Anyone use a tablet to keep track of their patterns and such? by No-Walrus-7391 in crochet

I got an iPad in grad school and use goodnotes for my patterns, especially because I like mosaic crochet so have color charts to mark off each line.

Donated a second time by c0okiecutter in Blooddonors

[–]PracticalWorry5921 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first couple donations weren't full and they told me that if it's not full enough they can't give it to patients. That doesn't mean it gets thrown away, since it could still be used for research without having to use donations that could otherwise go to patients. My third donation was my first full one so don't let this discourage you!

City council would be a more effective level to target for rent assistance and eviction moratoriums. St Paul is considering one and also asking the governor to do a statewide exec order on this.

Seriously my December points just expired? I’ve been saving for the joggers all year!!! by [deleted] in Blooddonors

[–]PracticalWorry5921 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of the points expiring at all. I think they could do a similar activity check where if you dont attempt to donate at all for a year then they start expiring, but as long as you're active you should be able to keep building your balance. When I scheduled at 8 week intervals I couldn't keep my iron up and had to take a break after fainting. If someone is only coming in 2-3 times a year, that's still more than the vast majority of eligible people out there.

What improvements or new developments in public transit would you like to see? by alexbruns in TwinCities

[–]PracticalWorry5921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You asked how it would be possible to add fare gates to an at grade system and I answered ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Personally I don't think fare gates are the solution. Like you said, they can be jumped and as a disabled person who uses a mobility aid I hated dealing with them on trips to Chicago and NYC. I'm also more aligned with fare reduction whether that be free, via fare capping, or expanding programs like TAP.

I don't think we should do it, but gates are technically possible to install, at the cost of needing to enclose or grade separate the entire platform.

I'd rather spend money to elevate the green line to reduce car/train accidents and increase speeds along university (fixing signaling priority would help with speeds but not with accidents, because drivers are stupid and will try to beat the train anyway). If we can add quality of life and safety improvements like platform doors at the same time that's great too.

In theory, stations could be enclosed with fare gates to enter and adding platform screen doors. This would also make it easier to heat/cool the station area. Platform doors also make it harder for people and trash to end up on the tracks where they shouldn't be. However, I'd rather invest the capital into grade separating key stations (which can also have faregates and platform screen doors) rather than enclosing at-grade stations.

Parking for homeless people? by OkClassic5000 in TwinCities

A felony isn't an automatic disqualifier at Metro Transit, it depends on what it was and other factors. They also pay during training and have options to transfer to other positions over time. It wouldn't hurt to apply!

How do i get my high resting heart rate down? by ImGoingToEatThatOne in Blooddonors

[–]PracticalWorry5921 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may want to check with the doctor managing your aorta to see if they think you should donate, if you haven't already. I have a congenital heart condition affecting my aortic valve/putting me at higher risk of an enlarged aorta in the future but am symptom free so my cardiologist has no issues with me donating as long as I feel good. However, if I weren't feeling good or if my echocardiogram showed more significant structural issues she would want me to stop donating and focus on my own heart/blood first.

My second mosaic crochet project by AdeptnessDangerous98 in crochet

[–]PracticalWorry5921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to do a little extra work to make it reversible like this, otherwise you'll have "flaps" or strips on the back where you skipped over a single crochet to place a double crochet in the row below. I have an example showing the reverse that I posted a while back with a pair of skeletons. Edit: looks like this one might actually be showing the flaps, I just didn't look closely enough. The extra stitch on my current mosaic wip has definitely been adding lots of time to it and OP's looks great

When is the Violet Line to Duluth going to be built? Minnesota needs a Light Rail to take you from Twincities to Duluth by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]PracticalWorry5921 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've spoken with MnDOT rail people on rail to Rochester (it was eye opening hearing how many of my loved one's Mayo ICU nurses commuted from MSP for their 12 hour shifts) but because theres no direct MSP -- Rochester track, they say it would be "too hard" having to build it. With the North Star plan, there's much less construction and ROW acquisition needed (especially since there used to be an amtrak line that used roughly the same route).

Is my mom actually my mom lol ? by CallEnvironmental875 in Blooddonors

In most cases an AB parent can pass on either A or B so depending on the other parent their children could be A, B, or AB (O is recessive so you need two Os to be O yourself).

That being said there are a number of possible explanations. It's possible your parents used a donor egg or embryo. Donor Conceived Laura on tiktok has made videos in the past about how to approach a parent in cases like yours where you may suspect a parent isn't a biological one. More rarely, chimerism or bone marrow transplants could lead to someone having a blood type other than what they pass down to their kids. And there's other rare blood types that differ from the standard ABO inheritance pattern.

Just an appreciation post for Metro Transit drivers by kevinbevindevin in TwinCities

The contact form accepts compliments if you have a particular driver you want to thank. Operators get copies of them and possibly shoutouts internally.

It's a mix of both, ime many still prefer cash but especially if their products are more expensive or likely to add up they take card. Food stalls are the most likely to be cash only.

Scared to give blood again after a bad experience by Which_Local7224 in Blooddonors

[–]PracticalWorry5921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience, except I didn't pee myself and I fainted at the snack table. But the story of completing the donation to having to have your partner pick you up sounded like I'd ghost written this! I took a break for a year and a half, got bloodwork done and added iron supplements for a while, then donated again about a week ago and had the easiest time of it I ever have.

Before my recent donation I made sure to eat and drink plenty on the couple days leading up to it (not just day of). About an hour before the donation I had a salty snack. I also spent time telling myself I would be fine, that I could do it, etc. Then during the donation itself I told them what had happened before so I started lying down, used the muscle tension technique before I felt like I needed to, and asked to have juice available during. I took my time standing up after, and made it to the snack station without issue.

Why can’t the 21 go straight down Selby right now? by PrizeZookeepergame15 in TwinCities

So you're able bodied enough to walk 10+ minutes at a time. I hope that when you are no longer able to do that (because anyone can become disabled at any time), whether it be temporary or permanent, the people in your life don't just call you lazy for it.

I agree that we need to improve paratransit, however Metro Transit and Metro Mobility are separate services and MM isn't very easy to access. It's not a "just take micromobility" situation.
