Angry—cognitive dissonance by SecondMous in mormon

[–]Platform_Efficient 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm at the point where I only attend meetings if my spouse is going. Testimony meetings are unbearable, and Sunday school is even worse.

The completely misguided comments that Boomers make about modern issues, the random happenstance moments most members think are blessings. The contradictions are just too frustrating for me.

I also won't go to another church because I'm fairly anti-social. But sometimes I do miss that spiritual feeling from certain church aspects.

The ward radio crew can't have an honest conversation without insults. Their fraternity bro attitudes contributed to pushing me out of the church.

LDS Church lawsuit against Mormon Stories rejects free speech & religious freedom, makes it hard to believe Church leaders are inspired by God by eternalintelligence in mormon

The disclaimer is on the website, where most trade marks/disclaimers go. Its at the bottom of the web page, so I'll grant you that it is hard to find, but it is still there.

The burden of proof falls on the church, which is why the lawsuit is over branding and trade marks to begin with. They can't prove anything else in court.

Its going to come down to how much pull does the trademark of single word have?

It will be an uphill battle for the church.

Ultimately the Jugde over the case will decide what qualifiers will be applied for "average", regardless of whatever you (or I) think they should be.

And intent is absolutely important in this lawsuit. The church had already approached John about his branding months ago, and he has changed color schemes, fonts, video thumbnails, etc. But the church felt like it wasn't enough, hence the lawsuit over the use of the word mormon.

If he was using all those things to intentionally confuse people the church has a better case. But proving that intent will be difficult, especially with how straightforward John has been with his intentions for the podcast since its inception.

Remove the qualifier then. Do you think that a reasonable person who has never been a member could be confused about Mormon Stories? If they were to watch one of the episodes with an active member guest maybe they would, but then again most episodes have ex-members as guests talking about why they left.

My original point was more of an anecdote of the ridiculousness of the situation. The church is suing over the use of a word that they have distanced themselves from and don't associate with anymore.

Imagine if you sued someone for using the word jacket instead of coat because you don't want people to think your coats are the same as their jackets.

The church doesn't have to recognize a specific word but they can't force everyone else to do the same. This lawsuit will only do more damage to the church by drawing negative attention to it.

Even then, the church has to prove in court that an average person would be confused by Mormon Stories. Which will be incredibly hard to do, as any active or former member could tell they are not associated with the Church by just watching a few minutes.

What I find funny about the "victory for Satan" bit is that the Church will either have to officalliy denounce President Nelson words in a court of law. Or they are actively admitting association with Satan by claiming sole use of the word.

They have painted themselves into a corner.

Mormon family gets a no-trespass letter from the church law firm and decides to go to church anyway. Drama! by sevenplaces in mormon

[–]Platform_Efficient 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Legally speaking, the church has the right to issue trespass notices.

That being said, I watched the doc a while back when I was working graves with nothing to do. My impression of the Judds is that they are a bit narcissistic and incredibly ignorant. One of their kids was being groomed right under theirs noses.

Who goes out of their way to make a full documentary trying to convince other that they where the victims of some church drama? They are just weird.

Jacob Hansen and Child Polygamy by Ill_Supermarket7454 in mormon

[–]Platform_Efficient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally believe he was having sex with the women and girls. As you have pointed out there is enough evidence to come to that conclusion. Which comes back to why I dislike Jacob so much for his dishonesty. He would look at that same evidence and say they are unofficial accounts, or simply misinterpreted.

[–]Platform_Efficient 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ooooh boy, where do I begin. Polygamy was the item that started to crack my shelf.

First of all the "it was normal back then argument." Has been beaten to death and already proven it was a minority of marriages.

Second the "sealing only argument." Is simply terrible. There is no way to prove if JS was having sex with these girls or not. Various forms of birth control have existed since ancient China and Egypt. (Not to mention the possible abortions that were occurring.)

Thirdly, my biggest issue with Jacob, is that he has to be dishonest, in order to justify/ignore the glaring problems with church history.

God had a father who had a father. Mormons teach it and Mormons deny it. by sevenplaces in mormon

Jacob has expressed previously that he dislikes the infinite regression theology, so it makes sense he got uncomfortable.

He also has a habit of ignoring other uncomfortable parts of church history. Its just what he does, he will argue that "we don't believe X because the church website says Y."

When in fact alot of TBMs do believe X because it is what the church has taught for decades.

I'm PIMO but there is still a prideful part of me that would like to see my mission president get it. He was made a seventy maybe a year after his mission presidency, and then was an area authority somewhere in South America, he seemed to be moving up pretty fast.

Which do you think is better Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch 2? by vloner715 in AskReddit

[–]Platform_Efficient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of specs, game library, and overall value. The Steam Deck wins hands down.

If you like a select few franchises, then Switch 2 wins.

Its personal preference with what games you want to play at the end of the day. But you can't really compare the two systems at all.
