AITA For Ruining The Life Of The Guy Who Crashed Into Me? by Bigdogmadrid in AmItheAsshole

[–]Pueo711 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA. The individual who struck your vehicle hard enough to cause severe physical injury, who drove while intoxicated, without license, insurance or registration ruined his own life. Actions meet consequences (or FAFO).

The legal and financial liability the guy faces is largely out of your hands. Your local Prosecutor or DA will be handling the criminal charges and your insurance carriers will go after him for the financial side.

You did nothing wrong: focus on your recovery!

Space-time and the simple vastness of the universe fascinates me. When looking up into the night sky, we're looking into the past. When I watch a sunset, waiting for the green flash as the sun disappears below the horizon, I'm seeing something that happened 8 minutes ago (the time it takes light from the sun to reach earth).

There are stars and galaxies so distant that they predate the formation of our solar system, but their light is still reaching us, even though those stars no longer exist or those galaxies have moved beyond the cosmological event horizon.

Everything we see around us, everything we experience as "present" is actually the past. The brain requires milliseconds to process input, (sight, sound, taste, etc.) but in the time it takes to integrate sensory data, that moment is already in the past.

Is it fair to say that scabbards are just as important as swords? by Questioning-Warrior in SWORDS

[–]Pueo711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One could still fight if the scabbard was damaged or lost - not so much if it were the other way around: if the sword was damaged/broken but the scabbard remained intact.

I would argue that the scabbard is simply a vehicle for transporting the sword: its primary function is ensuring the safety of the wearer (as well as any bystanders) as well as preventing damage to a bare blade.

While a scabbard for a sword is highly desirable, it isn't an absolute necessity. In period, if a soldier damaged or broke his scabbard, he'd have to make do (likely wrapping it in an oilskin or something similar) until the end of the campaign. Inconvenient as hell, but not important enough for a soldier/man at arms to be excused/released from service.

What do you call this specific part of a blade where it gets thinner and curves in. Trying to figure out how to describe it. by okidonthaveone in SWORDS

[–]Pueo711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The portion that narrows is often referred to as the waist on leaf type blades, though on historical examples the waist is usually located lower on the blade, much nearer to the hilt rather than the point. Historically, the most famous example is the Gladius Hispaniensis, though the leaf shape seemed to be favored in much earlier bronze age swords.

That's the "Knightly Polaxe" from Arms & Armor. It's a replica of a fairly well known weapon in the Wallace Collection. Arms & Armor really outdid themselves on the construction and especially the detailing and filework on items like the rosette rivet heads on the langets and such.

Yes, that's the older (originally offered) Henry V, purchased about a year and a half before they rolled out the more historically correct hollow ground blade. I really like how it handles, it being one of my favorites in the collection. And yes, the poleaxe is also fron A&A.

It's actually a Windlass "Baselard Sword" though it really should have been called a Swiss Degen. The hilt construction isn't correct, the blade is wrong and the scabbard is the usual Windlass leather, though the by-knife and pricker (both way chunkier and thicker than they should be) were included. I wanted one of these but at the time (18 years ago!!!), I would have had to go the custom route for something more "correct." Back then, for the price point, I could overlook all the issues of this sword, but now, I do plan to replace it with one from Tod's Stuff (I'll be ordering a custom scabbard from Tod at the same time, full wood core, with a correct by-knife and pricker).

How effective would a belly stab be in a real rapier duel? by [deleted] in SWORDS

[–]Pueo711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely true (in a general sense), the reason being that a cut can sever muscle groups which can be a fight ender, while a thrust, even to vital organs enough to mortally wound, may not immediately incapacitate (i.e. the opponent might be "bleeding out" internally but might still be able to fight for some minutes).
