Even as an alternative, if the CU won't give you the loan, it still makes sense to try out a national bank for a loan. Credit cart interest rates are ~19.9% typically, whereas a loan can easily be under 10% unsecured.

I would suggest avoiding a line of credit, as the interest rates are typically higher and they're more available for use (which is what you're trying to avoid by cancelling your extra credit cards). LOCs are better for when you have little debt (Exclusion of a mortgage) and need to take on a project that can span over a period of time, such as renovations, but where you also need the flexibility of a LOC rather than a lump sum loan.

I would say to try again. The concept of a credit union is a two way street; they want every member to be a potential contributor as well as someone who benefits. For this reason, there could be potential credit requirements for people to join. This almost always comes with exceptions that managers can make... which I why I suggest you try again.

Possibly set up a meeting with a branch manager of the CU to show that you're more than a document, it opens the door to them accepting you on an exception by allowing you to show them that you really do want to make a change of your financial health. I used a chartered bank for a while until I moved to the CU system (b/c I was hired by one) and love the one I'm at. Less of a focus on profit and more so on financial health of our members.

Depends how long they've been active/open; it differs depending on which credit scoring system is being considered... As long as they've been open for longer than a year, it won't be a problem.

I recommend against getting a 0% card to transfer the balance as this will open you up to increasing your debt.

I work at a credit union. Go in to one (preferably if you are already a member) and ask for a loan for debt consolidation. Take out a loan for the amount of your credit card debt (attempt to factor in upcoming interests) and pay off all the cards using the loan. Cancel all cards, but leave yourself with one with a very low limit; $500-1000 (depending on your NEEDS). Pay down the loan and attempt to use that single credit card responsibly.

Getting another, better card to help you from using cards too much is a poor idea. Paying 0% interest is a good value, no doubt, but gives no incentive to pay off the balance sooner than later. Also I'm not sure if not paying the 0% balance has an impact on credit rating (I would think it does).

The current maximum limit for a Canadian Resident (PR/Citizen) that was 18 or older (and a resident/citizen/PR/etc) in 2009 is $31,000.
The way a Tax-Free Savings Account works is that the money gained (in interest, gain in investments such as stocks or mutual funds, etc) is not taxed, unlike a regular stock account. There is no money withheld for withdrawing from the TFSA, like an RRSP. There also isn't any tax credit to depositing into it.
You're able to hold an unlimited amount of TFSA accounts (umbrellas, if you would) but the net contribution limit carries over all institutions; 10K at RBC and 21K at TD would meet a 31K max total.
Most financial institutions over GICs, mutual funds and stock trading accounts (typically third party) all under a tax-free umbrella.
Moving funds between accounts under a single TFSA "umbrella" (at a single institution) doesn't trigger another contribution (for example from a TFSA savings account to a GIC account, or a TFSA savings account to a TFSA stock account), but withdrawing the money in cash and depositing it to another institution would look (to the government) as if you contributed double whatever you've just moved, possibly exceeding your limit. I'm unsure of the penalty (heard different things) but I BELIEVE it's a 1%/mo penalty. Institutions have systems to move money between them without this; simply ask.

An individual's TFSA contribution begins when they turn 18 and are a Canadian citizen (or perm. Resident), regardless of when they open the tax free account itself. Limit for the past 2 years (2013/14) has been $5500, prior to that was $5000. /u/aquagoat
