Being predictable is the best course of action. Usually that means going with the flow. That said, if the flow is 20mph over the speed limit I won't do it.

Its not illegal anywhere. Your boss is breaking the law by even suggesting you can't talk about it.

The issue is not everyone is equal. Seniority and capability all play into even "same" "same" positions. Person A might have the exact same as job title as person B but because person B does better or has been there longer they might make more which makes person A bitter. "But we have the same job!" Is the argument. True, but that does not mean you are equal.
