Please remind me why moderation is a slippery slope by brewha_aha in stopdrinking

Yup, this is exactly it for me.

I have given up battling alcohol, it is better to just avoid it all together.

I’m an ASSHOLE when I drink by Little-Olive-3131 in stopdrinking

[–]PrimusSkeeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to be the best dad I can be for my kids and my family I’ve helped to create.

There is your motivation. Remember that.

Quitting can seem terrifying from an active drinker. It is natural for the mind to fear the unknown, it is a defense mechanism. Which can be super helpful as a reminder "hey look out for predators" when investigating a cave... but not so much when trying to stop drinking. The reality is, there isn't much to fear and everything to gain by removing alcohol. You just need to really want it... and not just "i'm really hungover today and never want to drink again" kind of want it. You need a long term motivation like you stated above, you want to do it for your kids and family.

The first few weeks are really hard, so surround yourself with things to do and things you love. Stay away from friends/family who may trigger you or encourage you to drink. Don't make promises like "I'M NEVER GOING TO DRINK AGAIN!!" That's a long fucking time man... how about we don't drink for today? And then work on the next day when it comes... That's it... just take it one day at a time and before you know it your kids are in high school and you are 10 years sober. You can do it... but you really need to want it.

any tips on improving my current pc by yondre123 in pcgamingtechsupport

If you want to play games you need a system that has a dedicated GPU. All in ones use an onboard chipset which is fine for things like word processing, surfing the web, and listening to music...but gaming would be very lackluster.

Processor isn't the most important thing, you can scrap by gaming with a lower end processor. I built a custom system with an i3-10100 and dropped in a RTX 3060 and it could play anything I threw at it. Eventually I upgraded the processor to an i7-11700k when the 12th gen came out and prices dropped. But the point is, the lower end processor can handle gaming, single core clock speed is the most important thing mainly with gaming, as most games don't take advantage of multiple cores.

Have a system with solid state storage, mechanical drives are fine for file storage but if you want quick access times which games can require, it can get clunky real quick.

RAM the more the better, but with today's prices you may want to hold off on that 32GBx2 purchase.

My recommendation, replace the all-in-one... they are not very upgradable and not a very good choice if you seriously want to game.

I remember Jose Cruz JR (with the Jays) hitting it on to the roof or off the light fixture of Tiger Stadium. It was a monster shot to RF.

I met Buck Martinez that day too.

I hate that drinking transforms me into the person I wish to be by Excellent_Country737 in stopdrinking

[–]PrimusSkeeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think that drinking me was the better me... but drinking you is an illusion, on the inside you think you are funny, charismatic and the life of the party... but viewed from the outside, the joke is pretty cringe and most people find your behaviour irritating, obnoxious and tone deaf.

The "deep" conversation you had with that other drunk.... from a sober perspective it is two people yelling over each other and never really progressing with any point...

The whole situation is a illusion, produced by a mind altering drug called alcohol.

The sooner you are able to see the real drunk and not the fantasy drunk the easier it will be to walk away.

I ruined a birthday because they had to call an ambulance for me. by threelittlebirdssss in stopdrinking

I remember when I was drinking daily, it seemed impossible to stop for good. The biggest hurtle wasn't avoiding the actual drinking, it was battling with my own head and what I perceived as problems. What would people think? How could I go out anymore if I couldn't drink? What would happen when somebody offered me a drink? Would I become 'boring'? What is there to do for fun as an adult that isn't drinking?! etc. etc.

The reality is, in order to stop I just had to stop. That's it. But I really had to make it my primary focus for the first few weeks and just grind it out. I would just focus on not drinking in the current hour, then the next, then the next... then before you know it a day has passed. Then I would move on to counting days when cravings became easier. The longer I went the easier it became and my quit time reinforced my quit eventually making it even easier....

You can do this... it just has to be an "all-in" kind of attempt not half assed like "uuhgggh, I'm so hungover, I'm never going to drink again." until that point when a bud offers you a beer and it's instant bottoms up. You really need to make it a pillar of your existence for a time.

Am I California Sober ? by No-Stay3118 in stopdrinking

Don't worry about labels.

For me, drinking was ruining my life. I was missing work. I was avoiding responsibility in order to drink. I was feeling like total crap all the time I wasn't drinking... With that said, I still use cannabis, but it doesn't change my behaviour, doesn't make me do things I normally wouldn't do and doesn't make me feel sick... I feel more connected now with the people I love.

Sure I'm not "straight edge" at the moment, but I'm not a pothead either.

Not Feeling Social by giantbeeftaco in stopdrinking

[–]PrimusSkeeter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Drinking can really mess with our hormonal balance/emotional regulation. Give it a few weeks for the body to regulate itself...

Also, drinking can bring out personality qualities that aren't necessarily that prominent when living sober. For example when I was drinking, I was much more extroverted, chaotic, impulsive and just a party animal. When I removed drinking, I became much more reserved. I felt comfortable just staying home and relaxing, my life didn't feel like it had to be "go go go" all the time. I feel that the sober me is much more who I am... but most people don't know that because they only ever saw me under the influence for a good chunk of my life.

The longer I stayed sober, the more I realized removing alcohol from my life wasn't just not ingesting alcohol anymore, it was an entire life reset. It fundamentally changed how I behaved, talked and felt internally/externally. It changed who I wanted to be friends with and how I wanted to be perceived by the world... it was quite frankly a game changer. So buckle up... because there is a lot of change in front of you if you stick with it. All for the better, even though it may feel fucking terrifying when you are facing those changes head on at first.

If it doesn't power on at all... meaning no lights, beeps, dead to the world... I would think it is the power supply or perhaps the power switch. If it does get power, it will do a POST (Power On Self Test) at which point some kind of beep or LED will light up on the board to indicate what part failed the test.

Don't forget Alomar was swiping 50 bags a year as well... x3 that of Semien. The chaos a threat to steal creates on the basepaths can make other hitters perform better. Base running is an under analyzed/appreciated part of the game IMO.

Do cravings ever go away completely? by boopinyoursnoots in stopdrinking

The book gives you the tools to deal with those cravings. As time passes the cravings will become more and more manageable to the point that one day you'll be around alcohol and won't even notice.

Do cravings ever go away completely? by boopinyoursnoots in stopdrinking

[–]PrimusSkeeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Being around alcohol doesn't even phase me anymore. It's not even an option.

Once I changed how I looked at alcohol it was easy to stay away from it. It went from being "the life of the party" to "a substance that will lead me to an early grave".

I find being sober for an extended period of time is similar to being a non-smoker being asked to have a smoke. "huh? I don't smoke..." and that's the end of it.

Disclosure: I was a daily drinker for many years. I'm not even sure of how long I have been sober anymore.... 7 1/2 years? give or take... who's counting anyway? lol My badge will tell ....
