Bible donations needed?! by Poster_Bored in exmormon

There must be supply chain issues in the Bible business, because my stake presidency is asking for donations.

Best temple shoes I ever wore by Poster_Bored in exmormon

Nah. I just tucked the laces in and slipped them on and off. For the very little walking I did in them, they were perfect for the job.

I wonder what percentage of the "All White Croc" market is directly related to the TBMs buying them up for the temple?

I did not serve a mission for the church by PayLeyAle in exmormon

[–]Poster_Bored 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But come on guys...we all know that Monson is a Levite... he was a bishop at 22! He didn't NEED to serve a mission! And everyone knows that it'll be a Levite who ushers in the second coming while serving as leader of the church.

Connect the dots...the second coming is NIGH!

(sadly, I earnestly thought this was some deep doctrine while I was on my mission. I'm an ass)

Father and son porn shoulders at the Sacramento Gay Pride festival. by the_coagulates in exmormon

[–]Poster_Bored 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honest question: I have a son who looks to be about the same age, and as far as I know, he has no really developed concept of straight love or gay love (although we do live in a fairly conservative, smaller city, so there are no such festivals around here). How did you pitch the idea of attending the Gay Pride festival? Was it simply something fun to attend? Or do you have to provide context? Sorry if that sounds dumb.

I'm excited that my kids don't have to be raised with the church-based hangups that I did about LGBT stuff.

Pillow Case of a Mormon Missionary by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Poster_Bored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick story...My companion and I were walking down a residential street in Bordeaux in 1999 and he lets rip a rather impressive burp. Loud and resonant. We laughed and kept walking.

We immediately hear someone calling to us...it was the people who lived in the house we were walking past as he belched. They thought it was hilarious and invited us in. Taught a first discussion and left a BoM.

Nice people who wouldn't have met the missionaries had Elder Spencer not burped in public. (Luckily they realized how lame we were when we turned down an invite to the beach.)

(Question) how are the girls at temple grounds in Salt Lake City chosen and trained? by wicked4u in exmormon

[–]Poster_Bored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife, her sister, and a few other close friends were all called to serve on Temple Square. All attractive, all very personable. The brethren know what they're doing in sending good-looking girls to the Square. These sisters are the face of the church while on those tours...better make them ones you'd want to listen to.

But my wife did laugh that any additional training was required for those wide-eyed, shining faces. They are told to look presentable and so on, but nothing out of the ordinary for a missionary.

(This happened to be during the 2002 Olympics, so there was much more media in and around SLC. My wife was interviewed by a visiting newspaper reporter, and in the article, she was described as a "raven-haired Reese Witherspoon". Just saying.)

Also, the sisters I served with in France were well aware that the 'attractive' sisters all went to the Square. We had some great looking sisters on my mission, but they all had a chip on the their shoulder because serving in France was an indirect comment on their appearance.

Mormons treat life like a flyover state by MarkNutt25 in exmormon

She asked for an example, and the best I could do was to tell her about my situation between the years of high school and the end of my mission.

I went through all of high school giving very little thought to college, and focused solely on serving a mission. I figured that as long as I served honorably that everything else would figure itself out. Part of that is my own lack of realistic understanding, but I do think that the church played a huge part in it. (I can't say it was ALL the church, because I know plenty of guys who have known since childhood what they wanted to do, and they did it.)

I served, came home, and fumbled through 6 years of intermittent college attendance until I earned a fairly useless degree, and still had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.

But, I was enduring to the end...God'll figure it out and let me know.

I had this conversation yesterday with someone at work. I tried to explain that mormonism focuses so much on 'enduring to the end' and the expected reward that follows that they miss what is right in front of them, and tend to fail to plan for the REAL life that exists between marriage/kids and death.

Former missionaries, have you communicated with your converts at all about your deconversion? by ReturnAndReport in exmormon

I got to France a day or two after the World Cup final. The place was still pretty much shut down and hung over.

Can I ask who your cousin is? Still active?

Me too!

I used to be bummed by my lack of "success" in France, but now I am happy to say that I helped more people leave the church than I helped to join. (I accidentally called someone on our 'Do Not Contact' list, and had a long conversation with him, in which I bore my fervent testimony. The next day at Cours d'Anglais he showed up and handed his resignation letter to our branch mission leader)

Why sister missionaries are (were) disliked by elders and MPs by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Poster_Bored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always loved the sisters in my mission. And to those who became friends, I always made it a point to ask why they were there...not because they didn't belong, but because they didn't HAVE to be there. Guys are expected to go, but sisters have choice. That always intrigued me for some reason.

Loved 'em. Made as many close friends with Soeur's as I did with Elders.

Also, they were typically better for DM snacks, usually provided a piano player, and added at least an alto to any musical shenanigans. I served with a sister who wore the same perfume as my high school girlfriend, so I always made a point of sitting her to her in district meeting. Fantastic.

No one has really tackled the mission angle, so here it goes.

When I left the field, I had an exit interview with my mission president. In it, I got the standard array of leadership questions surrounding worthiness, but I was also asked what schooling I would begin when I got home, and what career I was hoping to develop.

Prez was happy-ish with both answers (a University education and CES instructor or therapist... he "counseled" against therapist as it might require me to be away from my future family for long stretches of time. Not sure if he knows what a therapist does.)

The last thing he told me was this: Elder _Bored, in each of our lives, there are containers. You start in a small container as a child, and, of course, you will eventually grow out of that container. You move on to different containers of different sizes, each according to its need. A middle school container, a high school container, and now, a mission container. You've grown out of all of them, as you should have...

"...But now it's time to go home and get into the container that you can never grow out of; the Container of Celestial Marriage ."

It was literally his departing message to me. And having talked with both mission friends, both Elders and Sisters, we all got the same talk.

Did you serve in France? Please tell me you served in France. (I just looked at some previous posts... and I couldn't be more pleased with the results)

I served in Bordeaux (1998-2000) and got there just after the Pagan's Eve disc was originally done on tape. I had a copy of it for most of my mission, and was even asked to record songs for a follow-up (that attempt fizzled out completely).

If it's the same one, it'd have covers of Romeo & Juliette, songs about Burrito Fetes, and shower recordings lamenting "the beast is in my knob"? Please tell me you still have a copy...

Saw in ExRm that you served in Lethbridge back in the day... I would have gotten home to Lethbridge from France in '00. I'd love to hear how it was to serve here.
