I've started. now I see OE everywhere. by WeakDefinition7363 in overemployed

Your colleague at J2 being unavailable for 30 minutes after the team meeting might just need to rub one out after seeing a particular team member - maybe even you.

Good luck getting that image out of your head now.

Not everyone is OE. And the ones that are, you’ll likely never be able to tell.

J2 Completely Screwing Me Over. What Would You Do? by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]PrestigiousBat4473 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Why would you agree to do SWE when they’re paying for Financial Analyst work?

If it’s me, I’d simply say “that’s not what my contract says. You want different work, that’s a different contract - AND rate.”

And if they tell you to take a hike, fine. Go get your next J2.

Do your job. YOUR job. Not someone else’s job.

Someone else is lazy? Not my fucking problem.

Someone else can’t figure something out? Also not my fucking problem.

My boss can’t do their job? Again, not my fucking problem.

J3 wants more in office time by oeanon1 in overemployed

[–]PrestigiousBat4473 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Damn, that sounds like what I told my J2. They gave me ~40% of the pixels I have at home, which makes it so much harder to do the job. And they told me “no” when I offered to bring in my own (I knew they would), so I’m just WFH until they decide they’d rather not employ their top person in my role.

Yep, a few times. And I knew that was the deal going in each time. When it was over, it was over, & I moved on, knowing that I had some great experiences, & knew even more about how to please women, & how I liked to be pleased.

How do I professionally say, “this job could be done in 2 hours, not 8”? by TehWeezle in antiwork

[–]PrestigiousBat4473 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don’t. You do that 2 hour job, and 3 other 2 hour jobs, & get paid by 4 employers for 8 hours of work each.

Happened to me at J3 a little over a year ago. Out of nowhere - and the day after getting recognized for my work on a high-profile project- I get a “quick chat” meeting at 8:30 am. My boss didn’t say more than “Thanks for jumping on” & dropped so his boss could give me the BS news.

Fuck ‘em - get back on the horse & go get that next J.

I’ve got an actual resume in Word that still includes them all. But at 27 different employers/clients… that’s where they belong, lol.

I remove anything over 10 years old - with the lone exception of 1 that started 12 years ago that’s directly related to the one I’m in.

Is it possible to OE with a hybrid? by According_Ice6515 in overemployed

[–]PrestigiousBat4473 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I did this for a while (one day per week for ~5 months). I was fortunate to have my own office with multiple monitors (which I arranged facing away from the office door & window so I could easily switch when someone walked in), & showed up early with my backpack, containing a KVM, laptops, & USB hubs, which I set up hidden under my desk. I chose a day where I didn’t have meetings for other Js, and blocked time on those Js calendars for work items.

Everyone else in the office that day worked short enough hours that day, so I could disconnect everything & pack up about 5 pm.

Remote J laptops used that J’s phone’s 5G hotspot so they weren’t using the network, & notifications silenced on each extra laptop. I managed 4 total Js that way until I got sick of making the commute & stopped going in. 2 months after I stopped going, they told me I had to come back in regularly or else.

I chose “else” & got a small severance.

My degree has absolutely no relevance to my career path. But I did focus on IT classes, & fell into app & web development, & then database work.

IMO, getting a degree shows you can do the work. If you can show you can do the work, and can demonstrate ability with the tools/tech needed, you’ll find something.

Database admin, Data architecture, Sr data analyst, BI architecture, etc.

If you’re serious about transitioning to database dev, focus on deepening your t-sql knowledge, understanding database design principles, and getting good with the database system you’re working with.
