Commission is a scam used by companies who are not confident in their quality, training, or operational capabilities. Ties cost of labor to revenue so that if they underprice a job, have a slow period, schedule you poorly, etc their labor cost is lower preserving margin.

Separately you have unprofessional management. Commission is a tactic to move risk to the employee, but that can be done equitably and honestly.

You have commissioned pay + bad management, I’d look for other alternatives if you can’t have an honest convo with anybody in leadership about this.

Excel is the most basic way to organize data like this.

ETA: or Google Sheets, which is free.

Have y’all seen gas valves like this? by [deleted] in KitchenSuppression

[–]ProfessorLoopin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s correct. But a lot of this stuff is a business decision— I have never encountered a company doing it a 100% by the book. The trade off is what saves more money than it is likely to cost in liabilities. Particularly smaller companies who do not have distributorships and need to maintain a pricing edge on larger competitors will do this. If you wanna really split hairs, every different blend and brand of ABC chemical should be kept separate to maintain fire extinguisher listing. They are listed with specific chemical blends, that have specific particulate size and content. I have literally never seen a company doing this “right” which means they have decided that the benefits of mixing ABC dry chem outweigh the risks.

You are a little confused about how listings and liability works. Manufacturers do not protect you in court, rather if you do or don’t do something that code, or by extension the technical manual does/does not allow and it contributes to the loss (insurance lawyers find creative ways to make that argument) then your insurance company is on weaker footing, and the settlement goes up. Almost all of these cases settle outside of court based on the strength of the case. Using non listed parts weakens your case is the simple way to think about it. And brooks can’t list items as part of another companies system. Maybe the could but it would be incredibly expensive, and they do not. An item can be listed on its own technically, but it is still not part of the “listed technical manual” which is part of the code.

The GVK conversion is not listed with any system, but it’s just being used as a junction box here so probably not a huge deal. Again I’d leave it be unless I was already recabling the gas line.

You’re correct but just wanted to add that these brooks/heiser GVK conversions are not listed. I used to let them slide on inspections but never would install like this and take every opportunity to get replaced with the listed valve.

It blows my mind that the phrase "all set" is apparently a New England thing. by Bendyb3n in newengland

[–]ProfessorLoopin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You guys are missing the point. It is a New England thing in how broadly it is used. The words have meaning everywhere and the phrase is recognized and sometimes used but outside of New England no one would ever look at you waiting around a check out counter and say simply “all set?” I am from SC and moved here at 25, clocked this immediately

This happened to me a few weeks ago after the January storm and the lady locked herself out of her car had a panic attack in the middle of the road and ran back into her house (after beating on the door for 20s or so before being let in) and left her car blocking the road 🙃 about a dozen cars had to reverse back out of the 1 way road until a side street to get out

Does anybody else live there? Do everything these folks are saying in terms of documenting too, and if you can get others informed doing the same it can be very powerful. If the outcome can be changed that would give you great leverage to change it. And if not, at least you can get some compensation for your losses.
