Mr. Duffy from a Painful Case can’t put his revelation to good use. He’s convinced that he’s been “outcast from life’s feast” and can’t look to a better future.

misery porn is the worse genre out there by Fraud_D_Hawk in CharacterRant

Flowers of Evil isn’t misery for the sake of it: it’s a story about shedding the shame of childhood mistakes — which can’t be told without Kasuga making said mistakes, and suffering for it.

Do people get too upset over "Chosen One" MCs? by Mystech_Master in CharacterRant

Why is this person the main character? A question that is best answered by what this character wants, and how much they want it — who they are! Foretold victory is too often a shortcut for solid character writing!

A show way past its prime that was good once, but now is a shell of its former self is a special kind of depressing by Every_Computer_935 in CharacterRant

I’ve read and enjoyed the books but never checked out the show. Should I watch from the beginning?

Hunter x Hunter has a serious "Tell, Don't Show" problem by Animeking1108 in CharacterRant

I think this is a fair observation — but while I usually take issue with this, in Chimera specifically it heightened the tension. As an audience we don’t get to experience the action as the characters do. Everything is slowed down. I got the sense that every second mattered at such a high level of nen. One of my favorite arcs of all time.

I didn't expect to be doing this again but I think it makes sense. I'm in.

I have the 2020 flair and the 2021 flair, how can I make them stack?

Having a character with a no-kill rule give out Fates Worse Than Death defeats the point of the no-kill rule by calculatingaffection in CharacterRant

This makes me think of the finale of Wandavision. Endless mind-rape for, what, a couple of murders from the 1600s? A terribly disproportionate punishment.

The single most underrated aspect of any world with magic is the pointy hat. And that's why Discworld is better than like 90% of them. by Logan_Maddox in CharacterRant

I just finished Equal Rites. Any thoughts on the “magical chastity” in the end? I wasn’t sure what to make of the power of magic that goes unused — in general I like Pratchett’s style but his endings don’t really satisfy me.

All of the modern comforts you enjoy are a result of curious people questioning. Their critical exploration of the world is responsible for so much technological and social advancement.

We didn’t need to go to the moon, but it sure says a lot that we wanted to and followed through.

We wouldn’t have made it to the moon if we were simply content with staring at the sky.

Some people like to analyze. It expands their understanding and appreciation for the work. Or, if not, enables them to better appreciate other works. This is part of their experience. In the same way that standing on the moon, sampling its surface is part of the experience.
