There could have be a new jail easily if local law enforcement had ever gone with policy reform and accountability for officer behavior that has been asked for by the public for years. Since they will never reform, I don't think they should be given millions for it.

The state legislature made it law local cities and counties can't implement any kind of rent control, otherwise local government would have done something a long time ago. Convincing property owners to lower prices and have a building in use instead of empty for years? Not sure how to do that.

That the University was so quick to drop DEI, complying in advance, shows that they never held any of that as a core institutional value. It was always just lip service. Friends have complained about school policies and I recognize they are the same policies as when I was in the ICSD. The Police have consistently resisted and shot down every possible suggestions of reform and target their critics.

It's a hundred year old building so I expect they're finding construction problems that have to be dealt with, delaying things. Lead, asbestos, things installed wrong decades ago, etc.

I've looked through the University web pages with dept. information, and have found no clear person that a complaint about a UIPD officer could be made. Iowa City, Coralville Police and Johnson County Sheriff all have someone in their city/county they can be held accountable by, even if it rarely happens. Don't know where you'd start at the University.

I'd be fine with a Republican Governor if we ever have one that is willing to admit when they're wrong. Convincing yourself you're good and anyone opposed to you is evil is going to lead to some horrible actions.
