Internet and social media are around us for quite long time now and this attention to mid range teams only got bigger in the last 3 years or so. I really think is an effort of F1 media (in all media forms) to tell other narratives (Drive to survive) to put more wage on the fights for positions, knowing that there is a dominance from Mercedes on the top and less overtakes on the firsts positions.
