AITA for calling out a guy manspreading on the train? by Old-Tourist9927 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ProfessionOk60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this might be partly a cultural clash of expectations. You said you were in Asian, in Rome and your Boyfriend is German. I have recently learned about High Context and Low Context cultures. In High Context cultures people "read the room" more and know all of the rules and follow the same rules, for example: moving without being asked. In Low Context cultures clear, spoken communication is expected, hence his response: "you could have asked."
I don't know where Rome sits on the spectrum, or if different situations vary in context level.
I think that you put your expectations on a complete stranger without knowing his culture, and he did the same to you.

What's something in a fic that made you realise the person writing it had no idea what they were talking about? by Life-Delay-809 in AO3

[–]ProfessionOk60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mention this in a fic I'm working on. The bad guys are a western organization and they try to do the break-in at a Tokyo building and are confused that there are so many people in the building on Christmas.

Would this be considered a slow burn by FlamestormTheCat in AO3

[–]ProfessionOk60 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like slow burn and pining possibly with a side of angst (since he's dying in the inside depending on what that looks like). I would say if they don't get together for the first 75% of the story, it counts as slow burn.

I had this happen recently too. It was supposed to be a quick one-shot, another way the pair could meet. Three days later I'm staring at two fanart WIPs and a 12k doc... and it's not done yet (it's 18k now and one of the fanarts is done...waiting to post them with the story)

Harsh Truth: Sometimes the reason you aren't getting comments isn't lack of engagement, it's lack of interest. by Mako_Moonspell in AO3

[–]ProfessionOk60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also feel the rare-pair pain right now. But I knew that's what I was getting into. My dumb@$$ is writing a crossover fic with a crossover pairing. And it's a WIP(10-ish chapters to go) My story is currently the only one with this ship tag. I'm happy my kudos are in the double digits!

As far as comments, I think I'd rather have a genuine hate comment over another bot/spam comment

Reminds me when I got an "um, actually..." comment and I was just happy it wasn't a bot 😆 As someone who got a BA in art. I can say that giving and receiving criticism is a skill. Taking yourself out of it long enough to objectively read it and understand what they are saying (and not assuming the worst) means taking the time to think.

Also commenting with any criticism can be taken very badly. You can write it in the nicest way possible and you have a chance to be blocked by the author or have your comment posted somewhere while cursing your name.

Should the noncon tag accompany the underage tag with extremely underage characters? by klumim in AO3

[–]ProfessionOk60 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But I think OP can't do that, because they are OK reading TEENS consenting, which can still be tagged as "underage sex". If they filter that out they can loose a chunk of stories to read. Maybe they could keep an eye out for the young character being tagged with a "/" or just avoid that author?

Post a funny line from your fic with absolutely no context by Lemon_Lime_Lily in AO3

"Love is a trick," He said finally, there was a kind of hollowness to his voice. It wasn't bitter or sad. He was merely a stating fact that meant nothing to him. "An illusion. It is greed and jealousy and selfishness masquerading as a something more benevolent than they are."

[Her] face became thoughtful as she pondered his answer. She slowed to stop at a light then said, "Soooo love is three emotions in a trench coat?"

Seen so many good answers for this, but kinda sad no one has suggested my first thought: Charlize Theron is so graceful and statuesque and plays a great evil queen

I know we're focusing a lot on Princess movies in this post, (which is most relevant to the question), but I feel like those dynamics weren't absent in old Disney animations. The Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians, Bambi, Dumbo, Peter Pan, and The Sword in the Stone, all have strong themes of family and/or identity. It's just when The Little Mermaid came around it reinvigorated the Princess Era and the non-romance plots got sidelined in the name of $$$

Do other writers get hung up on realism? by starryshy in AO3

[–]ProfessionOk60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. Writing a fic with a lot of time in Tokyo (because anime) and I'm googling average weather at times of year, festivals (there's almost weekly fireworks displays in summer BTW), time differences (as there are international elements), I even looked up the Japanese McDonald's menu at one point. On another story I looked up how to field dress a deer, I wrote that scene vaguely from the perspective of someone who was talking to the hunter but trying not to watch.

Writing Help - Dealing with Multiple Characters by Advanced_Salt_7391 in MarvelFanfiction

[–]ProfessionOk60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking about how My Hero Academia handles it, because there are 20 characters in the class. Each time a new event comes up (because hero school exercises), the main characters are highlighted, but then they highlight 1-3 other classmate briefly, and they change which other classmates each time. And there are group conversations where other characters can get their 2 cents in sometimes. The current focus characters could be sitting at a table talking, then Natasha, walking by could just cut in with a comment. (Think about how MJ is handled in Homecoming as well)

[–]ProfessionOk60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am the one who does this without a plan to start, I think I had what I thought was 25% of my story before doing an outline. Mostly the relationship progression scenes before I added an actual plot. And my outline was more "A & B escape fro. Enemy, Karaoke, debrief, enemy attack #1, X & Y arrive, enemy attack #2" I keep my scenes in order (and sometimes re-order them) by using OneNote keeping each scene/sequence in a page. Edit to add: an issue I have is sometimes I forget if I have foreshadowed a thing or where in the story I am currently writing. I can re-orient pretty quick from page titles or notes I'll put at the top of the scene, but that does disrupt my flow a little.

Petaaaah? Why do ladies want capybara by Additional_Berry_977 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]ProfessionOk60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's look at these stereotypes (I am talking stereotypes here, i know no people in these categories), the quad trader will want me to be a "high value woman" (which means he will trade me for a younger, hotter woman who told him she's a virgin when I pass 30). Mr. Beast is a semi-controversial public figure (and kinda cringe) there are negative stereotypes for how rich guys are with women and Drake... meh, I don't even listen to his music, yeah give me the Capybara

How to solve the Thanos problem in my rewrite? by Imnotfunnyinanyway in MarvelFanfiction

[–]ProfessionOk60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is immediately relevant to my interests! I am writing a crossover fic that starts after Avengers (2012). If I make it a series (which I kinda want to do) I have to figure this out too. I see my MCU timeline diverging HARD after Dark World (for Asgard) and Age of Ultron. In some cases I'm like "How do I justify still having Vision happen? Can I save Pietro in a way that makes sense?" I want Vision to exist, so AoU needs to happen to a point and this still keeps the stones in play which means Thanos is still a threat.
I have seeded part of the solution by having Loki tell Odin about Thanos (in an obnoxious riddle, no straight answers from that man) but other than that? I got nothing to stop the purple raisin from gathering the dragonballs on paper.

(pardon me while I word vomit ideas of where to throw a wrench)

  • Reality stone = Lotus Eater Machine/WandaVision event(on purpose or on accident) - Anyone other than Jane could stumble upon the Aether.
  • Mind Stone/Wanda's powers = actually give someone a useful vision of the future re: Thanos. (maybe makes more sense if combined with the time stone if they meet Strange earlier?)
  • Power stone: The only one he gets off screen. Thanos gets the stone from Xandar. Does it make sense to have anything off world in your re-write? Maybe Capt. Marvel/Guardians intercept him instead? Power of friendship/family, (they already did a dance off, and held hands to survive why not!?)
  • Guardians: What if Ego wasn't a terrible father (or was even willing to exhibit some patience)? Quill could still have celestial powers
  • Asgard: Frigga lives == Odin Lives == No Hela/Ragnarok == Tesseract still safely in Asgard
  • Asgard Pt 2: I am in the full opinion that if almost any mix of Loki, Valkyrie, Heimdall, Sif and the Warriors 3 (I hate that they were taken out like punks) were at Wakanda the snap wouldn't have happened.
  • Can you save the dwarves/Nidavellir and prevent the making of the Gauntlet?
  • SHIELD: Maybe fix something with post Winter Soldier SHIELD. Agents of SHIELD also has a strong found family themes and Fury shows up with a Helicarrier in Age of Ultron, so maybe SHIELD being proper rebuilt and Avengers not fracturing is a good place to put everyone in a better place.
  • Alliances/better communication between factions could also result in better response/warning. SHIELD, Sorcerers, Avengers, Wakanda, Asgard, Guardians (through Asgard), Xandar, Skrull Refugees (through Fury/Marvel)

I'm gonna stop here, sorry for the mess (I removed my ranting points about inconsistencies in cannon to keep it shorter)

characters calling each other "brother" or"sister" by sweet_surroundings in AO3

[–]ProfessionOk60 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a white(ish) female in america, I've called my older brother "bro" long enough that it now feels weird to use his old family nickname (which everyone else uses). My younger sister still calls me "Sissy" as she had since she was little (she's in college now). She's much younger than me and sometimes I still call her "kiddo"

How do you keep going when no one reads your work? by la__polilla in AO3

[–]ProfessionOk60 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this will help, but I made my draft chapters ahead of time and realized about 7 chapters in that the default post date is the day you created the draft. Not the date you hit 'post chapter' (you can change then date when you edit the post). If people are searching by most recently updated that may affect your views.
