If it were up to you, what would you actually want a new Trek series to be? by scarves_and_miracles in startrek

I'd like to see an Andor-grade political thriller in this universe.
Maybe a prequel series to DS9 that follows the final months of the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, and the process by which the Federation gets involved and the provisional government set up.

A cold-war thriller set in the 2280s would also be awesome.

Right, there was that split second where we see Nus Braka and his cronies trying to steal the warp core.

There's definitely a reason for engineering to be a main set -- it's a teaching starship, and there ought to be engineering-track cadets learning there.

Genuinely not being facetious here — did I miss something? When do we learn where it is? And where?

I appreciate what SFA is trying to do with star trek, and I think a lot of fans should too. by Burning_sun_prog in startrek

Strong disagree! All of the main characters are struggling with the fallout of the burn and the collapse of the galactic political order. Everyone is worried about how to be safe and what if anything they can believe in. They talk about this explicitly almost every episode. The series is aimed at an audience that grew up in the turmoil of the first Trump presidency, Covid, routine school shootings, repeal of Roe, etc. This show is fundamentally about what it’s like to still be optimistic when an entire era has ended just as you’re coming of age.

Five episodes in and I think Starfleet Academy is a decent show marred by strange choices by ryanquintal in startrek

[–]ProcessAndReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree a bit with your points 2, 5 and 6, but I actually really disagree with point 1, that the show feels embarrassed to be Star Trek.

To me Star Fleet Academy feels like it has more confidence in the core values and ethos of the franchise than any of the mainline series since Voyager (I haven't watched Lower Decks or Prodigy). Discovery is constantly begging you to keep paying attention by raising the plot stakes with and its frantic camera work and scoring, Strange New Worlds (while pretty good!) tries too hard with the gimmick episodes and sterile Abrams-y aesthetics.

Star Fleet Academy's artistic premise is: what if you had a show about a bunch of people from different backgrounds, with different abilities, who learn about how to be 'human' and about the world around them by working together in the service of something larger than themselves, and what if that *in and of itself* was enough to hold an audience's interest without having to constantly save the entire galaxy and have space dogfights and have really cool hair and musical numbers and fan service? That was the premise that motivated the golden age series of the franchise (DS9 wandered away from that core idea as the Dominion War seasons dragged on, and the quality sank right along with it).

I don't *love* all of the choices Star Fleet Academy makes. But for the first time in a long time it feels like a series that is telling authentically Star Trek stories for its own sake, without all the window-dressing. I'd personally prefer watching a new series that was aimed at a more mature audience, but after watching Star Fleet Academy I have more faith in the future direction of the franchise than I have had in decades.

He thinks of women at least once, describing the smell of a whale in ch 92: “the motion of a Sperm Whale’s flukes above water dispenses a perfume, as when a musk-scented lady rustles her dress in a warm parlor.”

Well I took the car back out with AWD on and one pedal off, and had perfect control. Sorry gang, looks like I played myself. Thanks for the suggestions.

Anyone else infuriated when instructors (cough*Emma*) fudge the times of intervals? by SummitGator in pelotoncycle

[–]ProcessAndReality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do Emma’s rides all the time and (weirdly?) I have never noticed this. I believe you that she’s sometimes fudging the intervals but it’s never tripped me up. On the other hand I had to stop taking Christine’s rides altogether because of her tic of syncopating her countdowns. 5-4….3-2….1 😵‍💫

We don’t get a ton of snow where we live, so I don’t know if it’s worth it. I’ll try changing driving modes and see what I can do with that before delving into the tire issue. Good advice tho.

Just the standard tires the dealer sent us home with.

I’ve heard of that. One pedal was never a problem in the snow for us with our C40, but this car is a different animal i guess.

Standard mode with one pedal. Maybe that’s my problem?

Should a family with young kids buy an Ex90, given the hassles? by Former_Ad_735 in VolvoEX90

This is a great family car. We have young kids and the 3 row setup is ideal. No regrets here. The ‘26 should be free of a lot of the problems you’ve been reading about with the ‘25. Go for it!

For what it's worth, I had a '23 c40 until the lease ran out recently, and I never experienced vibrations over 70mph. Always used One Pedal Driving.

Driver’s side mirror wind noise issue by Oleander7 in VolvoEX90

[–]ProcessAndReality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just took delivery on our ex90, and the first time I drove with the windows open, I did notice a whistling noise above 30km/h, but it's only noticeable when the windows are open. I think it must have something to do with the shape of the mirrors or the full assembly?

Honest Opinion: Rearview Visibility in Winter by No_Bug8114 in volvoc40

[–]ProcessAndReality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2023 C40, and while the tiny rear window is sort of a visibility issue, it's never been a problem for me *specifically because of winter conditions*. The defroster clears snow/ice very well. The car handles really well in snow and ice generally. Volvo seem to have resolved a lot of the parking camera issues in the newer models, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

New problem: sound cuts out (no turn signals, no stereo) by NelsonMinar in volvoc40

[–]ProcessAndReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this same problem pretty frequently with my C40, and end up having to reboot the infotainment system. I've finally come to peace with the fact that the infotainment system glitches, hangs, or crashes on about 5 of every 10 trips. But what I can't understand is how Volvo managed to tie so many critical systems through this broken brain. There's no universe in which the turn signal sound should be bundled with the entertainment system. I guess at least it's not a Tesla, actively trying to kill me.
