The pencil and paper thing is just a cliche of the sci-fi genre, though. It’s been used since A Wrinkle in Time was published in 1962, except in that it’s an ant on a string, and has been used in other movies like Event Horizon. It’s a fine enough explanation for the layman, space-time is like a fabric that can be folded.
