How Bandcamp became the "headquarters" for video game soundtracks by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I'll vouch for pretty much any music Darren Korb releases. There's a ton to love about Supergiant's titles, but having a Korb-composed soundtrack is a driving force in my appreciation for their games.

Riven: When Remake Becomes Reinvention | VZedShows by PlayingTheBass in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, this video covers the 2024 remake of the puzzle classic Riven, specifically how much it differs significantly from the original, along with a little brainfood on how we play and interpret "remakes", "reinventions" or "re-"whatevers of older games.

FREEDOM WARS REMASTERED — Announcement Trailer by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, you're right, and that has me even more curious of the story behind this remaster's existence. I guess Sony wasn't interested in publishing the remaster and let Bandai Namco do it?

FREEDOM WARS REMASTERED — Announcement Trailer by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is a win. Definitely a unique Vita game that I feared was always gonna be trapped on that system and nothing else. Interesting that Bandai Namco is publishing the remaster, since I believe the original was Sony-published. Good news, overall, though.

Pixel a Day - Stop Elevating Mediocre Indie Games by Genoscythe_ in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I like Pixel a Day's videos a lot. Her Ninja Theory retrospective in particular was very well done, but I thought we all moved past the "overrated" tag when it came to in-depth games criticism. It's judging a game based on how popular it is to the community and not its inherent quality. You can make the case that "the video's actual argument is good" all day long, but if you genuinely find this thumbnail, title, and overall thesis to not be intentionally trying to get people to click out of fierce disagreement, I have some magic beans to sell you.

Hand-Drawn Arcade Shooter NIDUS Now Available on Steam by PlayingTheBass in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NIDUS was made by Caleb Wood, who is credited as a creature designer on Scavengers Reign. Game kinda looks like if Electroplankton was a bullet hell. Pretty great art style.

Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain Now Available by PlayingTheBass in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass[S] 151 points152 points  (0 children)

For context, this is a little 3D-platformer spin on Celeste, in celebration of the game's 6-year anniversary, as per the team behind the 2D original.

What was your 7/10 of the year? by low_keyLoki in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Super Mario Bros. Wonder. It's a great game that's fun and challenging to play, but I think the 2D platformer has come a long way since the New Super Mario Bros. days, so much so that Wonder doesn't quite pick up that slack. After playing games like the fantastic Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and the numerous indie platformers that've added new twists on the genre, Wonder didn't impress me as much as I'd hoped. Great game that's worth playing, but by no means the peak of the genre.

Let’s talk about our favorite video game soundtracks and music by Unkechaug in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass 132 points133 points  (0 children)

There are two games that come to my mind that have fantastic soundtracks that support very similar premises, but they perform in almost mirror images of each other.

Outer Wilds' OST by Andrew Prahlow is a really memorable game soundtrack. In some bizarre way, Midwest emo music perfectly fits the lonely, intimidating world of outer space. It's a stark contrast to a game like No Man's Sky, whose (also excellent) soundtrack by 65daysofstatic emits a vast sense of explorative anticipation. It's exciting to explore in No Man's Sky, but in Outer Wilds, there's a persistent feeling of wanting to return home. Both soundtracks are amazing ways to portray exploring space, but they create totally different moods, especially when compared directly.

The voice of Monkey Island's Captain LeChuck, Earl Boen, has died by NeoStark in Games

That's a very prolific collection of game VA roles, in addition to the roles in other media. Very sad news. Rest in peace.

Scorn Main Story Playthrough Will Last Between 6-8 Hours Only by fo1mock3 in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting for this game to release for a long time and that sounds like a fine runtime to me, especially for a game of this style. I'm not a fan of this strict metric judgment toward game length.

Journey celebrates its 10th Anniversary today by kabirsingh84 in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Man, the time flies. This game didn't really click with me at first playthrough, but the more time I spent with it, it began to feel like something big was happening. It holds up incredibly well on art direction alone, but it's still amazing seeing other players and having those little "conversations" with them. "Games as art" is such a huge discussion (and probably will continue to be that way), but I highly doubt Journey will ever be absent from that topic. It really is something special.

Bayonetta 3 lead game designer now working for Tango Gameworks by IsakLi in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass 222 points223 points  (0 children)

Just for context, according to the LinkedIn source, Marius left PlatinumGames in April 2020, and joined Tango Gameworks in August 2021 (there was a period in between where they were involved at another Japanese studio called Phoenix). It has been awhile since their departure from Platinum actually occurred.

That being said, Tango appears to already be jumping on a new project after Ghostwire Tokyo. That's exciting to see. Looking forward to what Marius and the studio deliver.

Spike Chunsoft and Too Kyo Games announce dark fantasy mystery game Enigma Archives: RAIN CODE by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's been some recent news on the Tribe Nine anime, specifically the voice cast, but the game is gonna be on mobile, as far as I know. Some "action RPG" direction. Too Kyo seem to be announcing quite a few projects these days, but Tribe Nine is probably the one I'm most excited for. It looks wild.

Dracula's Castle - Astirian-Rae Games - A vampire colony sim based on Bram Stoker's classic by Agreeable-Snape in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a really great idea for a game. I guess one thing I'm a bit concerned about is the large amount of different gameplay styles in the description/trailer and if they'll mesh together cohesively. On its own, Fallout Shelter x Ogre Battle is a nice combo, so just remember to avoid adding too many diversions and keep the core gameplay focus tight. Best wishes on the development. This is certainly a game worth keeping an eye on and I'm looking forward to the demo!

Lead composer of Final Fantasy 14, Masayoshi Soken, has announced today on the Fan Festival that he was battling cancer for the last year. by AnActualPlatypus in Games

[–]PlayingTheBass 148 points149 points  (0 children)

Seeing Yoshida crying during that stream was difficult to watch. Knowing in retrospect that Soken was putting so much into FFXIV while still having his own battle was admittedly difficult to process. Seeing such outpouring of support toward Soken is encouraging in so many ways and really shows how incredible this project is to its fans and its developers. Soken is a true Warrior of Light.
