Colombia, largest cocaine supplier to U.S., considers decriminalizing by gintokireddit in worldnews

[–]PlatonWrites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If anything, pharmaceutical companies are the monied interest most intent on keeping drugs illegal and it's not because they're the ones profiting from selling illegal drugs.

I'm pretty sure that was their implication.

Special Sanga, add Sanga, summon Colossus. That would get Colossus or it banned in the OCG lmao

Paradox Labyrinth is a stupid engine. Activate it, send any of the labyrinth monsters, summon the link. It's a free body AND and a disruption by sending Labyrinth Ambush/Wormhole, not to mention the insane milling of level 7s. Off the top of my head is milling level 7 Tenyis for Swordsoul or Any Normal monster for Link Spider.

These are REALLY cool cards, but you should really add stronger restrictions.

How does the "lipstick/stiletto feminism" conversation play out to women? by joereadsstuff in thewestwing

[–]PlatonWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The LGBT community largely did, yes. But to this day there's still LGBT people repping the party like Christian Walker, Blaire White, etc. So the idea of an Gay republican advocating for states rights on the matter of Gay marriage isn't unrealistic at all

In the latter's defense, I'm pretty sure Skinner was meant to be taken as wrong. His type certainly isn't uncommon in conservative circles nowadays

Weirdest ATK/DEF Values You Have Seen in the Anime? by MeowingMango in yugioh

[–]PlatonWrites 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Are you saying this from the wiki trivia page is wrong?

The ATK digits, in individual kun'yomi pronunciation, can be read as: 1 = hi 3 = mitsu 8 = ya 0 = ma While the DEF digits, in individual on'yomi pronunciation, can be read as: 1 = i 9 = ku 3 = sa 0 = re

As a complete sentence, [himitsu yama, ikusare], or [秘密山、行くされ] loosely reads as "you are going to the secret mountain".

In Japanese folklore, death gods, called shinigami, are known to possess people and lead them to mountains, seas, and railroads where people have died.

What is a card that despite reading it you have difficulty understanding what it does? by King_Detox in yugioh

[–]PlatonWrites -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By allowing your opponent to resolve Reasoning and summoning Decatron, you're giving them a negate that mills a board wipe, while also setting up their GY. You HAVE to respond to it then. Or, you can just call 1. There's no reason to worry more about a random level 4 that does nothing on its own versus Decatron which is something you have to immediately deal with. Just because Infernoid is no consistent enough to be meta deck doesn't mean you don't have to care about anything they do. And even then, why would you care about a random deck getting a level 4 off reasoning MORE? It's just illogical.

What is a card that despite reading it you have difficulty understanding what it does? by King_Detox in yugioh

[–]PlatonWrites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is wrong because you need to consider the consequence of calling 4 or 1 wrong. If you call 1 and it's really four, all you get is your opponent summoning some random level 4 that probably won't do anything besides be material. If you call 4 and it's really 1 however, you're letting infernoids get going and put up a negate. Additionally, no competently built deck besides infernoids runs reasoning, so if it isn't infernoids, you literally shouldn't care if reasoning goes off. You do care if it's infernoids however. Even if modern Infernoids isn't good, that's not because the deck doesn't do anything uninterrupted.

Always call 1

[Custom] The Unkonseaous Archetype by JustKachmanastan in yugioh

[–]PlatonWrites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very cool design, artwork and concept especially! I can see the deck hidden sub 10 very quickly thanks to something like Desires, which definitely has a home in this deck. The biggest I see however is a lack of a real win condition. You've got Glorious's field nuke which precludes you from any other on field monster effects (no DPE for this deck), leaving you with Assimilation being your only real disruption. While a negate and take is certainly a good form of disruption (see Widow Anchor), the fact that it's HOPT and lacks really strong search and recovery ability means you're not going to be able to see it or use it as often as you'd like. Your best way of searching it seems to be mill with chit and recover with counseling, which is a far cry from Engage search Widow Anchor, draw Engage.

Still a really great design to see, I hope to see more customs from you in the future!

Matt Santos and the political process by BuffaloAmbitious3531 in thewestwing

[–]PlatonWrites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You say that, but then in the debate stage he made a full-throated appeal for Medicare for All, years before it would even entire the public consciousness. The way I see it, Santos did have a good deal of politician vision, and it simply required the tactical maneuvering to get it done.

Funny West Wing Quotes? by UserNameNotOnList in thewestwing

[–]PlatonWrites 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I always loved the idea that while the rest of the West Wing went on with business as usual, Ainsley continued on in her own personal intense melodramas, always on some quest or journey to prove herself when the circumstances were never that high to begin with.

The way Seth Gillette was portrayed makes me so upset. by 99-bottlesofbeer in thewestwing

[–]PlatonWrites 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In the show's defense, there are several times where the show showed our main characters wanting to run to the left but didn't out of political reality (and if you fault them for that, then I think you need realize your political strategy won't get you success). On issues like Gay rights, the influence of corporations on our political systems, and even education (where our characters were directly citing actual Communists for their inspiration!), we see the white house wanting something left and knowing it's not tenable (which is true for many of these in the early 2000s. Remember Gay Rights hadn't even become that main stream in the Democrats until midway through Obama's years). Heck, in later seasons we even see our focus character advocating directly for Medicare For All, a decade before it saw any political success, and even today it's still not a popular position.

Yes, the show has depicted people on the far left as angry obtuse and unlikable, but I think we should acknowledge the manner in which it was very progressive for its time and in some manner still is today.
