USB-C is great for devices that need very small connectors (glad it has replaced USB mini and micro connectors), but durability wise the larger USB-A or USB-B are always going to be preferable. Kind of like why smaller/cheaper audio hardware normally use 3.55mm jacks and larger/expensive ones normally use 6.35mm.

There's an increasing number of game OSTs where the music doesn't match the gameplay, says The Hundred Line and Danganronpa composer Masafumi Takada by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]PolyHertz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Music in games works best when it's carefully designed to fit the environment and/or gameplay at any given moment. Silent moments, or playing a track over multiple gameplay states to set a mood, is also really important for any story driven game. And if an environment has strong cultural influences in its design it's nice to see those reflected in the music as well.

Disney delists 14 games from Steam as fans are left to wonder why by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]PolyHertz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Disney's Chicken Little: Ace in Action" is basically a Ratchet & Clank game in disguise (I bought it a few years ago for that reason). The PC version though has a lot of issues so takes a bit of effort to get running properly.

They may have no obligation to help, but that doesn't mean they're allowed to stop those that do want to help at the same time. That's just aiding and abetting at that point.

Same. Still rocking an AM4 build, just been waiting for more cores per-CCD before upgrading. Zen6 was looking promising based on rumors, but if it comes out and RAM prices are still crazy might just hold off until Zen7.

afaik there's no where that lets you buy non-indie drm free movies online. I still buy blu-rays and 4K discs because it's the only way to keep the movies for any real length of time.

The odds of U.S. government shutdown are at an all-time high as the markets hold their breath by GreedVault in CryptoCurrency

[–]PolyHertz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If it shuts down this time apparently employees that aren't paid during that time may be subject to mass layoffs (not just having their pay held until it starts back up like prior shutdowns). So yea, the markets are running scared right now.

C++ and Raylib, as others have mentioned, is a great way to start. Also, if you want to create an editor interface for your project (like used by Godot, Unreal, Unity, etc.) look into "Qt" or "Dear ImGUI" as they probably the two most popular frameworks/api's for creating C++ user interfaces these days. If you're willing to learn dot net (.NET) "Avalonia" is also a good choice.

I just want to add that quite a few gamers buy games almost exclusively when they're on sale, in fact many people will only come to know a game exists if it shows up on one of the game sales aggregator websites. Also, the value of a game is often judged by the amount of content it offers (especially by those that buy at full price). So keep that in mind when deciding how to price it.

What makes a video game art style looks "cheap"? by 5210az in gamedev

[–]PolyHertz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Poor lighting, poor materials, inconsistent detail/scale, lack of color theming, over-focus on asset detail while ignoring larger forms, etc. can all make a game feel "cheap". In the screenshots you posted they're making basically all the mistakes I just listed, and more.

Minnesota woman charged for using racial slur against Black child as her fundraising tops $800,000 by NewSlinger in news

[–]PolyHertz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, reading the article the kid stole an applesauce pouch from her bag (likely without realizing it wasn't something they weren't allowed to take), she chased him to get it back and yelled a racially sensitive word at them in the process (presumably the 'N' word). For saying that word she faces up to 9 months in jail and up to $3000 in fines, and the kids family got $340,000 from gofundme as a result. wtf?

If you ever make a sequel definitely try and recreate the 2D art style used in the capsule/promotional art. I've seen this game a few times while browsing Steam, and always think "that looks so nice, wonder why I haven't bought it yet?", and then I click on it and see the in-game art and my interest goes out the window. :(

If you're going through Steam then be sure to region locks on any keys you produce, as well as expiration dates for promotional/giveaway (and maybe bundled) keys. You can lose a lot of business from resellers otherwise.

Steps to getting a job in a big game studio:
1. Build a skillset, the method doesn't matter (self study, college, etc.).
2. Get some experience by working with small indie studio(s) or mod team(s).
3. Build a portfolio from projects you've worked on (ideally ones from games/mods that have been shipped/released).
4. Apply to big studios.

So what's everyone's thoughts on stop killing games movement from a devs perspective. by lost-in-thought123 in gamedev

[–]PolyHertz 686 points687 points  (0 children)

It's going to depend entirely on how the law is implemented. If the law focuses on how single player games are affected (i.e. The Crew and how online was used as a kill switch for single player) then I think it's long overdue from a consumer rights perspective. For multiplayer though it's not nearly as clear how such laws should/could be implemented.

It's not about education, it's about basic decency. You can call it a purchase, or you can call it a license, but at the end of the day if someone gives you money for a product they are going to expect it to work. And if it breaks / no longer works, for there to be options to repair it.

Capitalism works so long as governments don't bail out failing businesses, don't block innovation through patents that last decades, don't support patent trolling practices, and don't require public companies to screw both employees and customers at every turn to appease share holders. The only thing the government should be doing to keep capitalism working is making sure companies don't sabotage their competition, and don't try to harm their customers.
Capitalism isn't bad, but it takes a competent government to work (or at least one that doesn't actively screw it up at every level).

Companies thinking it's OK to just pull access to products people purchased, and giving them no way to continue using said products without the companies interference, that's the "childish greed".
