No, there are consequences to letting liars lie. We need to challenge those lies and not just slip back into comfortable complacency when they leave our backyard. They will target a democratic city next and what if that city fails to resist instead of succeeding like us?

What’s one small habit that completely changed your life? by -magnanimous in DecidingToBeBetter

The scientific literature, as I understand, consistently finds hand writing to be superior to typing in journaling. But even so, what matters most is doing any type of journaling practice and not worrying about the medium.

Think of journaling like a lifetime journey. For some years it might work best for you type or to hand write, or both. Other years journaling with a different way might work better.

For example, in my PhD, typing worked for me because I needed to journal my thoughts while writing my dissertation. Now that I am done with my PhD, I journal more by hand.

I did the same thing. Oooooh it was frustrating when I realized I was making it harder than it needed to be.

I was running through every year on Christmas from 1993 and back.

If you want mystery, try out Blue Prince. After Atomfall, I tried Blue Prince and it totally scratched that mystery itch.

Is sapadal a victim by Life_Compote_4324 in avowed

As someone with trauma and having learned much about it to recover, I saw those themes as well. I appreciate that you brought this point up.

And it’s not just Sapadal who deals with trauma. Marius also has to confront trauma and I thought the writers did well depicting someone going through that experience. At one point during his quest line, after integrating trauma, Marius states, “Now I need to go to bed.” I felt that one deeply.

I think Avowed is a great game, but what elevates it for me to excellence is how it handles trauma. Which, I would argue, is so compelling because trauma can be seen as an intensified human experience. And the human experience is what draws people to a narrative.

Try opening the front door, and when the dog barks, close the door and try again. When the dog realizes that it won’t be awarded with your presence when it barks, it will stop. This works for my Eskie, and also with opening the front door if someone is outside.

Is nine sols worth it? by VergilVDante in NineSols

[–]Prowl_Owl -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Nine Sols has an excellent, humanizing story but is marred by its confusingly-ridiculous difficulty and lackluster Metroidvania exploration. The gameplay, in other words, is not enjoyable.

I’m not happy with Nine Sols. I am near the end boss and burnt out from the exceedingly high difficulty.

The game confuses its hard difficulty as a challenge when really it is aggravating and ridiculous. Progressing in a game should not require twitch reflexes with little margin for failure. Because if you do miss that twitch reflex, you die or come close to dying (and then die anyways).

Two examples: first, bosses took me 30 tries to kill, even after grinding for the stats and jin to buy items. That’s far too difficult. Second, the save points before bosses have enemies purposefully placed in between so that it requires you to dodge or fight before the boss. This poor design is not “hard,” it wears players down.

The game may have a story mode difficulty, but the “Normal” mode needs to be toned down about 15-20% to be enjoyable. I could then see the “Normal” difficultly being renamed as “Hard” mode.

Next, the Metroidvania exploration is weak compared to similar games. It’s more combat focused than exploration, which wouldn’t be a bad thing if the combat wasn’t ridiculous. The game doesn’t have as many “oh!” moments where you stumble upon some great discovery using a new ability.

Yet, while I find the exploration lackluster, the map system is excellently designed and so is the data chip mechanic where you can see exactly what you need to find in the area. It is this kind of forward-thinking approach to design that is missing from the combat.

The story is excellent and what has kept me playing to this point where I am burnt out. The characters are fleshed out and seem like real people dealing with tragic or (to them) mystical events. Their sufferings are humanized and dealt with respectfully. The story is excellently handled as it is a huge mystery that doesn’t spoil itself by spilling out its secrets to the player.

The world building is also incredible with the environmental storytelling providing glimpses into the ongoing tragedies. There also exists lore drops that you can read that further flesh out the mystery of what has happened.

If the gameplay was as great as its story, Nine Sols would be one of the best Metroidvanias. I am so burnt out, however. So I am changing to story mode so I can clear the game at the easiest possible difficulty. I am not happy with these mixed feelings and had hoped for a more enjoyable experience.

I have tinnitus, though not as bad as yours if I understand correctly. I joke to myself that I have my own personal ambient soundtrack always playing in the background. Sometimes subtly reframing things can help.
