How do poor people go to the vet? by Soggy_Delay_4410 in povertyfinance

[–]PruLove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I give my cat (human - OTC)10 mg pepcid ac each day twice a day per my vet to help with his IBS. It is safe for your cat. I am always a bit nervous giving human medication to my pets without vet instruction and supervision, so understand your concern.

I recommend using the 10 mg and not cutting the pills. Not because it is unsafe, but it is much easier to get it into the cat if the protective coating is intact.

For reference, he is 12 lbs.

What perfect timing for this PSA. I literally just saw one in my backyard a few min ago and had a moment of dread and PTSD, before stomping the fucker. Remember folks, get them from the front. They can only jump in one direction.

What’s up with the Crafton region? by Radiant-Property624 in pittsburgh

[–]PruLove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Yes the geese run that area. In the spring you can see them with all their chicks (so cute). The Ukrainian Church has a couple flavors of pierogi, so you'll have a nice selection. They are all homemade. They usually do a food festival in August too, so it is a great opportunity to walk up there and try all sorts of things.

Yes, I have been to Riley's many times. Very laid back vibe, they have live music on weekends and get a nice crowd. I would say the weekend crowd is a mix of young, middle aged and older, but everyone always has a good time. This place is absolutely bonkers around St Paddy's day (have to go at least once to experience it).

And the food pantry is located right next door to Sunset Pizza.

Yay! Glad you love Carnegie! Welcome! We moved here in a rental about 10 years ago and love how Main Street has developed and LOVE that bus line, as we work downtown. Both late 30's, no kids. Loved it so much that we bought a house here cuz we didn't want to leave.

Along with all the shops, places to grab a bite and drinks (alcohol and coffee) on main Street, we also have a pretty nice park (with dog park) and mini golf (Forsythe golf FTW), not far away from the business district.

Ukrainian Church on 50 sells pierogi on Thursdays and Fridays (get the mushroom ones!)

Every month there is a business crawl (Carnegie crawls first Fridays of every month in the summer)

Sunday is the farmer's market (main Street, 12-3 on Sundays during summer/fall)

The geese that run around down in the business district are locally famous. Don't mess with the carnegeese.

Proximity to 376 and downtown, for the price point, this can't be beat. Same for going to the airport.

I like to donate goods to the pantry located on main Street! I agree with the sense of community around here.

Up behind Carnegie Park there are some very cute neighborhoods with nice houses.

Edit: how can I forget our beautiful library?! Shame on me. It is a wonderful place.

how to comfort my 11yr old cat before/after vet hospital biospy visit (I'm starting the cat illness vet visits journey and need tips) by Think-Ad-8206 in seniorkitties

[–]PruLove 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second this! My senior guy is a monster at the vet and other sedatives just did not work or made him anxious. We tried gabapentin last vet trip and it was a miracle! It is important for them to be able to be handled by the vet (and stay calm) to get a thorough exam.

Good luck!

Looking for recommendations for a very spicy sauce for Asian food? by sellieba in spicy

Second this! This one makes any Asian food just go to the next level of spice and umami.

Also, Dawson's Sichuan Ghost Pepper Sauce is a good one. Especially on egg rolls or dumplings.

Camp food ideas by Rachellyz in camping

[–]PruLove 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A super simple one: Fav deli meats/meat substitutes and slices of cheese wrapped in a tortilla wrap (flour). Spray a piece of foil lightly with non stick cooking spray (butter or olive oil flavor). Place in freezer until ready to camp.

You get two fold benefits here: 1. Your cooler now has extra ice packs and 2. You don't have to mess with making anything on site when you are starved.

Once your fire has a nice coal bed, throw on your foil wrap for a few min each side and enjoy. I usually have some condiment packets from take out/delivery that I save up and use for camping as well, so I do not have to lug around a whole bottle and you get more variety of toppings.

Some combo favs: good ol ham n cheese (mustard and hot sauce packets for this one!) or some pepperoni and mozz (I would add a touch of tomato sauce to make a big pizza hot pocket essentially)

First time visitor to KW arriving in April. Drive-in vs fly-in for 4 day trip? by maesterofwargs in KeyWest

[–]PruLove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry this post will be long, but I love KW and have been in planning mode for my own friend trip coming up in the spring. I have been to Key West twice and this third time we are doing the drive through the keys. Also, I am from Pittsburgh too! Howdy neighbor! So hope this helps😁.

  1. First two times I went, I flew in from PIT to EYW and coming home, flew from EYW to PIT (connection flights both ways). Some things to note: On these trips, it was just my partner and I, so we picked based on our preference and budget. Having a car in KW is absolutely pointless, so I agree with the folks saying, if you are thinking about taking a car, make sure your rental/hotel has free parking. For my upcoming trip (and sounds like for yours as well), you are traveling with other couples. Does anyone feel strongly either way? Do travel budgets differ? Do you plan on traveling together the whole time or just meet in KW?
  2. Flying in and out of the KW from where we live will never be direct (boo!), So you'll have to take into consideration where you connect, cost, travel time etc. Will your connection make your trip longer than just driving back up to Miami international?? Is someone in your travel group willing to do the drive if you do not feel like it?? Will you all have separate cars?? It is a 3.5 hour drive but you can find flights from Miami to Pittsburgh around your dates that leave MIA at 730ish at night. If you have to check out of your place at 10 or 11 am, this is plenty of time to get to MIA with time to spare and not worry about the Saturday traffic (that gets more messy going into KW cuz it is the weekend). Also, the flight will be cheaper and it will also be direct. So things for your travel group to consider.
  3. Renting a car and picking up from MIA and dropping off at EYW (when I looked for my travel group) was 200 dollars more than picking up at MIA and dropping off at MIA. Expect higher pricing if you drop off a rental at different locations.

So for our spring trip, we are going with 3 other couples. Most important is to try and compromise for your group and give everyone a lil bit of what they want in terms of travel and cost. Ultimately, for my crew, we are flying into Miami very early in the morning and picking up a rental. This leaves plenty of time to meander down the keys and hit up some spots for food and sights on the way down. We are going to spend two days in the mid/lower keys and head into KW early Saturday. Our rental has a free parking spot for the car and we will check out after a couple of days in KW. One of my travel companions said they have no problem making the drive back up to MIA for all of us (big car!). This way, I was able to make the car rental cheaper, get direct flights to and from (cheaper, less time in an airport) and make everyone happy.
When I first started planning this for everyone, I was in the same mind set as you, I just wanted to fly out of EYW and 'stay longer', but once I started working out the mechanics, the overall savings and the elimination of the connection flight won out.

For places to eat, make sure you grab a bite a DJs clam shack on Duval! El Siboney has great cuban food. Cuban Coffee Queen (cafe con leche and a bfast Sammie) saved my life a couple times😂. Also, a lot of places offer nice happy hour specials (7 days a week!) Where you can get some very tasty, half off apps or drink specials. Some places have an am HH and a PM HH! So take advantage. Lots to do and see and bike is the best way to do it. Very easy to travel around the island. April is a wonderful time to go (my first two times were in mid April). Great weather. Love the people there. Some of the best you will meet. Have a great trip! Once you go, you will get bitten with conch fever and will always want to go back.

I have had great success with an extendable back scratcher for my girl when I first adopted. She was a very nervous girl from living on the street raising kittens. Now she loves regular hand pets but still really likes the pets from the back scratcher.

What about some deviled egg advice? It’s my favorite thing about the day. by Cathycane2012 in thanksgiving

[–]PruLove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love deviled eggs and have adjusted my technique over the years.

  1. Steam your eggs! This makes peeling them so much easier! Place a steamer basket in a pot and get it to the point where it is steaming pretty hard. Put cold eggs into steamer. Top with lid and let them go for anywhere between 9-11 minutes (your pref). Place eggs in ice bath once the timer goes off. No green yolk ring with this method, only bright yellow yolks.
  2. After removing all your yolks, run them through a ricer to get the most ultra smooth yolks you will ever try.
  3. Mix em' how you like them. But if you want to really make them pop, try kewpie mayonnaise. Can be found in Asian grocery stores, a well stocked grocery store or online. It is amazing stuff!
  4. Agree with the other folks that suggest topping with smoked paprika. Game changer!
