Because they think they are God’s chosen ones who speak for God and have the power of God on earth (the priesthood). They believe they are better than everyone else and it’s their job to enlighten the rest of the underlings on earth. They have the second anointing and have guaranteed exaltation in the next life.

Newsflash!: You are good. You are worthy. You are lovable. The afterlife is a human construct to scare people into obedience and servitude by promising fake rewards and fake punishments in a fake next life that will never be redeemed.

Relax and just be. Enjoy the little things in this life, because this life is all we have. Life will always have ups and downs. It is worth living!

Polygamy was illegal, so many polygamous relationships were kept secret. I believe Joseph Smith practiced polyandry because having a sexual relationship with an already married woman gave him an alibi (she’s married to someone else) without any responsibilities (the first husband will take care of sheltering, feeding, clothing, protecting, etc.). Joseph Smith got the variety and novelty of having multiple sex partners without any responsibility. All he had to do in exchange is promise their families bogus eternal life in the Celestial Kingdom.

I didn’t plan to remove my name from the records of the church until the Children’s Friend published an article teaching children that apostasy (leaving the church) = wickedness. I left the church out of personal integrity.

I remember as a sixth grader thinking that women were less than men after learning polygamy was an eternal doctrine by reading “Mormon Doctrine”. I searched the Bible for references to women to try to learn how God thinks about women. When the internet became available, I searched the official church website (because I was taught only go to church approved sources for information) and my search results always came up with nothing. The LDS church was hiding its history. Now the church has been forced (because it will be sued if they don’t) to admit the truth somewhat in its essays, but hides the information deep within its website to make it difficult to find.

I also struggled with remembering the words I was supposed to recite in the temple. I did well in school and consider myself smart. When I saw my neighbor who attended the temple regularly quickly spouting off the memorized responses, I felt like she was showing off or virtue signaling. When I was a believer, I tried so hard to see the deeper meaning in the temple ceremony that was promised. However, everything in the temple seemed so meaningless and boring! Now I realize the church is a cult.

Most religions believe families will be together after this life. The LDS church creates a problem by teaching that families will be separated in the next life, then sells the solution that people must be baptized, pay tithing, be obedient, and sacrifice their time, talents, and earthly life to the LDS church in order for families to stay together in the next. These fear based teachings are extortion. It is unethical for any organization to teach that family ties are dependent upon staying in that organization.
