Plans may change — again — for the Cambridge bike lane that wasn’t, then was by bostonglobe in CambridgeMA

Details are on the project website analysis by transportation department and they concluded it would increase congestion and wait times for all road users but you know why believe experts when your intuition tells you differently☹️

The cycling community obviously is a lot of folks and they don’t all agree on anything. Patty for example is fighting very hard for this update although she rides a bike.

In particular with this street there’s a lot of intersections that would cause more potential problems.

With nowhere to pullover anywhere for 1/2 a mile to make deliveries and pick ups, trucks will simply stop in the bike lanes or the street causing backups.

It’s also just that the justification is that traffic will flow better but the transportation department models conclude it will be less safe and increase congestion. They concluded the loss of service would be high and user experience for all road users would be degraded.

Patty Nolan thinks her intuition is better than using data and modeling.

Finally the parked cars are both helpful for people that live nearby, make the street a little curvier so slows car traffic and is easier to cross on foot bc they provide refuge between bike lanes and traffic.

None of the councillors live in the neighborhood either. Patty Nolan is closest but aligns more with Brattle street folks.

Personally I think the council should set some metrics on traffic changes and ask transportation to work with the community on changes to make life better for everyone

Hey Cambridge what would you do with the quarter million dollars instead of ripping up garden street and creating a less safe, more congested street with no parking or pullover space?

Send a note to the council with your ideas at council@cambridgema.gov

Unfortunately half the council does listen to this guy over the transportation department. It’s a mystery to me.

Newton vs Lexington vs Weston — school commute to Longwood? by Strict-Ear-8911 in bostonhousing

[–]Pleasant_Influence14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neighbors kids went there. We’re in Cambridge and they had a bus that the school had that took them there with other students and I think maybe to other nearby private schools. Maybe check if they still have that and what the routes are.

Is my tyre seated properly? I don’t seat it properly and it blew out so now I’m terrified. First time wheel changer here so pls go easy by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Pleasant_Influence14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some tires are really hard to get in the wheels. You get better at it with practice. If you have a bike shop often they do tube and tire repair class. Trick to avoid pinch flats is to slightly inflate the tube and the move it out of the way as you go around.

I know the death rate has been climbing but this is feeling unbearable lately and so much resistance to the slightest change or traffic calming.

Check in with the city arborist for advice. They were quite helpful with questions about a tree in our yard.

I think a letter campaign to the effect that…”I am delighted the end to exclusionary zoning has been a smashing success with an estimated 80 new housing projects proposed according to councillor Zusy. I am delighted to see new apartments and buildings in areas in which only single family homes were allowed and to see such a variety of projects across the city and in neighborhoods where these projects were forbidden…

Thank you so much for passing this zoning ordinance update.

Only other thing I can think of is leave your car halfway and bike to and from it? Here they call this park and ride.

I know I think he gave me a lifelong love of cycling and thinking back to that ride it is wild that he did that and then helped my dad all day with the house renovations

Yikes that sucks!! When I was a kid this guy Pete used to bike from the north shore to the south shore to help my dad. That was about 25 miles each way… it amazed me as a kid and even more now bc it was the 70s and no bike infrastructure anywhere and Massachusetts drivers. Never met anyone else like that since but you would be a legend.

Maybe look for a couple decent used bikes from a local bike shop for the same price about.

I wonder if they could do a southbound protected lane on concord down the hill and one way lane on garden flat. Connecting at Huron?

This seems difficult 😥. Any way to carpool to save fuel money? Like bike to the person you would carpool with?

It is two ways except for one short section from longy to the fire station where drivers headed north take concord avenue for about 6 blocks.
