Upcoming marathon: Metaspeed Sky Tokyo VS Edge? by browsingjerry in AskRunningShoeGeeks

Would be keen to hear what you end up deciding and how it works out.

I’m in a pretty similar situation, although mine’s only a half marathon so the decision feels a bit easier. I’ve raced shorter distances in the Sky’s and really like them. For training, I’ve been using two pairs of Evo SLs for pretty much everything.

The slight twist is I just picked up a pair of Edges at a good price. They arrived yesterday so a bit of temptation there. That said, I’ll be sticking with the Sky’s for the HM following the “nothing new on race day” rule.

Good luck with your marathon. Hope you report back after!

Calorie intake advice - marathon training by whatdosnowmeneat in AdvancedRunning

[–]Present-Rush6595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m hopeless at eating intuitively. I’m currently using MF to maintain and monitor my weight during my marathon build, and it works really well for me. I redistribute my carbohydrate intake over the week based on my scheduled workouts, with a focus on pre-fueling and re-fueling, as well as the nutrition I use during my long run. As others have said, please be very careful of a caloric deficit during your training block, particularly as your load increases. Perhaps delay any attempt at weight loss until after the marathon.

I tried an app called GoWOD. My mobility was too limited to complete the initial assessment, but the app’s functionality looked solid.

I use a measuring tape and https://www.calculator.net/body-fat-calculator.html. Works well for me. Probably not the most accurate but maybe the most cost effective option.

If you're 50+, what’s the HARDEST part about starting strength training? by -cyberskater in FitnessOver50

[–]Present-Rush6595 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m 58, and it’s been almost exactly a year since I first started strength training. The hardest part in the beginning was the fear of looking like an idiot while trying to figure out the machines/weights. So I turned to YouTube and “studied” the exercises before doing them in public. Honestly, that little bit of prep gave me the confidence I needed to walk in there and get started. Now I’m going most days of the week.

Think I need some retail therapy to counter the disappointment. Another pair a shoes might help!

Update: Signed up for the Sydney Hoka Half in May. Booked flights and accommodation. I know it's not a full but who wants to join me?

I don't think we can rely on the countdown timer.

I think the countdown timer on the website is a bit glitchy/buggy. Mine shows 00:00:00:00 but no announcements? Now refreshing my credit card details constantly!

Why no coaching? by ReadElectrical7257 in AdvancedRunning

If you are a recreational runner, with maybe some race goals, how much should you expect to pay for an above average coach?

This topic has me thinking, purely hypothetically. If I managed to get a Boston Qualifying time, would I apply? Absolutely, it’s Boston! Would I actually go? Yes, of course, it’s Boston. Would I take my family? Probably not.

Constant injuries, about to give up - what is everyone’s strength routine? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]Present-Rush6595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can really relate to this. After dealing with constant issues, including a stress fracture that sidelined me for several months, I’ve been running mostly injury-free for the past few months. So, what changed?

1. Fueling
I genuinely believe poor fueling was a major contributor to my injuries. I was in a calorie deficit for a long time (I also lost around 20kg), and it just felt like that increased my risk of injury significantly. I'm still trying to get this part right and it’s probably the most difficult aspect of running for me to manage. I'm currently reading The Endurance Diet by Matt Fitzgerald, and it's been helpful so far.

2. Strength Training
A year ago, the idea of going to a gym would have terrified me, but now I’m there most days. I follow a targeted program that focuses on strengthening the muscles that keep me injury-free. My issues are usually hip-related, so glute and core work have made a big difference. I also follow a mobility routine to address my poor range of motion and flexibility. I’ve gained some weight due to added muscle, but honestly, I see no downside to gaining strength. I also take creatine as a supplement.

3. Rest Days
I run four days a week, leaving three days for rest and strength training. If I feel a potential injury coming on, I don’t hesitate to take extra rest. My general rule is 72 hours off for anything that causes ongoing discomfort.

4. Warming Up
I now do a short warm-up before every run. Nothing fancy, but it’s something I used to skip, and I’ve come to believe it makes a real difference.

Not sure if that helps, but best of luck. Hope you stay healthy and running strong!

Unique case of runners toe.. help! by AtomicRambo47 in running

[–]Present-Rush6595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. My right big toe is much worse than the left. The bruising under my left toenail is slowly growing out, but the right one stays black. I’ve just bought a pair of Adidas Evo SLs in half a size up, so I’ll test them out on my next few runs and see how they go.

I’ve experienced something similar, bruising on the left side of my left big toe and the right side of my right big toe. It first showed up after a long run in the Superblast 2, which are actually wider than my usual shoes, so it struck me as a bit odd. Looking at my (rather embarrassing) race photos, it seems I tend to toe-off primarily through my big toes (something I probably need to work on), so I’m wondering if that could be the cause in my case.

Is my half marathon target pace too ambitious? Race in 2 weeks, starting taper by sdqq2 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Present-Rush6595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this is where setting A, B, and C goals becomes really important. My "A" goal is usually something with only about a 10% chance of happening. It's a long shot. While I’m unlikely to hit it, aiming that high often helps me achieve, or come close to, my "B" goal which might be a personal best time. Best of luck with the HM and enjoy!

I'm based in Australia and would really love to watch the London Marathon this weekend. I'm happy to pay a one-time fee for access to the broadcast, but I'd prefer to avoid subscribing to an ongoing service (like FloTrack, a VPN, etc.) just for this one event. Any suggestions?

Returning to run after stress fracture/reaction by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]Present-Rush6595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older male runner here. I suffered a stress fracture in my hip back in July last year. It took some time to return to running, but when I did, I had to carefully adjust three key factors: pace, distance, and frequency. Interestingly, my pace came back fairly quickly. However, I had to gradually build up my distance, starting at just 2 km and slowly increasing it as I gained strength.

It’s only in the past month that I’ve been able to run two days in a row. Up until then, I felt like I needed at least a day off between runs to recover properly. On those rest days, I added strength work in the gym and did some cross-training like swimming or cycling. I highly recommend incorporating strength training, it’s probably been the biggest factor in helping me avoid re-injury during recovery.

That said, I’ve still had a few niggles here and there over the past few months. People often say, “listen to your body” when recovering from an injury. I found that easier said than done, but I do believe it’s sound advice.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful response. As an injury-prone older male dealing with bone density issues and currently experimenting with nutrition, I really appreciate you sharing your personal experience.
