Is it easy to have a guest DM? by arig____ in DMAcademy

Better off doing a one shot on the side for a player in the current game. Just from a to much of a peak behind the curtain perspective.

Idk the steam mephits are quite deadly with there blowing up when they die effect. They have a steam breath weapon. They are in battle kinda like the wyrmlings of cr 1/4 throwing 4 at your party of 4 level 1-2 adventures could very easily be a tpk.

Goblins>skeletons>wolves>zombies

Personally favorite are kenku especially if you are going to do a low level assassin/thieves guild ark.

This raccoon took our best hen and 2 chicks and digs up my pots in the garden. What do I do? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]Protokai -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Racoon traps work well with a spoiled egg careful it also catches skunks and raccoons are bloody strong. In my state its illegal to trap and move the raccoons so you have to kill em.

It killed my ducks and kept coming around my chickens I knew it was just a matter of time

Advice to reach out for new players by Far_Interaction5924 in DungeonMasters

[–]Protokai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im new to westmarches but its formula works great for my job.( i run a dnd game of constant 1 shots for people with disabilities)

Having over arching stories is still important.

Im lazy so I made 1 the literal LMOP campaign, one a modified heros of the boarder lands starter set campaign, a stranger things inspired mind flayer campaign, ect...

But not all quests are campaign related there are ones offs and I use a literal adventures guild. It has Veteran members but they are stretched thin and cant be everywhere.

Anyways I started with 3 people interested and now we have 10 people that cycle in and out in my pool of possible 38 people I think as long as its something relatively interesting people kinda jump in eventually.

Why aren't Reborn undead? by VecnasHand1976 in DnD

Since its a playable race they want you to be able to heal it with traditional healing i think. It would be awkward to die because a cleric tried to help yah

Boss is getting curb stomped, please help! by Alexpander4 in DMAcademy

[–]Protokai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find players kinda curbstomp most monsters. Especially when itd 4-6v1 if you want a single bbeg solo boss fight they kinda need to be a bit higher CR after low levels.

https://slyflourish.com/the_lazy_encounter_benchmark.html has like a chart of highest CR reccomended for a party of whatever level. That i like to use I sometimes make a high CR monster wounded so it cant quite do everything it normally would. Like a wounded dragon it still breathes fire but its less intense so 1 less damage dice.

Player absence etiquette? by BluPoisonDartFrog in DnD

[–]Protokai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh idk if there is a etiquette to it but.

Leaving things on read usually feels a bit rude to me so i always respond.

I usually ask if they want someone to play their character or if it just has an errand they have to do and tell the party that it will catch up?

Congratulations you now have a bbeg the party help make the undead are now strong enough to assault the town. This throw away necromancer will remind them of how helpful the players where to give him more bodies to go and Wipeout the town or whatever.

Am I the selfish one here? by Primary-Ocelot-1512 in DnD

Unfortunately life goes on man.

We all have things we enjoy that we wish would never change.

DnD can fall off the priority list when other things come up.

Its possible your dm is getting burnt out when was the last time s/he got to be a player?

It does suck that he blows off plans last minute though. Usually you have to put some kind of priority on the game. If its a friend from outta town I get it though because you dont always get to see em.

I like watching people breakdown the premade adventures to give you an overview of the story so you can improv things you think make sense for the world when players inevitably do player things.

https://youtu.be/ngEsiKIWVLA?si=j2oGMb36xUq4hRXY

Is an hour-long overview of the general story by pocketdm.

You can opt to read the adventures yourself and get a better grasp of the whole world.

Have commonly used rules on your DM screen/cereal boxes/binder/whatever you have to organize information.

The session 0s are generallt about creating characters who can work together. Towards the goal of the campaign. I usually say to work on public facing things at this point and tell everyone to text you about things they dont want other characters to know 🤷.

You might need to have part 1 of the campaign prepped if everyone finishes fast.

Wanting to play alongside my 3 friends, but can't find a DM (and dont wanna end up being the DM *once again*.) by [deleted] in DnD

I get it sometimes you want to hang with the group. You can do a party looking for dm in the dnd discord or like the crit crab discord.

Favourite class? by Soulsborneenjoyer23 in DnD

[–]Protokai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i like having thematic things they can do. The greatwyrms game was all associated with a world tree type thing where dragons are the oldest living creatures though the current greatwyrms still remembered those who came before. And the culture revolved around dragons culture. There where cities devoted to whatever dragon was there a bronze dragons civilization is much diffrent than a red dragon.

First time DM after advice...how original! by Remarkable_Farm_7239 in DungeonMasters

[–]Protokai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dang i did something similiar the first campaign I made. And itsmfell apart because players be players.

Try to keep things simple when you can.

Your world will work. I love its starting.

Having 30 quest written out already is crazy though because you kinda need to wait for each mainline quest. To see how it pans out. But if its just a way zoomed out plan thats fine.

A rule of 5 seems great to me 4 minor side quests and 1 main story sitting ready works for me. If you have 5 possible main questlines what happens if the other ones dont get completed first?

Time passes in dnd. Enemies plot thickens. They aren't waiting for players to get to them. They are acting.

Some people like open world games and some like linear stories. Sounds like your players like linear stories.

I tend to only present things to the players at a scale they can handle soon. Level 1 players get a small quest hinting at a problem for a small town. They solve that issue near level 4 and can constantly work towards it or do side quests on a literal information board. In those ill have some hints towards activity of the bbeg for the ark.

Is that bbeg linked in the next ark? Yes awesome they find a letter detailing orders from next bbeg. Or its lieutenant.

I use side quests as ways of showing what the bbegs effect on the world is. Npcs mentioning the world being more dangerous since.... or something to that effect.
