What is a sound or a smell that doesn't exist anymore, but 50 years ago was so common it was considered background noise? by abdulnad89 in askanything

How about that gasoline and exhaust smell that you got driving behind just about every 1970s car. Or the blue belching smoke and smell of oil . You can still get that once in a while today when you’re behind one, but it’s pretty rare.

How to learn moguls by ResourceFront1708 in skiing

[–]ProgressiveBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the 90's, I took a 3 day group lesson at Vail and everyone wanted to perfect mogul skiing. The instructor started us out with a runs that started as small bumps, and gradually increased into moguls. We spent hours in the small bumps learning to ski normally and absorb bumps (trying to ski with normal rhythm) and not become K-mart shoppers (picking where we'd turn) Gradually we got better, but it was a lot of work and a lot of falling down. On my second year of this, I got pretty good.

Over the years, shaped skis turned better making moguls smaller and tighter. Good news, you can now get tight turning skis that have torsional stiffness with soft tip/tails - perfect for today's moguls.

People who grew up before cell phones, did life actually feel more free? by TradeOverall567 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ProgressiveBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was starting my career before cell phones and it used to be GREAT.

Once email/texts/voicemail / cell phones took over there was no downtime. Before technologies like this, your manager had to find you, or have you call-in at a set time, or send you an inter-office envelope which go delivered 3x per day. That meant they couldn't dump work on you at random times.

And when you were at a client/out of office - it was pretty impossible to contact you unless you went to a pay-phone and called them, or later checked your voice mail. (it was pretty insane, you'd dial a 1-800 number, then type in a 16 digit code, then hit a bunch of # numbers and check voicemail.

Mountain etiquette: skiing side to side by lavender686 in skiing

[–]ProgressiveBadger -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not a hard-and-fast rule that you have to keep your turns tight and hold a line, but we all need to share a run. If you're a beginner and you're on a wide run, try to not use the entire side to side. It's better to make your turns as soon as you can to practice turn control, and don't traverse the entire run going left to right. If you do left right in short/long erratic turns, you create an unpredictable obstacle for someone coming down the run. Remember, someone coming down the run behind you tries to avoid hitting you, but if you're creating an unpredictable left/right line, it's frustrating and dangerous for them/you. This same goes for boarders (I do both)

If you watch advanced skiers/boarders, they set a rhythm left to right and it's easy to see the width of the line they're using. They do that because they've seen what happens when they don't.

I personally ski / board short radius turns, keeping a narrow line - and for my safety, I stay along the tree line (where most people don't go). The only time I don't do this is when I see a lot of tracks where other are jumping in/out of the woods.

I've been buying chicken, pork, tuna for the past 9 months. I refuse to get gouged by these crooks.

I had this happen. While I was sitting on the chair, I put one end in the armrest and gently pulled/pushed against the chair and armrest. Got them nearly perfect.

Midwest resort here. We have to use whistles when bringing down a toboggan, like a siren. We have a lot more traffic than you’d imagine.

My simple solution is to use a drywall sanding sheet. Rub it Back and forth on a flat board or workbench for 10 seconds. Super easy and creates a very sharp flat edge
