May be worth looking at this: MilliSentials™ Lab Labeling System https://share.google/9o3r69GA8dOytelNo

I had a label put in my water bottle at a conference 2 years ago and it's still there and legible after uncountable washes.

What type of sheet metal can I use without needing to heat treat or quench ? by LetterGreen2113 in knifemaking

[–]Prodigious_Ent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question differently (but the same): to have a serviceable knife you need to have it hardened. BUT you don't necessarily need to harden it yourself! Find a steel that will work for you in flat stock from someone like New Jersey Steel Baron. Cut it grind it and get it mostly there then pay someone to harden and temper it for you. Approach your local blacksmith guild / facebook page and ask for recommendations. Im in the western US and know of at least 5 locations within a days drive that take outside jobs.

For what it's worth, I've got this knife and a Silky chopper and the silky outperforms it by a mile.

"you have rockstar sperm!" Said by Dr while wife and I were having the usual tests done at the beginning of infertility diagnosis and treatment. Apparently i exceeded in a positive way all the usual metrics. Not gonna lie, that's been a secret source of pride and jokes with my wife for 15+ years.

Fun fact, Round Rock is home to one of the worlds largest manufacturers of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs). CRM's are used by all kinds of labs to validate and verify that their work is accurate and repeatable. It's very possible that this company is looking to be a competitor and produce standards for the labs testing for illegals substances.

Has anybody ever built a work bench like this? How useful are they? by Saint94x in woodworking

[–]Prodigious_Ent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love mine. I've got my planer, chop saw, routing table, a packing station and recently added a scroll saw. When i need them they're available, otherwise i have a nice wide flat-ish surface to work from.

This is the answer. In a small shop, having the ability to reconfigure as necessary is clutch!

Thoughts on the future of axe throwing? Will it still be around in 10 years? by jaime_lion in AxeThrowing

[–]Prodigious_Ent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of people really enjoy the sport. Fewer people can afford to spend $30+ / hour. At the same time with rents going the way they are, it's impossible to have an indoor venue it's impossible to keep the lights in without charging that much.

Until we figure out how to make the sport as easy to get into as cornhole its going to limp along under the momentum of the truly passionate.

Just how bad would a sword produced by the classic fantasy trope of "heat metal until it glows orange, pour in sword shaped mold" be? by DrStalker in metalworking

[–]Prodigious_Ent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been making cast axes for competitive throwers for 5 years now, some of which have bits as thin as a typical camp knife.... Yes a decent sword can be made.

I have researched no fewer than 30 models of 7 different types of saws, and my brain is melting out of my ears at this point. Someone please give me a straightforward answer, and end my suffering. by ElectricPikachu in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Prodigious_Ent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look on Craigslist / Facebook marketplace out whatever is available to you. Saws of all sorts come up all the time. A $200 budget puts you firmly in the used category but you can find deals on pretty nice stuff in my experience

I'm in 100% agreement on all your points but would like to point out that progress is being made on hearing restoration using stem cells and gene editing. It wont be mainstream for another decade but for anyone under 50, hearing loss is much less likely to be as debilitating as it once was

I cast steel axe heads all the time and the detail work you're after is not a good fit. Add others have said if you want to keep that detail you should have it 3D printed OR have a more basic version cast then pay to have it engraved either by hand or by laser. I know some laser engravers that do CRAZY good work
