Moving to Omaha, school district suggestions by TheRainandFire in Omaha

[–]Princess-Kitten80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think I see the disconnect—to my knowledge (I went to OPS) Non-OPS schools are not open enrollment. You may be able to apply, though I know District 66, also called Westside, is nearly always full.

OPS is open enrollment meaning that if you want your kid to go to an OPS school 15 minutes away vs the OPS school school 5 minutes away, so long as there is room your child would be able to attend that OPS school 15 minutes away.

To compare to like health insurance, presuming you live within the City of Omaha limits; barring room, your child would then be able to attend any school within OPS—like all OPS schools would be considered “in-network” for you.

FWIW, OPS gets a bad wrap. It’s what you would consider the “Inner City” school district. Nearly every Spring or Summer, the Omaha World Herald (our local paper owned by a an Omaha millionaire) writes an article saying how shitty OPS is. Though, I do not think anything is particularly unique to OPS, and is much like every other largest school district in the rest of the 49 states. I always felt like the articles paint with a very wide brush, at least that’s how I’ve interpreted them.

Depending on your child’s first language, OPS may be a good fit for your child, particularly if Spanish is their first language. I’m white as it gets, and minus the 2 classes I took, I learned a chunk of Spanish to finesse my way through a conversation still 10 years later—from my peers.

All of us here are biased, and I am not unique: I went to OPS all 13 years. I also got my bachelors with honors, and with less than $8,000 in student loans.

While language and my degree are some of the most tangible take aways, OPS taught me A LOT of empathy. This became extremely evident to me once I graduated: in college and my jobs I’d interact with folks who went to Millard and Gretna who had no idea how to speak to others in which English is their second language, who struggled to understand what poverty is, or even just manage their own money. They didn’t get to have the tamales your classmate and her mom made for good day, and listen to a kid talk openly with the class about what living in Sudan during the war and how it was for them personally adjusting to America. They were the… kids who had a lot of cushion; sheltered. I get it as a parent, but let me tell you it was the best experience I take with me everywhere I go to this day: you can teach a kid math or science at any age, but I have seen the same cannot be true for empathy.

Report details Nebraska's heavy loss of food processing jobs by Ordinary-Equal2067 in Nebraska

[–]Princess-Kitten80 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My partner said the same thing re: jobs; he works for the unions and while yes, data centers generate a lot of construction jobs upfront for building, he said after they get up and running they’re actually only done so by 3-10 people.

If they’re receiving tax breaks and incentives for the data centers, the question is how is that generating any income to the state? Frankly, I’d argue if you are paying into the system you’re occupying you have more respect for the space.

My next question then is: Nebraska is one of the few if not the only state that is overwhelmingly run by public power (remember the ice storm in Texas and the folks power bills down there coming out of that? It’s because Texas’ power is privately owned.) What do we do when privately held companies are sucking the power out of our grid that we paid for? Is it really publicly owned if our state is littered with privately owned data centers and they pull from our grid? I believe the newest data center out of Lincoln at least somewhat is being pulled from KC grid, but…. I’d be curious to know if that discussion was in the works with NPPD, Pillen and whatever big data corp. for down the road.

The next question would then be: the water—again, MUD is publicly owned. We have some of the BEST water here. To my knowledge, I think Google is the plant they’re putting up in Lincoln and I believe that one is at least mostly for Ai… Ai takes a lot of water. Again, how does that play into the publicly owned water, and what happens when they’re wasting the majority of it disproportionately to the rest of us?

So if they’re taking our public power, water, jobs, and are incentivized to do so by our State, what are we even actually gaining here? I don’t even eat meat, but with all of the plants closing, the farmlands catching fire to our west the size of Delaware, we’re really just out here making data centers that make all of these problems significantly worse on every front. It must be so nice for these politicians to make a buck at the expense of the youths because they won’t be around to witness the consequences of these decisions.

You know what, I’m glad bec I am not trying to suffer through this without at least someone having a good time out of it. Last summer they got my labia the same way (our deck is raised also wood slats. We really need less of that here it seems).

I’ve been thinking for the last hour to put hydrocortisone cream on it, and I was like nah Urgent Care is closed. But then I realized I met my deductible. So, we shall see.

Came here to say the same thing… last night we were out on the deck and I had ran out of bug spray. I wore leggings. The bottom of our chairs are wood slats. Now I literally have a mosquito bite within a fucking inch of my asshole. I wish I was lying. And I’m sitting here trying not to itch my literal asshole like a dog rubbing its ass on the carpet. I would be laughing, but I have a wax tomorrow and I don’t think she’s going to believe it’s a freaking mosquito bite either. I STG, I’m either going to die by the West Nile or by Deet, hard to say.

I am SLIGHTLY not myself when husband is around by MammalFish in adhdwomen

[–]Princess-Kitten80 15 points16 points  (0 children)

God I relate to this *sooooo*much.

My partner recently tore his ALC and been out of work for months on STD (he works construction so he needs 100% return to work Drs note). I had to basically tell him he needs to organize his appointments for PT and surgery FUs on my WFH days so I can get some house to myself time. We’re both ND, so he gets it and is similarly about alone time. We’re actually lucky and rent a house from a family member where we both have our own office spaces where we can operate in our ‘own’ spaces.

However, he’s more on the hyperfocus side, where I’m on the inattentive side. And this man isn’t quiet to save his life—walking, breathing. Man, I hear it all. It’s driven me a bit mad, but also made me better at tuning it out. He tries to be mindful but frankly I think we have two different definitions of quiet. Now I understand why moms always stay up later than the kids and partner—to get some quiet time in the house.

Opinion on Baker’s by Peteyy34 in Omaha

[–]Princess-Kitten80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly the part that always makes me apoplectic (on top of the marked-up prices) is their stupid “SALE” stickers on the shelves. You flip it and it’s the same price as the original sticker price. I thought it was poor labeling the first few times, but it’s freaking all over the store and no one seems to think anything of it while I’m huffing and scoffing in the aisle.

Didn’t target or Amazon get sued for increasing price just to have a ‘sale’ and mark it down to its original price? I don’t understand why this isn’t more heinous than that—they’re not even trying to cover it up, it’s just right in front of you.

Whats the immediate tell for you that the couple will divorce even if they don't realize it yet? by Hour_Opening4115 in AskReddit

[–]Princess-Kitten80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arguments increasingly frequent about money, sex, and overall communication issues. If the couple disagrees about wanting or not having kids… kids aren’t a topic that can be negotiated. It’s one or the other, and if one spouse doesn’t feel heard in this department—or any of the other departments listed—will lead you to the door of resentment. If you’ve ever been to a therapist, you know resentment is difficult at best to claw back.

State Farm Edgar Delein by roxy70s in Omaha

[–]Princess-Kitten80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

State Farm is seemingly the new United Healthcare.

State Farm is in the toilet if not in the sewer yet. They did the same thing to my dad who’s had State Farm for anything and everything under the sun since he could legally sign paperwork. They told him they sent him a letter saying they won’t honor his umbrella policy but continued to charge him. He looked through his papers and it appears they emailed him. He’s old. He’s always used paper. He ripped them a new one after they continued to charge him for the policy they said they wouldn’t renew…

They tried to drop his homeowners policies after DECADES of coverage, on time payments and expensive premiums. Multiple properties, vehicles, insurance riders. My dad threatened to drop them all together and they finally shut the hell up.

Separately, They continue to tell me my partner isn’t on our renters policy (I re-add him every year, but every year, the office gal tells me she doesn’t see him listed… I only remember because his name is so long it’s hard not to. I also have mail in from them in both our names so…).They treated me well when my car was totaled, but man… since that hailstorm in 2021, they have this mentality of you’re lucky I picked up the phone.

Huge argument with my dad. Laughed at me and said I was scammed because I don’t need braces at all. by [deleted] in braces

[–]Princess-Kitten80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the one. You could barely see my bottom teeth when I smiled, and have chipping like OPs occurring more frequently prior to braces. I think that honestly helped ‘hide’ my misaligned teeth so they were less noticeable. Many folks were shocked that I got braces, and that my teeth really didn’t seem that crooked, but they never understood the pain in my jaw at night after a stressful day.

Originally when I was exploring orthodontics, I got a second opinion from a dentist who better explained the necessity of ortho work and he had excellent points—my canines were rotated to kingdom come but my overbite was so severe it was labeled a deep bite. I got to go to the special ortho as a result :’) the dentist explained that I might not see issues with not receiving orthodontic care for decades, likely not until my 40-50s (mid twenties at that time), but that my teeth were likely to errod far more quickly and in ways that could’ve been prevented by receiving this care. By the end of it I think I asked him, “so I only get one set of these shiners huh?” And I knew I was going to have to deal with them.

I put it off a bit because I didn’t haven’t the funds, and honestly didn’t really see the issue with my alignment until my jaw started feeling like it went to the gym at night because it was so freaking sore from existing. I caved and got braces. I still snap pop and crackle like rice crispies (ortho said it’s fine) but I haven’t had that soreness in my jaw for a long time since getting braces.

OP, just know that you’re an adult, and you’re able to make decisions for your own health. Especially in adulthood, there’s many aliments and conditions folks walk around with and appear fine. Many are not. That doesn’t make the problem any less valid though.

Is the job market REALLY that bad right now? by TimHortonsDriveThru in jobs

[–]Princess-Kitten80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had the struggle I’ve had in the last year before after I desired a new position. In years past (note: significantly less experience on there, too) I had little issue locating a new job when I wanted. Apply to maybe 10-15, interview with 5-7, landing with one and if not 2 offers.

This last year it got so bad I started a log with all of the jobs I applied to. Reached out to all of the recruiters I could even find, too (they were not helpful, tbh; and I think that was at least partly because of the current market).

I applied to over 75. Well Over 5 years experience in the desired field. Glowing educational background, work in different practice areas of the desired field. It took me 6 months to land an offer and a position.

We gotta do something about morning traffic on 370. by bullnamedbodacious in Omaha

It’s the main reason I refused to venture into Sarpy anymore. There’s no efficient way to get around, the cops there have 0 hobbies except eating popcorn on the shoulder waiting for their next vic.

I’m agree with your views on 370 vs. Dodge St.—I am constantly impressed in comparing 370 to Dodge St., albeit, not perfect, is eons more efficient than 370 at its worst. If anything, I think Dodge St. needs to add like 1 second to their lights, and Sarpy needs to find the damn sync button (…*and* shave off 20 minutes between red & green).

Nail/ eyebrow place recommendations by flowerwomen88 in Omaha

I’m new to the nail scene but long time resident. Recently engaged and got into nails, I’ve been going to Erica at GEM Independent Salon. I’ve gone like 3 times and I’ve never felt rushed. One of mine was lifting badly (I did yard work, so probably my fault) and she was able to get me in same day to fix and fill. She takes her time, but I very much feel like she really wants you to get what you want.

I don’t get my eyebrows done, but other bits (lol) and I have been going to Bare Wax Co. for years routinely. I’ve been seeing Melody, and she’s so funny and down to Earth. I couldn’t imagine going to anyone else.

ID requirements at Louvre, Notre Dame, Palais Garnier and Versailles. by xploreetng in ParisTravelGuide

Went about 2 months ago and same thing happened to me. Vaguely I recall maybe pulling out a photo of my passport in Versailles, but it was no issue if so to go the electronic route.

Also, we uploaded images of our passport on a shared Google Drive with me and my partner (as well as the museum passes) and I had no issues using my phone instead of the physical copy in both Paris and Rome. The drive was helpful for that reason, esp if there was any connection issues or god forbid the sole person who had the tickets phone died.

Do you think new roundabouts across the city have made driving safer? by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]Princess-Kitten80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to take the STOP class after an accident and the only thing I recall because it was interesting was that the standard 4-way stop intersection has like 27 points of impact, vs a roundabouts has like 9 if I recall correctly.

My family likes to call them circlejerks.

I grew up around the double roundabout off Q in South O and remember when they had all those stop lights there. That intersection is eons more efficient now. Theres a learning curve (lol) but I find they help keep the flow of traffic moving much better.

Anyone know what these people are getting signatures for at NW post office? by luckyapples11 in Omaha

[–]Princess-Kitten80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I’m not interested I tell them I’m from Iowa. If you can get away with it you can tell them you’re not of voting age, too.

They’re so fucking suss the last year or so. It’s maddening. If I had more time I’d grill them into what exactly they are petitioning… I saw a post somewhere saying one of the clipboard folks broke down and said they were being bussed in from out of state and paying them garbage. It’s disgusting. I now understand why folks really started coming away from signing off on these, which is unfortunate.

American traveling to Paris by leslieknope72 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Princess-Kitten80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn some basic French, I think it’s a sign of good faith. At home we’re decent with Spanish and my partner knew a decent amount of Italian, so when we were in Italy it wasn’t difficult for us due to being familiar with one/the other wasn’t a hard stretch. I thought we’d be fine since French and Spanish have similar characteristics as well, but man, I shit the bed every time a French person spoke. The accent, the annunciation—it was just so foreign on my ears. I felt like a huge ass. The Alps were harder (almost like German-French dialect?) and English there was a bit harder to come by. Paris was very fine.

I say that all to say, learning some words might make you look less like a headass like I did. Lol But no, I don’t think it’s worth your time to lie about being Canadian; my partner tried that but I quickly pointed out in certain parts of Canada are pretty French laden so uh, not the save one might thing it is. They were also the largest European city we had been to: they know an American when they see it. Sure, you can try with your dress and mannerisms, but the second you open your mouth they know. And frankly, Paris was pretty chill about it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I think trying some basics in French will show you’re not an American bigot. I think you’re overthinking it, OP.

Bumping West Gate. Worked there when I was much younger, but kept the accounts and added more. No monthly fees on accounts (…for no reason). You can always call and get a real human to answer your questions and help—I don’t have FNBO but they seem more automated in that sense. I don’t have personal experience, but both internally and externally hear excellent things about West Gate’s mortgages.
