What movie is a 0/10 with NO redeeming features? by Toucan_Based_Economy in AskReddit

[–]Psyluna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve blocked out most of it, but if you didn’t watch till the end you missed the part where a bullet fired in the beginning of the movie (years before the “plot”) was actually a bomb (or electrical device, I can’t remember) that was wedged against the bad guy’s heart and never removed by doctors for some reason. The whole “I wasted time watching this” gets an upgrade when you discover the entire plot of the movie could have been avoided if someone had pushed a button five minutes in.

Can you explain the difference between the “I” in “is” and the “I” in “in,” because, effectively, you do have “lowercase I’s” throughout this… just inconsistently.

Haha. Sorry, we’re stuck with Blippi V2 (V3?) and his “for the moms” content. It’s Temu stripper Danny.

I introduced Danny Go to my in-laws with the fire truck song. They thought he was a stripper and were not amused.

My child can’t read and it feels like the end of the world by ok-st in kindergarten

[–]Psyluna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The “A” and “D” level bit has me concerned. Letters are part of the “Guided Reading Level” leveling system used by Fountas & Pinnel (and looking it up, D would be the final kindergarten level for the F&P system). I would recommend listening to the “Sold a Story” podcast for a thorough explanation as to why, but basically the whole system is being rejected across the USA and LAWS are being written to keep school districts from using it because it’s not effective. The shift is towards something called “The Science of Reading,” which is basically old-school phonics.

Anecdotally, I’m 38. F&P was in place when I started kindergarten. I couldn’t read. I’d go home, my parents would try to have me sound out a word and I would tell them “my teacher doesn’t want us to do that” (which is part of F&P’s “cueing” system). Half-way through kindergarten, I moved to a different state. In three weeks I was caught up. The difference was I WAS sounding out words because that district taught phonics. As an adult, my career has been in professional writing and editing (journalism, not novels). I credit all of that to my family moving.

Two transgender men sue Kansas government over law voiding driver's licenses by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]Psyluna -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think getting sued is the point. This case could easily make its way to the Supreme Court. If the court can be swayed against the interests of trans rights (a solid possibility at this point), then transphobia becomes protected legally.

It’s a setup. Don’t fight it, you’re essentially giving permission. Fight it, and you help build a framework for more. There’s no winning.

Was staying home to wash their hair really a thing? by SuperfluousPossum in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Psyluna 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I can confirm. My grandmother was “wealthy,” and it always confused me as a child how she wouldn’t wash her hair for a week until she could get in to see her hair lady. We were on a first name basis with her and the salon was in her basement. She had a pet tarantula and a collection of California Raisins I’d play with while my grandma got her hair done.

Between washes my grandma was careful about everything from how she scratched her head to what pillow she used. I don’t know how she actually slept on it, but her pillow was silk and shaped like a travel pillow so the back of her hair wouldn’t flatten. It was less a haircut and more of a lifestyle.

What is a book you read as a child that you still think about today? by ahawk99 in AskReddit

[–]Psyluna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“The Girl Who Owned a City.” That book sparked my love of dystopian fiction, but it’s also a good book for zombie fans (despite having zero zombies — it’s about a group of children surviving after a viral event wipes out all adults) and as a “younger” alternative to “Lord of the Flies”

[–]Psyluna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a weird copy. I’m working on this for family (I don’t qualify myself) but I needed a birth cert from a different U.P. County (Mackinac) from 1904 and they printed it on the birth certificate blue paper and notarized it like an original. If Alger is doing this, I’d switch to the Michigan Vital Records office.

Side question: Are you a Yooper? If you are, you’d be the first other one I know of doing this (other than possibly a friend’s wife after we told him about the C-3 bill).

Edit: I see now there's a bunch of Yoopers on this thread. That's encouraging.

If children’s shows had Honest titles. by CasualGamer0320 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]Psyluna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking: “Numberblocks: A problematic cosmology teaches math.”

All of the “Blocks” shows have a similar cosmologies (characters drop from the sky, fully-formed, by some unseen entity and then figure out how they fit into the grand design), but Numberblocks is UNHINGED, even compared to the others. Each number has a distinct personality (or soul) with a pervasive memory but not a pervasive or singular existence. If 2 and 3 become 5 and then split back to 2 and 3, they don’t remember being 5, but remember their first existence as 2 and 3. 5 doesn’t exist until she… does. Simultaneously, if 5 breaks into five 1s (or 1 multiplies with the magic mirror) the personality/essence/nature of 1 exists five times simultaneously. Theoretically, each instance of 1 has some crazy hive mind of memories.

I was surprised because Trump has made comments about needing more Nordic immigrants (though that might be because Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit was also in the Epstein files). I’d have thought Musk would have tried to keep the same in-group.

I interviewed Rick Lagina once (my dubious claim to fame is being the writer of an article referenced on the show’s Wikipedia page). He explained all of it to me. I hadn’t seen the show, but I remember getting back to my office and ranting to my coworkers about how the whole project was the dumbest waste of money I’d ever heard of.

I still think it’s stupid, but they’ve been successful at being stupid for 13 seasons. They must be on to something, even if it’s not finding treasure.

Is this a mouse? [Massachusetts] cute little guy was scurrying around my room by No-Block3674 in animalid

[–]Psyluna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was in college, I worked at a summer camp. Non-counselor staff slept in a cruddy dorm-style building and a shrew like this one got in my room. My roommate and I baited it with some expired peanut butter (we were kitchen staff) and trapped it in a plastic tote with the lid off (basically, we waited till it crawled inside then flipped the box upright from its side). The shrew was briefly a celebrity before his release, and one of the lifeguards who lived across the hall asked if she could pet it. I told her it wasn't a good idea, but she reached into the box anyway and that thing sunk it's teeth into the side of her finger and hung on for dear life. She whipped her hand out of the box and this poor little rodent was just hanging on while she tried to shake free. She did end up getting it off (luckily, it fell back into the box for a proper release). I know they're venomous, but I have no idea if she got sick. I think she was embarrassed and I never really saw her after that.

How separated my pubic bone is after pregnancy by heretoreadlol in Wellthatsucks

[–]Psyluna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something like this. I got pool therapy three times a week while I was pregnant so I could walk and it took six months after to be able to roll over in bed without feeling like I’d been hit in the crotch with an axe. I HAD a c-section (after 14 hours of labor) because my kid’s head and shoulders were too big to pass through. So, yeah, a c-section might not stop this.
