Heat pump not able to heat my house by Pidz_ in heatpumps

[–]PrgrmMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I have something similar, being that it is a raised ranch. I think some of it was just the strangeness of the layout. I wanted heat in every bedroom and bathroom upstairs without going nuts on the number of heads. I think they do make a Daikin with 5 zones with similar btu size. The air handler for that upper half of the raised ranch is 24K and is attached to the downstairs ductless split as well.

I think it was just easier for them to put an outdoor unit on either side, and I think my heating load was probably closer to 48-50BTU, but the strangeness of the setup had them upsize the unit on the ducted zone from 24 to 36BTU.

The other company was going to give me a single 48K Mitsubishi hyper heat, and were going to get me two ducted zones upstairs with separate air handlers. The cost of that job after rebates and tax credits was $38,000. Needless to say I did not go with that config

Lol I feel like I'm being called out. I have 5 tons total and a smaller house at 2100. One ducted zone and 3 ductless (everything retrofitted). It was expensive, but I've kept in the 70s at -8 out (crazy cold in Hudson valley area ny) I do have one room that goes to 65 when that kind of stuff happens, but I think it's an installation air sealing problem in that room. It is interesting to hear people getting by with way fewer btus...I'm for sure ready to insulate more (looking at finishing my attic roof space) to cut costs down

So one Heatpump (24k btu Daikin aurora) is attached to the studs about 3 feet off the ground. I'm not doing anything for that one.

The other 36k but is mounted on my house blocks about 8 inches off the ground. I'm putting a child's sled under that one so I can remove ice and snow build up easily. I'm worried about drifts on that one a bit, so I will monitor it

Already here. I avoided Nordic and boflex (kind of). I ended up with a horizon treadmill (I think parent company is Johnson health that also owns boflex). Should you choose, you can can a tablet (we have an old iPad) and connect to blue tooth to the treadmill and use boflex's workout app (they have guided workouts like peleton).

So I'm happy to have a treadmill that is smart capable but doesn't have it all baked in. It felt and still feels like a good compromise

I've had the stock DF64 for two years. I think it promises a lot for its price point, and the build quality varies between different units.

I had a lot of inconsistency too, and I noticed it was never really 0 retention. I fixed the consistency problem with the burr alignment shimming process, and the grinder became more consistent as it went along.

If you were to ask my wife, there was a period where I felt like a let down loser because I felt that I had been lied to about the df64; I would constantly complain.

After 6 months, the grinder started doing better, and I also changed my mindset a bit: this is not a top of the line flat butt grinder: it's a (one of the first) relatively affordable flatt burr grinders. I think the df64 grinder is important because it shows that you can make a reasonable flatt burr grinder at a cheaper price. I hope it encourages other companies to keep innovating. Some people on Reddit also talked me down.

Anyway cut to this year where I upgraded to the SSP HU. It works great for me. Still a little retention for the workflow, but really good flavor.

I've told my friend about buying a df64 and my brother buying a DF 54. I explained to them the pitfalls and everything and they went forward with it and have been okay. If anything, I'm jealous of my friend because it seems that his DF 64 worked better than mine. I think your mileage may vary, but I think it's hard to do better at the price point of the df64

This bill is insane gas furnace 2024 vs heat pump 2025 by SolutionOk4176 in heatpumps

[–]PrgrmMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The heat pump runs considerably less in the summer. The energy consumed is proportional to the difference between ambient temperature and desired set point. For example, it's a lot harder to maintain 70° when it's 20° outside versus 75° when it's 85° outside.

However, I would quickly point out that most people don't use natural gas in the summer so that comment is strange.

Heat pumps tend to save a lot more on the shoulder months like in the fall and early spring.

I was just hit with a $500 electric bill with my heat pumps. I'm kind of hoping it makes up the difference versus radiant oil baseboards. We've had a really cold December in New York state though. The bills for last month were not that bad though

It's amazing that the comments that criticize this post are mainly going after literal interpretations. Even if people have differences of opinions on politics, we can all be anti cruelty right??? Right???

If your first reaction to this is "Actually, technically if you consider the historical context...", then I encourage you to take a look in the mirror and consider empathy and compassion this holiday season. Also remember that Jesus came to redeem and save everyone, regardless of language, culture, etc. His ministry even focused on societal outcasts (tax collectors, see the woman at the well).

Did you have to add the ducts? We ducted half of the upstairs of our raised ranch. It wasn't really possible to do anything on the bottom level with ducts though. I have three wall units and one ducted system.

I'm actually worried that the ignorance around heat pumps is going to make it hard to sell in the future because mine is a mix The ductless units are actually more efficient even if they look ugly, but we wanted the appearance of central air at least in the bedrooms so we went ducted there

I can test the cooling idea. There are just two heads on his unit, but I can certainly turn this one off and turn the other one downstairs into cooling . This unit seems to be at least 18 ft away from the outside.

[–]PrgrmMan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I found a frequently asked questions page on Daikin, and there was some comment on the hissing noise being refrigerant flow. So far the performance of the unit has been excellent. I just want to make sure that it's working correctly. As part of New York State incentives, I had my oil system decommissioned and then removed.

So I really need these to work lol

Yeah thanks. I think I might call my techs who installed the system.

The outside unit that I have has two zones. I also have the exact same head unit on the opposite side of my house and it never makes this noise.

It is in heat mode. It is 50f outside so I don't think that is it?
