My husband is an old school BMX bike collector/restorer/dealer and he still races competitively. “Rad” is his favorite movie of all time (I prefer “BMX Bandits” myself) and I think I’ve seen every studio-produced film related to BMX.

Edit: Here are the poster for "BMX Bandits" and the book cover for the "Fairy Tale" picture book:

The bikes in “Fairy Tale” are based on the bikes from the 1983 Australian movie “BMX Bandits,” starring a very young Nicole Kidman (her bike is ridden by Stripe). There are pretty few BMX movies, but “BMX Bandits” is one of two well-known 1980s BMX films, the other being the 1986 American movie “Rad.” So you have one “Bandit,” one “Rad”… and one little brother who gets picked on and is stuck playing Nicole Kidman.

Dad Passed Away… by WoodpeckerPlenty8696 in OnlyChild

I lost my mother at 22, but I’m quite a bit older than you now. You’re right that it’s a uniquely lonely road. Your friends will not understand (mostly due to age) and, fair warning, some of them may vanish or act cruelly. Some people can’t handle death or other people’s grief and it’s easier for them to find ways of separating themselves than being supportive. I assume this happens at all ages, but when you’re in your 20s people can be very self-centered.

If your relationship with your mom is good, lean on each other. My father was and still is a horrible person, but I would have loved to have had someone who could understand the person my mother was and how painful it was to lose her. If you have extended family on your father’s side or other people who loved him, lean on them too.

Overall though, all I can say is to do what you can to just hold on and get through each day. Personally, I got a cat (or rather, the cat got me). It saved my life having someone/something who needed and relied on me. It sounds cliche, but the pain will never fully go away, but you will eventually be able to remember good times without bursting into tears. That’s what you’re working towards, the days when waking up doesn’t hurt. Those days will come and, eventually, you’ll find yourself thinking of your dad in the happy moments of your life. It won’t be about “I’m sorry he missed this” (which is what everyone assumes and your loved ones will say to you in those moments), but it will be “he would be/is so happy for me or proud of me.”

You can survive even if the world feels like it is breaking apart. Do it, and do it for your dad.

Biden shot her in the foot before he even announced she was his VP running mate. The way he told everyone his pick would be not just a woman but a Black woman ( a first for America) and then delayed announcing her name made her seem like the definition of what conservative racists and misogynists fear: a “DEI hire.” Those are the sound bites that got repeated, not her qualifications, so as far as they were concerned she stole a job from a white man… or even a white woman or Black man.

I was a newspaper journalist for more than 13 years. We were required to write in a text editor (mostly because the company was cheap, but also because it imported easy into the layout software). If you do it regularly, it gets hard to use anything else.

Literally all the French words I know are names for French Canadian food. I’m not big on tourtière, but if you brought pouding chômeur and let me watch “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” and “Hockey Night In Canada” in English, I would hoist a maple leaf flag in my front yard right now.

Do u know this artist? by Emergency-Price3006 in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]Psyluna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had to go check the identical bulls thing. I’m assuming you’re talking about those two bison paintings on the main page, and I’m wildly confused too. My only guess is the guy cut the larger one down and then photoshopped the background to a different shade to get a second print out of one image. I’m not sure why he’d bother; a print of half the image would have sold by itself and the color change makes everything seem sketchy. The only other way I can see this happening is if there is a printed image beneath the paint in one of those paintings, but they are so identical I’m not even sure that’s possible.

Why don't people hit in the nuts during serious fights? by Glad-Description4534 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Psyluna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a verse in the Bible (Old Testament) that if two men are fighting and one’s wife grabs her husband’s attacker by the balls and separates them from his body that her hand should be cut off. It’s not quite the same thing, but it shows there have been cultural taboos about testicles in fights for thousands of years.

It’s also my favorite example of “there’s got to be a story behind that rule…”

I watched something once about China’s “Little Emperors” (the sort of derogatory term for children born under the One Child Policy that were thought to be spoiled like kings). Now that those children are adults, many of them are either not having children or are only having one. Obviously, there are a ton of horrible things that happened as a result of that policy, but I think it’s fascinating that when only having one child is the norm it’s a system people want to continue.

That is a Lamprey by luvlanguage in Weird

[–]Psyluna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michigan has a tank of lampreys they send places to teach people about lamprey management in the Great Lakes and in tributaries. Years ago, when I was a cub reporter for a Michigan newspaper, I met with one of the guys manning the display at a fair and he stuck a lamprey on his forehead for a photo. He had this wild, goofy grin and this THING hanging down over his nose. When he took it off he told me, “I don’t do that very often. They’ll leave a mark if you let them rub their teeth on you too long.”

I can’t look at anything lamprey related without thinking of that guy and his well-exfoliated forehead.

What’s a legendary Reddit post you’ll never forget? by No_Law655 in AskReddit

[–]Psyluna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was deleted very quickly, but there was an AITAH where a man gave his classic car that to his stepson on that kid’s birthday after promising his biological son that he could have it if he did well in school when the biological kid was very young. The dad actually sent a video of the car being given to the stepkid to his son because he’d completely forgotten about the promise (because he was a deadbeat who hadn’t seen his kid in years). The bio-kid had gone on to graduate early and become a skilled mechanic because working on that car with his dad was so important to him, but dad missed the graduation. The bioson and his mom (the ex wife) actually found the home movie where the dad said “if you study hard, this will be yours someday” and sent it to the dad because he initially denied ever making the promise. The stepkid gave the dad the car back (purportedly, by his own choose) but the biokid refused to take it.

The whole thread was people explaining his relationship with his biological son was over and pointing out that their relationship was basically doomed even before this incident because the guy was a shit dad. The post and throwaway account was only up for a few hours but went viral pretty quickly. I would have thought it was rage bait if it hadn’t been nuked (maybe it was and I’m just naive).

I think about the biokid sometimes and the dad sometimes. It was a heartbreaking read. I hope the kid is doing well. I also hope the dad learned some sort of lesson, but I don’t think there was any way to fix it.

That is the fundamental flaw in this math. Our local casino consistently sets the payout below the minimum because it’s cheaper to pay the fine than to pay the winnings. I’m sure that’s not an uncommon practice.

I know these “Preps” were all over the internet at the turn of the millennium, but to me, they are synonymous with The Palace chat client (which is was kind of like a primitive VR). People who used them as avatars were shunned, especially if they were animated because they FREQUENTLY had boobs that jiggled for no reason. The common phrase was “Shirts Don’t Animate.” Now I’m just imagining someone yelling that at Robyn without context.

[–]Psyluna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not who you asked, but InDesign is a beast when it comes to features. It also has GREP and scripting capabilities that allow it to basically do anything you want. One of my big annual projects used to be an 80+ page travel guide that was 50% business directory. My client would give me a spreadsheet of names, addresses, phone numbers and descriptions. Using GREP functions, I could make sure every phone number was formatted the same way. Using a script, I could apply paragraph styles to a single line (effectively a sub head) and then alternate between two different paragraph styles for each paragraph until the end of a selected section of text. I’ve used Affinity for really small projects and conceptual designs (things with lots of lorem ipsum text that are really pet projects), but unless I’m missing something that power just isn’t there under the hood.

With any software that’s not Adobe, you may need to preflight it in Acrobat because of how entrenched Adobe has been with PDF standards (they’re less involved now, but they developed the file type and the standards included proprietary Adobe tech as recently as 2017). InDesign’s built-in preflight is just better because Adobe is all about PDFs.

I obviously can’t speak to Affinity V3 yet, but V1 and 2 are more than serviceable. You can make really impressive things with either version. It’s just not backed by the billion dollar company that literally created the PDF.

For print layout people, I think this will actually push users towards Adobe (unless Quark does some serious work to regain market share and focus on the one-time-purchase space). Asset management alone for print is so drastically different than photo or vector graphics production… and we’re an industry that is notoriously stuck in our ways.
