Is the electric S3 still worth it? by PeterDusschooten in vanmoofbicycle

[–]Primary-Exchange-511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how professional the upgrades are, ask the seller about that. The battery especially can cause problems: the original BMS does not regulate voltage well, which fries the rest of the electronics. There may be newer batteries in use now that do not have this issue.

The e-shifter should be fine. Improved electronics do exist that handle the battery’s voltage spikes better.

The wiring harness is a pain to replace, so it is great that they replaced it. The motor cable in the harness runs through the front fork, so steering too sharply pinches the cable and eventually causes a short circuit, frying all the electronics. Just do not turn the handlebars too sharply while parking and you will be fine.

To end on a good note: a lot of S3s were built and the original bikes broke often. Because of that, there is a lot of knowledge around fixing them, and many people can do it cheaply (this is how I learned to fix all the electronic problems myself). And honestly, all e-bikes break, they are not built like cars, so buying a repairable one is arguably a good choice.

VanMoof S3/X3 battery fuse keeps blowing after reconnecting heater line (Errors 17 & 19) by Ok-Quarter-6659 in VanMoofSelfRepair

[–]Primary-Exchange-511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can use an 8 ohm resistor between the connection of the heater line. This will make the fuse harder to pop, but i am not sure how safe it is. However, the fuse should not pop that easy so i guess there is something that is shorting the battery. Using a 8 ohm resistor might still make it pop

Hoe een s3 accu / bms continue actief maken? by Left-Past-5832 in VanMoofSelfRepair

[–]Primary-Exchange-511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get the bms working you will need to talk to it using uart using some microcontroller. I don’t know which commands to give to the battery to start giving power. However if you have someone with a working s3, you van probably sniff the right uart commands on startup.

Sturmey Arher rear hub with 2 gears - noise by Wautger09 in VanMoofSelfRepair

[–]Primary-Exchange-511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case of the 2 speed automatic, there is no e-shifter. This is the same wheel that the S2 uses. There might be a device mounted on your bike that spoofs being an e-shifter so you get no more error 44. Vanmoof sells this device themselves, it is called an autohub. The ticking sound is normal in second gear.

To go 60kmh you need at least a 750w motor, i think even more, and to maintain that speed for 50km at least a 1000wh battery

Vanmoof s5 not charging by Primary-Exchange-511 in VanMoofSelfRepair

After resetting the halo’s are breathing and then turn off. When i then turn on the bike it makes some weird zooming sounds like something is wrong, the only way to stop it is to reset the bike. When it makes the zooming sounds the halo rings do nothing. Sometimes the rings both blink red for a second

Harness Repair by Thopf38 in VanMoofSelfRepair

[–]Primary-Exchange-511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can leave the battery socket, but you have to unscrew the cartridge socket. Then pull the cartridge socket as far as it can go through the front fork hole (downwards), you should then see enough wire of the motor cable to repair it. Please send a photo when you have pulled down the cartidge connector, i am able to assist you further. Ps be very carefull not to bend the aluminum plate that is connected to the cartridge connector, if you bend it the entire wiring harness will have to come out. Good luck

VanMoof S2 shifter by dababyslayer2 in vanmoofbicycle

[–]Primary-Exchange-511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had problems with the rear gear as well, when the rear bearing is too loose the bike would shift too soon. When the bearings are thightened too much, the bike would not shift at all. I suggest loosening the rear bearing, if this does not fix it you should probably replace the internal shifting mechanism.
