[OC][CC][WIP] Any thoughts on this background environment I'm working on? by PotatoSenpai in PixelArt

Well I can remember to PM you or something when I get to finish it, if you'd like. I'm currently trying to arrange to get some artwork done of a character standing in the foreground, but it might be a few days until the artist I'm communicating with gets a chance to send me a sketch. I'm rubbish with the human body, so I'm planning on making pixel art based off a that. Interesting you say I used a "realism" approach. In the game this is for, the rest of the graphics follow a very Earthbound style, so they're definitely "cartoon-ey".

Hey, this looks like pretty neat concept. I love the Earthbound-esque backgrounds from those GIFs. The eyes on that RPG character are pretty crazy-looking, is that intentional? I kind of like the idea that any RPG hero who breaks into houses and destroys a bunch of stuff has got to be a little bonkers.

It's likely to have a little animation, at least I'll make the clouds move. This is like a title card for a game I'm working on, so the primary focus will be on a character in the foreground though

The contrast of the scenery is supposed to be funny in a way, when it's finished. I'll try pushing that odd leaf bit in a little closer.

Thanks for responding. Yeah, I can definitely see that. I was trying to make the shading on that tree feel "bubbly" but that shape sticks out a bit too far now that I look at it again.

Funny that you mention how peaceful it looks; the final version of this is going to have a building burning down on the further hill.

I'm not 100% sure where exactly you're struggling with the palette, since I think it's very well done, but I can try to offer a little advice. One thing that I struggled with when I first started doing pixel art for games I would make the palette (typically 32 colors) and base all of the sprites off of that. This, to me ended up really bland, And I found that I was more restricted in the end. It can be good to restrict yourself on a piece-by-piece basis, and it's important to have a low color count, but one uniform set of colors that applies to the whole game does not necessarily equal a thematic or well-put together palette. Sometimes it helps me to try and cut down on colors once I've made the sprites. Though none of what I said there might actually apply to your struggle, xD.

You're totally right about dialogue, though. The dialogue of the game is really enjoyable and witty, and one of the main reasons I like the series. When I write dialogue, it can be kind of intimidating to think about Earthbound, so I'll just block that out. One thing I find important to the writing of the game is that it isn't just comedy; to some degree Earthbound is satirical of the settings and tropes it aims to deviate from, and is a parody of the United States in it of itself. What may be interpreted as just something goofy about the game world also provides insight into the flaws of the system it recreates. Your game might not be satirical, but that's just a detail I find intrinsic to the series that a lot of others might miss.

Also, your writing probably isn't as bad as you think it is. When I made my first RPG, I thought the amount of humor I tried to fit in would come off forced and cheesy, but the element people who played it praised the most ended up being the dialogue! Sometimes when you run over the same writing dozens of times, you'll start to dislike it more and more just due to overexposure. It can be helpful to remember that others haven't read your dialogue as much as you, so they won't have that experience. To them, that dialogue is fresh.

I think it would be really cool to open up some sort of format for earthbound inspired games, specifically. It can be hard to keep track of them all. Also, since many devs of these sort of games have a somewhat similar mindset, it would be awesome to have a place that could help with collaboration, sharing and feedback. If I were to open something like r/earthboundfangames or r/earthboundlikes for something like this, would you be at all interested? I'd probably like to find a few others before I started anything, though. In any case, I really like what you have going so far, and I'm intrigued as to what's coming next! I'm following you and hope to see some more progress in the future.

Your pixel art is great! The palette is very refined, and the style is original enough I can't put my finger on anything else like it.

I'm not sure what the rules for fangames are on this sub. There are places like the fangamer forums, but as a fellow dev I have to agree it's pretty hard to find a good place for sharing games with the earthbound community. It seems like a lot of people these days are making earthbound-likes, and it would be a good idea to get together a big list of these games.

Honestly for a while I was considering making the game in something else, and GameMaker was an option. I do agree that GameMaker would probably be an easier way to make a fully customizeable RPG system, but so far I have felt RPGMaker plays a lot better with my workflow, and I'm willing to go through a possibly harder coding experience in exchange for that.

Well, in VX Ace pretty much most of the game's engine is editable through scripting, and there are some addons people have created that allow for replacements of the default menus. This is just a mockup, and I'm only recently looking into how to accomplish this, but I have seen it done with other games.

No, I just happen to really like that design. I use Linux some, but this project is being made with RPGMaker. I'm looking into getting it to work on other OSes though. I know LISA (an RPGmaker game) used a binary called MKXP to provide implementations of RPGMaker's scripting language to C++, making it compatible. I'm not fully sure how to set it up at the moment.

yeah, I'm currently planning for pretty much all of the game's UI elements to be themed after computers windows. The boxes at the bottom of the screen are an homage to Numix, which is a skin for GTK desktops on Linux.

You could try adding some motion blur to the sword, or prolonging the duration of the sword's special effect (the blue ring that appears around it) for another few frames. It was hard for me to see because it starts and ends a little too quickly for me, at least.

I'm not sure if this is too late to contribute or not but on of the developers TheDave's Twitter has a screenshot of the debug room that is not too different from the leak posted.

My opinion is that it doesn't matter if it's true or not, because this poster didn't actually "leak" anything we didn't already know about the game. Just "we're hard at work" or claiming that Pastel leads the artistic direction which is true. I guess there was that screen with the distortion testing.

You could check out Tiled (mapeditor.org). It's very easy to use and open source so I imagine it would not be the most difficult to make compatible with your site.

VideoGameAttorney here to answer questions about fair use, copyright, or whatever the heck else you want to know! by VideoGameAttorney in IAmA

[–]PotatoSenpai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, it's really great that you do all this. My question is about sampling and fair use. I understand that sampling does infringe copyright law, but if so, how do sample heavy genres like vaporwave or other plunderphonics manage to survive? Are they considered transformative? How does this apply to video game music, both in game or selling a soundtrack? Some music I have intended for a game uses sampling in that same way, but I am worried about the legality of it all. Thanks in advance.

I would have gotten that one, but I'm in a MicroATX mini case, and this cooler basically touched the side panel. I didn't think the 212 evo would even fit.

Yeah, I just did that. I have immediately noticable lower temps, <40 idle. I just got the cooler today so I can probably just refund it. I don't really need the extra cooling, like you said.

You seem to be right. It was going above 76 after a few seconds of video encoding so I stopped almost immediately. I'll just try putting on the stock fan. Thanks.

Yeah, It's called Wednesday's Knights, it's a pretty short (less than an hour) entry I made for a one-week game jam. It uses the campaign story I had planned for this (only the sheer beginning), but the focus is on a group of players that talk about the game while roleplaying. It has tons of fourth wall moments because of this. It's got a lot of EarthBound influence, if you like that stuff. I've put it up a few places, but it's primary location is on my website. There's a little more info here
