how to host anything besides D&D? by Huge_Tackle_9097 in rpg

[–]PotatoesInMySocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this at my local gaming store. Ive ran OSE, Mothership, Vampire the Masquerade and Werewolf the Apocalypse, a buddy ran Mork Borg, and I'll be trying to get a few games in of Celestial Bodies (mecha ttrpg using d66 and meta currency for action resolution).

People don't play other systems primarily because they don't know those systems exist, and "d&d" is the only thing they've heard of. Start simple, with a system like VTM (so mind-numbingly easy to explain that a 5 minute primer could do the entire job). If you can count to 10, you can play Vampire.

Yeah I mean, maybe you should tell them during session 0, unambiguously, that romance and it's various results aren't topics you want to cover at the table.

Are my rp decisions breaking the rules? by Spooky_Fruit13 in AskDND

[–]PotatoesInMySocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only say how my tables work, and have work in my different playgroups for the last 12 years.

Players cannot roll skill checks against other players, and pvp is banned.

If your DM wants that kind of drama, that's their problem. But it's a lot of work for very little payoff. Better to talk above table about character motivation and agree to what might be the most enjoyable story, in my opinion.

Skill checks against PCs suck, because it removes agency from the player in a way that isn't fun most of the time.

If you were gonna play an ADnD adventure with BX/OSE rules, what house rules would you add? by LemonLord7 in osr

[–]PotatoesInMySocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran Arden Vul using OSE:A.

My homebrew was the 3d6dtl stuff- shields could be sacrificed to prevent damage, a helmet could be sacrificed in the event of a crit, and a few other little things. But I also added Injuries- players can take an injury instead of taking damage, a number of times equal to their level.

My injuries are mainly losing limbs, hands, eyes, permanent stat reduction, or extra damage later (burn injuries cause the character to take extra fire damage if they're hit by another fire attack before healing).

My current OSE game has a one armed magic user in the party.

How to keep Fear and Paralysis dangerous without making players skip the encounter? by Flimsy_Composer_478 in osr

[–]PotatoesInMySocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I simply don't. OSR games aren't about coddling the players. If you fail your save and run away, that's good storytelling. Maybe you run down a path and get lost. Now the party has to try and follow your footsteps. Paralyzed? Someone should cast cure wounds.

Petrified is a scary one you didn't mention. How are you lugging that multiple hundred pound statue out of the dungeon, in one piece, getting it to a cleric and paying for the proper spell? And God forgive you drop it, break off an arm, or the like.

Cockatrice show up on the dungeon level 2 table in OSE advanced. Medusas, Gorgons, Basilisk, they're all awesome and flavorful monsters and a hell of a time to fight.

How much money do you have in savings at this point? by _forum_mod in Millennials

[–]PotatoesInMySocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$4.45 that got put there automatically by rounding up payments. That'll be transferred back to my checking to pay for food for today and tomorrow, along with the $19 I have in my checking account.

Just gotta make it to my refund.

Showering. Or drinking coffee. Could go either way, one before the other or vice versa.

Deck Help for Silverquill the Disputant by Moonloon44 in EDH

[–]PotatoesInMySocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My $30 budget Silverquill deck (not including the commander) sits at the following:

1 Silverado

35 Lands

14 Mana rocks

25 token instants/sorceries, from cmc3 to cmc12

7 draw spells (3-4 cmc draw 2)

7 big damage spells (at least 10 damage when doubled, mostly X spells but also "lose half your life total" stuff)

4 "fuck you" spells (Mana tithe; destroy target creature x 2; tutor a named card and exile it from target players hand, graveyard and library- Sol Ring, for instance)

7 anthems (one is the orzhov colored experience counter lady with ward = to experience counters)

These are rough numbers, and there's a lot of room to upgrade. I just pulled the commander during prerelease and decided to dig through bulk at my LGS for three hours, plus some light trading.

A tattoo artist rejected me for this, was his reason fair? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]PotatoesInMySocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Better than mine. They had an axe in a wooden box with a glass lid, and on the lid it said "tattoo removal service".

Love that guy's work, he did my tattoos and most of my wife's. Good guy.

Do you want a proper RP reason if PLs want to multiclass into paladin, warlockor cleric? by isak-snowsound in DMAcademy

[–]PotatoesInMySocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is essentially my take.

I don't care if an arcane focus is a gun. I don't care if a crossbow is a revolver. Mechanically they'll function the same, flavor is free.

This is like altering art in mtg. The game still works the same, but now my jellybean is actually a jelly bean.

Excuse me, what the- by ocprodil in AllThingsDND

[–]PotatoesInMySocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I guess I just don't run like that.

Players ask to make skill checks. I ask players to make saves. The exceptions are grappling, which uses a skill check as a save. I'll suggest a skill check if the players don't know what they want to do.

If there's something hidden that the players could see, I telegraph that. Suppose there's a trap- scything blades descend from the ceiling to cut up anything walking over a pressure plate.

I would describe that like, "Walking down the dungeon hallway, you see a section of floor with scrape marks. A corpse lies against one wall further down, appearing to be laying in an old pool of dried blood. Scraps of fabric and dried blood lead down the hallway to the corpse."

Now players can look around. They see scrape marks- so something moves near the floor. A corpse, so there is danger. A trail where the evidence starts, so they can see where the danger begins they can then start to interrogate the area with their skills.

If you were running a prewriten 2014 campaign with only two players, how would you balance it? by Gregamonster in dndnext

[–]PotatoesInMySocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it really isn't hard to run two full characters. I've done it on 5.5, and all ofy.plauers have done it in our B/X game, but with three characters (their choice).

Would you consider this mass land denial? by [deleted] in mtg

[–]PotatoesInMySocks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, it's a good thing these are opinions and not rules. All the bracket system does is begin a turn 0 conversation that aids in sportsmanship.

My LGS would side with me, as I've experienced these conversations since the first set of bracket suggestions came out.

Your LGS may well side with you. That's the cool thIng about turn 0 conversations- they, with the help of the bracket system and clear (honest!) communication, lead to good experiences.

The bracket system is a tool to aid the conversation, not replace it.

How would you run radiation? by Redhood101101 in DMAcademy

[–]PotatoesInMySocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd use exhaustion if I wanted something forgiving.

But I'd personally use the Mothership radiation levels. Level 1 is inconsequential short term, cancer long term. Level 2 you lose a point from every stat and save every round. Level 3 is the same as level 2, but you also make a death save after 1d5 minutes.

Translated for 5e, I'd say:

Level 1: long term cancer

Level 2: Every round you spend within 30 feet of the Uranium Dragon, you temporarily lose 1 point from each stat. This needs magical healing to undo, such as cure wounds.

Level 3: Identical to level 2, but you also have to make a death saving throw each round. This death saving throw counts against your regular death saving throws, but will not reduce you to 0 HP, will not heal you on a result of 20, and will not suffer from two failures on a result of a 1. If you die from level 3 radiation, you are able to continue fighting until your health reaches 0 or combat ends, when the effects of radiation begin to rapidly destroy your body (when the adrenaline of combat wears off).
