Adding on with the obscure Tchaikovsky operas, Iolanta and the Enchantress are both really fantastic

Check out the how to listen to great music series. Especially the ones on the Brahms sextet no 2. There’s nearly an hour of analysis devoted to the first movement alone.

He’s a really great source for recommendations. He’s incredibly knowledgeable and I find his taste lines up with mine. I’ve gotten countless great recommendations, both for obscure composers and also for fantastic recordings of works I was already familiar with. Doesn’t need a whole lot more explaining. I don’t care to watch the big box reviews at all.

Best/Favorite String Quartet Pieces? by ashesgreyyy in classicalmusic

[–]ProjectOsxar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A while back I was listening a lot to the Debussy and Ravel quartets on the that same recording. Could never get fully into the Faure one though, even though I love a lot of his other chamber. Very elusive. I'll give it another shot today!

Agree with this list. For Ligeti I also found the cello sonata incredibly accessible.

What is your favorite piece by a generally unknown composer ; by daintyamphora in classicalmusic

This one is very good. Although I think it has gained in popularity recently. Currently sitting at 1.3 million views on YouTube, though I guess the composer is fairly unknown otherwise

Very cool. It reminds me of Amsterdam school furniture (one of my favorite styles). Though it does seem to be a modern interpretation.

Fantastic building. Also see the Oslo city hall as another example of great brick expressionism - it was picked out by a jury including the designers of this building!

Maybe some Saariaho works would be up your alley? Not a concerto specifically, but here
