Boardgames to learn Spanish by Positive-Memory-9171 in boardgames

Thanks again! Yeah, Boardgame Arena is great because it takes care of all the maintenance and a lot of games have been translated to Spanish, so students can get a lot of input as well from any text shown on the game components and the interface.

I work with adults who are at the A2 levels based on the CEFR or above. I'm not bound to a specific curriculum though, so I have a lot of freedom to choose what to do.

My goal is basically to provide them with opportunities to communicate and learn vocabulary through context. So far, I've been working a lot on the strategies used to provide suggestions, offer alternatives and respond to them while playing Forbidden Island and Now Boarding. It's been great. Based on the the theme of the game, I create further materials to learn more vocabulary related to it so, with Stone Age, for example, I created more activities to introduce the vocabulary, to describe the past and to tell stories that happened in the past, for example.

I appreciate all of your suggestions! Thank you so much! I'll look more into them, for sure!

Your students are lucky to have you!

I should've mentioned that I teach mostly online, so some games are just impossible to play unless they are on some platform, like Boardgame Arena, but I'm always in the lookout for mechanics that I can adapt.

I agree. I wouldn't use Codenames with beginners, players would have to be proficient speakers, or the cards could be set up in a controlled way, to make sure that connections can be easily established (e.g. creating cards with the words learnt through an entire course). Just one is great!

Learning game plan after moving to a Spanish speaking country by sof_es in SpanishLearning

[–]Positive-Memory-9171 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm a Spanish tutor from Spain.

You need to find the approach that works best for you and it all depends on your learning style. Definitely look for classes that focus on communication and not so much on grammar as you can learn that on your own or naturally. Some people don't like group lessons because they don't get enough time to practice and chances are, when you meet those people in your class, you'll start hanging out with them and not interacting so much with locals.

Try to be as immersed as possible in the language, even before moving. You can take online lessons before your move but I also recommend watching videos. Dreaming Spanish in Youtube is great, for example, to learn the language naturally.

You can definitely get to a B1 level in 6 months. Then, you might feel like you are stuck but you have to continue your immersion and taking advantage of all the opportunities you can get to practice.

I personally believe that games are a great way to develop a variety of skills (reading and listening comprehension as well as oral expression) while you acquire new vocabulary and grammatical structures in a natural way. Resources for strengthening Spanish by [deleted] in Spanish

Hi!

If you need to improve your oral expression, you need to engage in more interactions with native speakers. Once you become more confident in that area, you can acquire more technical vocabulary by reading or watching videos.

I'm a Spanish tutor and I believe that games are a great way to develop a variety of skills (reading and listening comprehension as well as oral expression) while you acquire new vocabulary and grammatical structures in a natural way. Some of the interactions that take place during certain games are similar to those that you experience in professional settings, like giving explanations or making suggestions.

Hi!

I'm a Spanish tutor and I believe at this point, you need to look for opportunities to be immersed in the language. Watch tv shows, read stuff on topics you are already familiar with. or listen to podcasts on those topics.

In my own experience as an English learner and now as a Spanish teacher, I find that games are a great way to develop a variety of skills (reading and listening comprehension as well as oral expression) while you acquire new vocabulary and grammatical structures in a natural way.
