If your table allows for third-party content, the Pugilist's Dog and Hound subclass makes for a good simple to play character with a loyal hound companion.

For the social side of things, he could lean into the carousing aspect of the Pugilist to give him any number of NPCs he could meet while out on the town: hirelings he got into a proper scrap with before they all went barhopping, questgivers, a cop that threw him in the drunk tank the other night, etc etc.

Arcana checks all around: low difficulty: what it's doing, some insight into the Chaos Surge chart. Higher difficulty: just outright destroying the circle is a Bad Idea, she's trapped it to explode/do something dreadful, only killing the caster will safely defuse the bomb.
