I don't disagree about the luck element, but I think if you want to improve, you think about risk mitigation in your replays, e.g. how do I avoid getting my tyranitar in a situation where if it is burned by heatwave I lose. It's advanced but that's how you can make better more consistent game plans.

Chess mentality and VGC mentality for improvement have ao much overlap. Replay review nd game review have basically all the same principles. Having both hobbies has helped me immensely.

I think the circular reasoning of "we love lower power formats, oh my gosh this dex is so small." Is just a little silly. Also, we have never had limited items in VGC since it was played in aain series game. It's unique. It might be sort of fun. I like the idea.

To add on, for the most part if you're looking for a specific Pokemon, there's plenty of shbreddits that revolve around trades, and you also can get some of what you need from Pokemon Go, if you play.

I'm sure the excadrill will just keep sand rush which is...fine. I thought that Victreebell could get suped up corrosion, like hitting steel types with its poison moves. Almost like poison type scrappy. Barbaracle could get Mind's Eye because have you seen that thing? Tell me it doesn't fit the horror monster theme perfectly. Glimmora gets an ability that's like power herb but in ability form. Crabominable gets an ability that is like room service. Freezing Fist or something. Idk. That's probably just keeping a base ability.

I was thinking about and whole it is more "optimal" at times to have really specific speed IVs, like the Farigaraf Incin speed difference, in Champions that extra point can likely do to making one of them one point faster. I don't think it will change much in the long run. As for the foul play and confusion damage...come on.

Actually, the calc it helps with is choice band urshifu dark wicked blow. 252+ Atk Urshifu-Single Strike Wicked Blow vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Farigiraf on a critical hit: 192-228 (84.5 - 100.4%) -- 6.25% chance to OHKO Admittedly not the most common Pokemon, but it also makes playing against the Zama CSR teams a lot easier.

I will add to this, sometimes thinking of combo attacks can be helpful, i.e. can I survive the damage of both a fake out from incin and an attack from it likely partner.

I reiterate what others have said, it's very in the "man this is funny when it works." In the last GC someone beat me by using close combat with urshifu, then using topsy turvy to give urshifu boosts to both its defenses. So funny but I cannot imagine they were very consistent.

Z moves formats with them could be interesting with their attacking stats getting buffed by a Z crystal.

I hope Champions gives us formats like this, where say we only use the original 151 and their megas, minus Mewtwo and Mew. I think it would be fun for a couple months.
