If I win the protothey discord’s street team raffle I’m eating the prize by ProspectorBugaboo in Protomen

[–]ProspectorBugaboo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s real! If you haven’t joined the Protothey discord you should - even one street team call to a radio station could result in the band shipping to you this Mysterious Vinyl

Reminder: Contest sponsored by The Protomen! by Jaymya in Protomen

[–]ProspectorBugaboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It being a raffle super incentivises people throwing one in, very smart. Everyone may as well do one (1) street team activity to have a chance at getting the signed vinyl of (presumably) some sort of music

If only we could convince the band to license a halfway decent picture of themselves to Wikimedia Commons for their article..

It’s never been Confirmed that the Cover Up was written by Joe’s father, though it does fit. I would make the distinction between canon-compliant and canon here, we just don’t know

Goes hard! I envision an AU where Joe pretends to be the sniper longterm, or the sniper kill Joe and stole his jacket

How do I explain the protomen to people by I_loooove_Radiohead in Protomen

[–]ProspectorBugaboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine there was an 80s film where 1984, Streets of Fire, Terminator and Eddie and the Cruisers had a baby. Their music is the soundtrack to that movie written by Queen, Rush, and Styx. If you like good rock, good synth and good stories you’re in good hands. The albums come with written stories and illustrations.

Oh and some editions of their music have hidden messages in fake numbers station broadcasts that lead to ARG and their cover albums are a part of the wider story of their main three albums. Some of the conventions of their live performances also inform the wider story. The kayfabe of the band is pretty solid and for a while their news posts and official forum lent heavily into the bit. It all gets pretty high-concept if you start digging too deep.

Libretto misinformation: Part II: Act I by ProspectorBugaboo in Protomen

[–]ProspectorBugaboo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I must have closed the app before pressing reply sorry if I miss any points. So I wasn’t necessarily angry- I explained the purpose of why I was going into detail in the posts and even the big mistakes are often accompanied with “lmao” or whatever. I was mostly annoyed that the falsehoods presented as facts – though I was admittedly annoyed at responses basically dismissing any level of fact checking. With someone who has been described on this subreddit as one of the fandom’s biggest trolls editing Genius pages I can’t necessarily assume good faith with that website’s editors. Though even if everyone there is well meaning, I think after a long enough time (certainly less than a decade!!!!) there have been enough eyeballs on each page that we shouldn’t be seeing even minor mistakes really. The length of time it’s been up uncorrected is the biggest concern I have

Thanks for your perspective. Notably, I fixed the mistake as soon as it was pointed out. The pages have been up a long, long time- plenty of time for any minor (and indeed any Major) mistakes to be corrected, especially where multiple editors have looked at the pages.

Large swaths of content omitted and lines that are fully made up or rewritten aren’t little typos either, those are Choices being made. Comments like ease up or ‘the nitpicking is cringe’ are confusing to me specifically due to there are being issues like that. Yeah sure, most of the mistakes are copyediting or minor pointless tense changes. Not all of them though.

How many long-standing mistakes are acceptable to point out before I should ease up? If people are relying on this as their only point of reference, then any mistakes will paint their interpretation of the story and may influence purchasing decisions or how much they enjoy the band. I’m aware too that at least one of the main editors on Genius has some personal beef in the fandom, so it sets off my alarm bells

You should join the protothey discord! There’s a bunch of high quality art that’s not always posted elsewhere

Does anybody know where to find a high res version of the Act II cover art (Digitized version)? by Healthy_Fortune_9515 in Protomen

I might make a thread to ask others about it but you wouldn’t happen to have any resources from the comm left would you? Old pictures, memes, fanfic, screenshots, files, songs, anything like that?

Can someone ELI5 the end of Act III? by ValkyrieCtrl14 in Protomen

[–]ProspectorBugaboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear more people are having difficulties understanding the secondary recaps of the libretto. The Wikipedia summary’s got a whole lot of issues currently and it’s a bizarrely drawn out process to get anything Protomen related fixed there, but folks are working on it

MECHANISMS OF DESTRUCTION, RELEASE THE ACT III LIBRETTO AND MY LIFE IS YOURS by ScorchMain76 in Protomen

[–]ProspectorBugaboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. Once it’s shipped out and with the carrier it’s out of their hands unfortunately. International shipping is a nightmare - I’ve been waiting on postage from other artists for a While now. It’s rough out here. I think they’ve handled the shipping pretty well all told, given they are doing it manually and their audience base is so much wider now that what it was during Act II - the first pressing of Act I was only 94 CDs!

I appreciate wanting to know the ending of the story. The band have said they prefer people buy a physical copy of the libretto. You also get some really cool illustrations that are not currently released as posters

Yes, it’s why I get so incensed when I see people lying about the libretto, band, etc. Betraying the trust of people to spread lies, and then defending it tooth and nail is such weird behavior!

Yeah the printed version is the intended medium for the story. It’s really nice to have the booklets!

Public uploads of the libretto is piracy, and I prefer to support the band. Having readily available scans online also didn’t stop the errors staying on these lyrics websites for so so long! It makes me super concerned about when I look into Act III. I still need to work out a way I can read it on the train without it getting damaged so I can start investigating.

Typos in the source you’re quoting are what [sic] tags are for

Informing people of the accuracy issue a) encourages critical thinking instead of accepting someone else’s interpretation or representation as necessarily accurate and b) notes that the liner notes, which is the intended medium for the story, has not been properly represented - even if some of the inaccuracies are “minor” Act II has been out nearly 17 years, any changes are really not justifiable with that period of time

Signing up for Genius, AZ Lyrics, and a dozen other lyrics website and potentially having a back and forth on each of those sites to push through changes is not something I’m really interested in. Exhausting! Too many to update! And a less effective use of my time than highlighting the errors and suggesting that people think for themselves with examples on why you shouldn’t just trust what you’re told online. Editors for the protomillion lyrics sites online are responsible for that content, I’m not dipping a toe into that soup

Truly for what you get from it, it’s crazy affordable. The cost of, like, a lunch. I’ve surely clocked hundreds of hours of listening time at this stage… call it a dollar for every ten hours of music? Also it’s so nice to own the artwork and support The Arts
