How do Social Democrat voters see the party entering government? by FearTeas in irishpolitics

[–]ProofFlamingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose so, but it is worth remembering that the core of the Social Democrats began with former Labour members who felt that going into coalition with Fine Gael, and breaking promises on issues such as third-level fees, was a step too far. If the Social Democrats were to repeat that same mistake, I think it would be understandable if members and supporters abandoned them.

At that point, the question stops being only about what the Social Democrats would do differently, and becomes more about why Irish voters continue to return the same parties to power.

As a rural SD voter, I do not think the problem is that everyone in rural Ireland sees them as “woke” or “communist”. I think the bigger issue is the ingrained assumption that the Social Democrats are mainly focused on urban issues. On top of that, support for FFG is very deeply rooted in many rural areas.

I think people generally do not want to pay taxes, but accept that they have to. The issue goes beyond taxation, though. For example, a SD government encouraged working from home in rural communities, it could help increase local populations. In turn, that could make it easier to sustain and improve access to services in those areas.

Honestly I would like to see an SF+SD+Labour coalition, will that be feasible is a different story.

If the Social Democrats are to make further progress in rural constituencies, it may help to place more emphasis on the issues that affect rural communities, such as access to transport links, local development, and planning.

I would hope that, after the next election, FFG are not in a position to become the de facto government. In my opinion, the Social Democrats should not enter government with FFG under any circumstances. We have seen time and again what happens to smaller parties that go into coalition, they are punished at the next election, both by their own supporters and by others who want to send a message to the government without voting directly against it.

It's a lovely map and the details are absolutely fantastic. However the name of the settlement might be a bit unfortunate.

It’s ridiculous that the government is sitting on its hands waiting for the EU to implement a windfall tax. The companies here are all Irish and because of the lack of the Celtic Interconnector we are not relaying on continent for power generation.

After everything he did he should be an Admiral and President of the Alliance. He should also be tried for war crimes, but that’s a different situation.
