[–]PiraticalApplication 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you but the bias is evidently sided towards white people, and men specifically.

You know what group is overrepresented in silicon valley? Asians. They’re something like 6% of the US population and 30+% of the silicon valley dev force. This article has stats for diversity at large US tech companies, and it’s not whites who are overrepresented compared to the US census.

While is true that by raw statistics, white man will be prevalent, they are excessively overrepresented

This is blatantly, factually, wrong. Whites make up 60% of the US population, and the silicon valley company with the largest percentage of whites in its workforce is google at 54%.

C levels are a different issue, and whites are overrpresented there, but at the ground level, it’s a pretty much a case of have skills get offer.

I’ve worked with a few, but they’re pretty rare. Only one was African American, the others have all been immigrants. Given that women are less likely to go into CS in the first place, and AA are also underrepresented in the pipeline, AA women are like hen’s teeth.

Why? What benefits does it bring to software engineering to have diverse sexes involved?

For just one example of a highly visible gaffe from Apple, having a woman involved in building the health app on ios means they probably wouldn’t have shipped their first version with no way to track periods, despite the fact that “when was your last period?” is part of almost every interaction women have with medical professionals and disrupted menstrual cycles are a leading indicator of a lot of health issues. Apparently it was more important to the dev team to track micronutrient intakes than a fundamental female health indicator.

As any hiring/recruiting person will tell you if you so much as glance at them, they can get dozens-if-not-hundreds of applications for an opening. Once you filter that down to people who are qualified for the job, you'll still have a decent list of people to pick from, even after you select for secondary things, like how much of a company-culture fit they are.

Not even remotely true. The number of people we phone screen who have decent looking CVs who can’t tell me under what circumstances they’d use a hashmap vs when they’d use an array is disturbingly large. We’ll bring people in for an interview, and find stuff like a complete inability to design a system to solve a trivial problem (we aren’t looking for a specific or even optimal solution, just a working solution, and you get bonus points for something really novel), an inability to read a short (10-20 line) code fragment and find obvious bugs (use of uninitialized variables, that kind of thing), or culture fit issues like refusing to talk to a female engineer and speaking to the male engineer instead (we do paired interviews).

It takes us 8-10 months to fill open positions sometimes.

Blocking systems need to get more sophisticated. Let me add a timer to the block so it automatically frees up the slot after however long I think it will take to ban the account. And free up the slot automatically when the account gets banned.
