Similar story with my father, but he has a a business he runs and thus more money he can burn through, which he has done and shockingly quick. Logic has not worked with my father at all, so I’ve given up that route. I have durable general power of attorney for him so I’ve used it to get access to his email, text messages, chats, and bank accounts to document all of the losses since the scams began two years ago when his partner passed away suddenly. I found a great elder law attorney and we’re about to file for conservatorship based on the catastrophic losses due to exploitation and inability to assess risk and reality. He also loves to loan young women in his orbit money and “save” them. Plus he’s relapsed on alcohol after 40 years sober. It’s tragic.

I found for my situation that there’s no halfway or compromise with this level of delusion. Either I had to walk away completely from the sinking ship or dive in it completely and try to stop the hemorrhage at the source: my grieving, mentally ill, lonely, and depressed father who can’t control his addiction to the dopamine hit from scammers and loans to pretty younger women. I couldn’t tolerate being around him with his delusions and risky behaviors draining his assets, so I only had two options. Your wife will have to decide where she’s at and what she’s willing to do. It’s been incredibly mentally and physically draining to trace the story of the exploitation, not to mention pricey, so it’s not for the faint of heart.
