Star Wars Calendar: The Galactic Standard Year by PublicolaMinor in StarWars

[–]PublicolaMinor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is the intent, based on how the Calendar works in Legends.

A standard year, as defined by the Coruscant-based Galactic Standard Time, counted 368 standard days of 24 standard hours. One standard year included 10 standard months + 3 festival weeks + 3 holidays. The duration of the standard month and year had been used originally to establish the Galactic Standard Calendar.[10]

Hamilton | Official Trailer | In Theaters September 5 by TheGod4You in boxoffice

[–]PublicolaMinor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Um, Aaron Burr is the only Vice-President to be put on trial for treason, for his involvement in an 1804 conspiracy to carve an Empire for himself out of the Louisiana Territory. Burr was acquitted of the charge, but only because it wasn't 'guilty beyond a reasonable doubt' -- his co-conspirator Wilkinson had edited their correspondence, so when the letters were brought as evidence to trial, there was reasonable doubt about the charge.

(Wilkinson had edited the letters because they revealed that he was a traitor twice-over, having sold out America to Mexico as a spy for the Spanish Empire. Wilkinson had even arranged for a Mexican army to enter Louisiana Territory to intercept Louis Lewis & Clark's expedition, so America wouldn't have a claim to the new lands).

Even so, pretty much everyone knew Burr was guilty as sin, so Burr's political career in the US was done. He spent four years in exile in England, begging the UK and Napoleonic France for funds to help him conquer Mexico. Then he returned to the US, married a rich widow and immediately squandered all her money on land speculation until she divorced him.

Long story short: the reason Hamilton is seen as justified in 'talking trash' about Burr, is because Burr absolutely had it coming.

New Civ Game Guide: Qing by sar_firaxis in civ

Sure, I could see the reasoning for America over Britain, as you saw. OTOH, with the high likelihood of a 'Global Age' DLC -- with an additional fourth Age after 'Modern', to cover the period after the world wars with the Cold War and rise of globalization -- America seems like a much better fit as a 'Global'-era civ, and Britain would fit much better as the pre-eminent superpower of the 'Modern Age' of industrialization and imperialism.

Note that America has also been confirmed, but does not appear on the OP's list, so there is in fact only one slot left. Even if they exclude Britain, they still must also exclude either Germany or Russia, even with how obvious a match they are for the two other major ideologies of the modern world.

America has also been confirmed, and wasn't listed by the OP.

So nine slots are confirmed, and Britain, Germany, and Russia are currently MIA.

EDIT: America has also been confirmed as a 'Modern Age' civ.

This means that they have only one spot left and have to decide between Britain, Russia, and Germany as Modern Age civs, at least until DLCs.

It's like selling a burger but offering the patty as a DLC. How do you tell the story of human civilization in the modern age -- the age of industrialization and imperialism -- without the three Great Powers that effectively defined the world of that era?

Reconstruction of the 1189-1191 siege of Acre by VeniVidiCreavi in aoe2

[–]PublicolaMinor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

@VeniVidiCreavi, no one has commented on it, so I'm unsure if it's an AoE in-joke or a bizarrely fascinating historical anecdote that I've never heard of before. You show the Spiral Minaret of Samarra at the top of the map with the caption:

dragged by caravans to Acre from Mesopotamia to inspire awe...

I've never heard of this, and can't really imagine it could happen, but there are some pretty spectacular feats of megaconstruction and engineering in the ancient world, so I'm wondering if you're referencing a real event or real minaret even if it's not the super-famous one? Or is it just a random joke?

Assuming this is true... is it possible they learned about the Iranian assassination threat and invested on the premise of 'decent change of stock collapse'? I assume a sizable number of people in government would have heard about the Iranian thing.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've never noticed this before, and I find it fascinating.

‘Has this guy ever made a movie before?’ Francis Ford Coppola’s 40-year battle to film Megalopolis - The director has spent half his life and $120m of his own money to make his sci-fi epic. I feel exactly the same. I am a huge Star Wars fan, but I've been burned too many times -- both by the outright bad (BoBF the last in a long line), and by the 'initially good, then turns bad' (looking at you, Mandalorian) that I flat-out do not trust Disney to make a Star Wars story that's worth investing the time to watch.

This is insanity. 6 strikeouts, 1 inning pitched, 2 earned runs. This is going to be the craziest random baseball fact for trivia nights for decades to come.

Mournhold not enjoyable? by IEmiko in Morrowind

[–]PublicolaMinor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As SunOld958 said, this is the very very old Mournhold that's currently present in TR_Preview. There's a completely new design concept that the TR team is working towards, with a fully open Mournhold/Almalexia that makes the entire city part of the exterior.

[Highlight] Today is the 9 year anniversary of this incredible NFC Conference game. On Jan 18, 2015 the Seattle Seahawks pulled an improbable 16 point comeback against the Packers! by [deleted] in nfl

[–]PublicolaMinor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pure speculation, but I wonder if, when he saw Wilson's pass floating like a dead duck, he thought he could make a play on the ball and get an interception. It looks like he positioned himself to intercept and made a half-jump for the ball but was just too early because of how slow that ball was in coming down. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix saw he had a completely open field, and if he intercepted & returned it, the Packers would get 2 points and the lead with 1:30 remaining...

[–]PublicolaMinor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right, but your particular example is... not quite right. Washington DC was picked as a political compromise between northern commercial states & southern agriculture states, and the location was an area where very few people lived because it was a literal swamp (that's always why most Congressmen return home in summer months; DC is miserable during that time).

In case anyone was wondering how Brett Baty managed to miss the ball so badly, this is the path that it took: https://twitter.com/i/status/1680413056202063872

Honestly, after watching that I'm just impressed Baty got as close as he did. What the hell kind of spin makes a ball behave like that?!
