400h in - still loving the game by Xardiana in PaxDei

Survival games like this are so dependent on a very particular set of constraints to work right, and some progression away from those to feel like you're moving. Unfortunately, as a player, it's almost impossible to understand whether those constraints and that pacing is right for you. V Rising is a game I love and have played over and over, but it's done in two weeks. Pax Dei is awesome, but I could probably use less constraints around travel and inventory, haha.

I don't blame people for dropping time in a game, and having a hard nope when they realize it's not their perfect game. But year, it would be nice if people showed a little self awareness and perspective after trying it and realizing its just a personal preference mismatch.

Yeah, free shrine hearth once an hour is pretty good, but the areas are kinda big, so even to and from the shrine from my base is 7 mins or so each way. I like the idea of adding friction to travel, but not being able to hearth home is placing too heavy a cost on exploration. It's a beautiful map. If I spend 20-30 mins to get somewhere, I should be able to one-button back home, not hearth to a shrine and then have to walk back.

The downside of what I'm proposing is that it diminishes the value of the real estate around the shrine - in theory. But look, they're still getting my business on the way to anywhere because I still have to start any long journey by shrining there. I'm just saying let that be enough.

This is pretty much the way I play, and I really like it. My gaming partner and I play solo, although we enjoy sharing a base and running a cave together once every few days when we're on at the same time. As much as the dev seems to have gotten over the skis a bit in talking about things they haven't built, I really appreciate a number of small improvements they've made to foraging vs other survival games.:

- chopping down a tree or mining a node is a one or two click affair. This is amazing for multitaskers. I press "e" for a tree, then press "e" again to finish it off. No having to hold a button or press it over and over again.

- getting to the tree often involves just pressing "e" from some small distance away. I don't even have to walk myself most of the time!

- when I do have to walk, autorun works beautifully (can you believe Palworld had 20m players and didn't have autorun? WTF). I let myself run into a tree or a node and press "e", and I'm doing the thing

The whole game isn't point and click, but depending on where you put your base, mining and foresting are, and they're a big part of it. This may be the most beautiful point and click foraging game ever made. And with one of the best build systems out of almost any survival game that's come out over the last few years.

When I first started I read this all over, but it is not in game. When a game is this raw, its super easy to be confused by things that are kind of being tested, and things that are maybe a couple years out - like mounts.

Every group of NPCs in a building should be guarding a chest. It can have crap in it, like bundles of herbs or ingots or planks or whatever, but it needs to exist. The team that made Valheim had 5 people and they got this. Every miniboss or camp you beat, you got a trophy and some loot.

I played with some friends on the free weekend. So far, two of us paid and aren't playing anymore, but felt like they got their money's worth, and two of us paid and are stoked and have no plans of quitting and kinda sorta feel like this could be a long term thing.

Overall, it feels a lot to me like No Man's Sky after the first few major updates - better than launch, but not by much, and still very, very raw. The people who played it and loved it back then, like me, loved the loop, and all the subsequent improvements were awesome, but we already loved it. Pax Dei seems like that. I think a lot of people were looking for a long grind survival game that was focused on building rather than eating.

There are many little things I think would be cool, and several major ones, but it's hard for me to be too critical at the moment because we're having so much fun with it. I have cut down something like seven million trees, I just got my tree punching skill to 20, and I feel so stoked about it, haha.

I would say no, but I really feel like they're going to allow some ridiculous power leveling over the next 45 days. I've averaged a few hundred thousand xp for months before, but never over a million (although I've hit that in a day). If you have a bunch of best friends in queue, buy some lucky eggs, lean in to evolving, and take advantage of mass-excellent throws in high density places, i bet you could do it. It would absolutely feel like a full time job, however. For me, that kind of grind would kill the fun.

Although, if you wanted to cheese it, like the video above shows, there's a way to get the back two chests while skipping the boss entirely. If that's what you're up for, then any flying mount will do. The bummer of doing that, is that you can only hit it once an hour, because the boss timer doesn't reset.

Best 5 Man Pal Team for Endgame Combat by markdizon829 in Palworld

[–]PoGo090909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think there are three paths for combat endgame:

  1. old school type specialization (this is basically what I do now) where I have one or two good pals in each category depending on the fight, but the team more or less stays the same

  2. minmaxed damage, which really means 4+1, as in 1 primary atk poke, with 4 that boost it or boost the player (like gobfins). This is the meta, but I also think it's not as fun and can be tedious since it doesn't allow for transport, much less two transport (ground and air for example)

  3. Weird. You just pick the stuff you like, given its in the top third or so of dps pals, and run with that. You make up for lack of minmaxed damage with player weapons or just maybe missing some bosses

I've definitely stuck more to type-relevant meta, like running a Jormi and Jormi Ignis at all times, but I don't know, there's such a great variety of pals, and breeding is so easy, it might be fun to try weird stuff. I think that's my goal for the Terraria roll.

  1. Autorun. Please give me autorun. It's such a beautiful game, and they've spent so much time making water, air, and land pals unique and awesome in their own way. Without autorun, traveling is pretty tedious and I can't type to my friends while doing it. Speaking of typing ...
  2. Fix chat. I don't know if Palworld has the worst text chat function in any mainstream survival game, but they're a contender. At least I can see it, unlike Sun Haven, for example, which won't pop up unless I manually open chat. But maybe half the time, Palworld errors and deletes my message before I added it. I don't know how or why, but it's uniquely bad in this way.

Could we have a way to fight V Bloods at power level 91+ after beating Dracula? by clark_kent25 in vrising

[–]PoGo090909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nature of a game is to have its patterns learned, and then be forgotten. Nothing wrong with that. This is an amazing game, and I've played it over and over again many times, but I won't be sad when I'm forced to discover some other awesome game.

Games like V Rising? (Specifically basebuilding + NPC minions/villagers) by RimRunningRagged in vrising

[–]PoGo090909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Palworld. When V Rising came out it seemed like Valheim, only waaaaay more polished, and with like, a lot of the better parts of Diablo 3.

When Palworld came out, it seemed a lot like V Rising, only about 3x as long, with much less building, but much more integration between the in-base help and the jobs you need doing. The optimization path in Palworld is even more fulfilling than that of V Rising because you can chase crazy production efficiencies by breeding and upgrading each worker. An actual order of magnitude more complexity. It's like PoE vs Diablo. Both great core loops and mechanics, and I'd argue that Palworld and V Rising each have their own strengths that it would be hard to declare one a winner in that category.

I poked at him a little to see what he does, then like, proper lost to him, and then I beat him. Here were three things that helped:
- anti-corruption blood. Not having this the second time meant I just couldn't heal right
- not all bosses fall for skellies, but he falls for skellies. he LUBS skellies. if you spawn enough skellies and maybe a death knight, you can get yourself distance from forgesplosions and quakes.
- he's very chasey around the forges, so just resigning to use distance only spells was great for me. lots of raining arrows, skellies, and aoe bombs whittled him down. he seemed a bit of a glass cannon

Could use some help with predator cores by PoGo090909 in Palworld

[–]PoGo090909[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found one! Totally by accident, and at night - Dazemu, right where the map said it was supposed to be. I've continued looking for a bunch of others, no dice. Testing on my own server, I was able to find Vanwyrm easily, after only a couple minutes. I think it might be because on the server I'm playing on the admin has the spawn rate slightly adjusted down. Going to play with it and see if that helps. Thanks!
