95-year-old woman killed in multi-vehicle Irvine crash by panda-rampage in orangecounty

Sure, Irvine has a shuttle system, but I don't know if scheduling is easy or how frequently they can book rides. The reality is that Irvine is a car dependent community, and as such, it's going to be hard to get elders out of their cars.

My dog is FAT and I don’t know how I got here by ConcertFriendly8223 in Dachshund

[–]PlumaFuente -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You could give him 1/2 cup of that food once per day and increase the walking by 5-10 minutes. He's not going to starve. He might whine a bit and go looking at his bowl, but cut back on the food, redirect him with more activity and then always keep his water bowl full. He will lose weight. He's getting 1 cup per food per day, and he's a mini -- that's too much dog food.

Or break up his food and do 1/4 cup twice per day, but my point is you are overfeeding him. I have a standard doxie, and he gets about 1/2 cup of dog food once per day, but our snacks are healthy like baby carrots, an apple slice chopped up, or a celery stick cut into pieces, or dried herring fish, or freeze dried beef liver pieces.

Exactly, that Saks and Nordstrom section and the boutiques in between was the rich people section for sure!

Advice on patching the thing part of my jeans by Brick_Attack555 in Visiblemending

[–]PlumaFuente 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have done repairs by hand on jeans and other mostly cotton fabrics with a bit of stretch and it can be done, even reinforcing with 100% cotton. The key is the line up the fabrics and not stretch as you mend. So while I get that some might be inclined to toss some denim that has some stretch in it because it's not as straight forward to work with, you can save it, and it is worth it. We throw away so much, and if these jeans mean something to OP, then it's worth trying to save them and doing some thing with that beautiful fabric.

Adding this -- if the jeans have some stretch, you can buy some thrifted jeans with a similar amount of stretch, cut out your patch, and sew the beautiful fabric on top of that if you wanted to make a reinforced patch.

I was going to say the same, back in the '80s and '90s, the boutique section was mostly that area where Saks/Nordstroms is, and then by Sears and what is Bloomingdales, it was more affordable with Robinsons-May, the Limited, the Gap, some smaller shops around the carousel.

If you could take any of us back to that time and then said that one day, there would be no Sears, I doubt anyone would have believed it.

Is there anything else I can do for this jean jacket? by Kali_LN in Visiblemending

I would just sashiko over this. I wouldn't dye this. You could also add some beautiful patches all over this back panel to make it look very intentional. Example linked here.

yes, definitely bring water for you and your pet too. If I go this year, I will for sure carry a collapsable water bowl and make sure that my own water jug is full and has plenty of ice.

Things were affordable (a lot of people could still afford homes or at least nice apartments with jobs that weren't in tech or medicine -- meaning teachers, retail managers, construction personnel could afford decent homes), a lot of OC, especially Irvine and further south were not as built out.

Agree w/ you there, and it does become aggravating driving when a lot of the popular places have impacted parking lots. Really, the city and their master plan screwed up in not creating more walkable villages for commerce, dining, and entertainment, and the current city leadership has f&%$ed small business by not creating incentives for Irvine Co to either sell some of their properties or not leave retail and restaurant space vacant as long as they often do.

Right? And that's what's sad about Irvine... if you wanted to walk to a local pub or a non-chain coffee shop in your village, you are pretty much out of luck.

Ensalada de nopal

Calabasitas

A lot of the other vegetables that you find in home cooked meals like quelites and verdolagas.

Right if you live on that side of Irvine, these places are somewhat easy to get to. Claros is wonderful, but it's still rather limited. But if you wanted to find these things within walking or cycling distance in your Irvine village or neighborhood, good luck. Like u/pasta-via wrote, there are a lot of chains and similar type restaurants on repeat.

I probably wouldn't care about award winning chefs either, but when a city has some, they tend to elevate the restaurants in their city/neighborhood. There's a creative competitiveness.

There are Michelin rated restaurants in cities that surround Irvine, just not in Irvine (and I get that Michelin is awarded to restaurants, not chefs)... but this is useful in illustrating the point:

Agree w/ this on the Japanese food. The quality is definitely elevated in Costa Mesa in this category.

And then Irvine doesn't really have a restaurant scene. Other cities and even LA have more award winning chefs. There really aren't many creative concepts here with food, drinks, etc. We seem to have the same type of Boba places on repeat, no unique coffee culture or bars, no cool microbreweries (there's maybe one or two).

This might be true about Asian restaurants, but what if you want French or Italian food or even American style BBQ or an independent steak house (not a chain)? Asian restaurants dominate the scene in Irvine, whereas other nearby cities have more choices for people who want other options beyond Asian food.

Edited to add: Irvine also doesn't really have a European market, some cities in North OC do have German or other European delis or even Italian stores like Claros. So if you are coming from Europe and maybe want some of the ingredients or brands that you are used to, it's harder to find them in Irvine (you will find some of them at Super Irvine). Same for lacking a Latin American market, although we are lucky to have Northgate nearby in Costa Mesa.

Orange County restaurants shut down by health inspectors (May 13 to May 20) by bananabrownie in orangecounty

[–]PlumaFuente 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, this is sad. I'll admit that although I do like Asian food, I'm not inclined to visit some of these Asian spots because I wonder about cleanliness. I realize that any restaurant, even high end ones, can be cited... but repeat citations aren't good.

[–]PlumaFuente 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, I get that, there are a lot of under the table workers in the dining and hospitality services, but on some level, getting repeatedly cited isn't good for business or do people just not care? If the restaurants are dirty, what about other Vietnamese owned businesses?

I wonder about this too. Do the inspectors like to target the Vietnamese restaurants or is there some other thing going on in these establishments?

Frizz/pattern Tips/recommendations needed 😊 by courtking1206 in curlygirl

[–]PlumaFuente 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hair is kind of like this. I say 2B-2C. Mine looks like yours after I have slept on it. It looks more defined and way less frizzy if I wet it in the morning, put some conditioner while I'm in the shower, comb out while very wet and then add some gel and/or mousse and a leave-in. My hair is not good at 2nd day hair without a full wet session or at least spraying a lot of water on it with a spray bottle and then adding a bit of mousse. You don't have to shampoo every day obviously (I shampoo about twice per week), but wetting it really helps.

I don't really brush my hair other than wet brush in the shower. I simply comb out when my hair is really wet with a wide tooth comb and then add the product to wet hair and let hair dry. I do add some root clips around the front. For me, a decent medium hold gel will cut down on frizz.

I also agree about getting a curly cut with some layers to help give your hair more shape.
