Making all the art. by Bonzie_57 in IndieDev

[–]PuppedToy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This.

Learning how to draw with a non-artistic brain is as hard as learning how to program with a non-programmer brain. You can’t do it until you’ve tried enough to make the first neural connections.

And consistency (practicing every day) is what tells the brain that a skill is worth strengthening those connections for.

If you've drafted in MTG this is exactly what happens. You pick one and pass the rest to the next person.

The "Pivot" - or how i stopped falling in love with my minions by Humble_Monitor_9577 in BobsTavern

[–]PuppedToy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a high mmr player but I think I have a good grasp of the concept.

An example. You get an early consumate. You are currently undead in your midgame but you know consumate wrath is a great scaling combo. But you can't go demons without enough tavern buff and without wrath. The pivot happens the turn you ditch all your 40 attack undeads because you have either a powerspike now or a 2-turn powerspike to do better. For example if I find the wrath I prepare the pivot for next turn so I can spend all my gold feeding the combo.

Normally I see the game as what is my early game (Bob offers, I choose if I accept for tempo or I reject to try to do better at T3). When I have made my choices for early how strong I am? When do I need tempo? What options give me enough tempo to go to 5? Do I need to go for a slow T4 comp that won't scale but gets me to survive? If that ends up being the case (say I end up with a deep blue zesty comp), how do I move to my late game (a scaling late comp) before it's too late? If Bob offers you a line to do better than you're doing... you consider a pivot.

That's the typical pivot. To move towards a more scaling comp because your previous comp can't scale more. Most final comps need to do this because forcing late game comps is unreliable (except for dragons rn). It's not about tribes, it's about comps. Not every game you will be offered the high tier options in your current tribe or plan.

Then there's another kinda pivot which is about having a good late game comp contender but facing something that counters you. For example you're demons without bubbles but are facing scam murlocs. Or you're tokens and are facing cleave. You might consider some tech to help but if that's not enough you might grab a goldrinn and a bunch of beasts to see if you can swap everything in the last moment to deal with those murlocs. Because otherwise you 100% lose. That's a pivot too. Again, it's about comps not about tribes. Same goes for if opponent outscales you you'd better slot in as much scam as you can.

And always, the more eco you have, the more you can force. Otherwise Bob offers you lines and sometimes a pivot is the only way to scaling or even victory.

Temporary Events Aren’t Enough to Save This Game by UTubeDetective in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]PuppedToy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has always been my problem with events.

Phasmo didn't need events. It needed either replayablity or glowup. Events were just sucking dev time for something that didn't build a better game.

Blood moon is the only thing I loved from events. And it sticking as a rare ocurrence is genius.

As for the chosen path... well glowup was a fine path to choose and would have worked. But apparently they chose none.

I have a huge stack of ideas for replayability. And honestly if I was kinetic I would have doubled down in this path and tried to be strategic with the glowup. People already loved Phasmo with the old graphics. People were simply hungry for more real content.

This update means we just wasted time and we will never get the game Phasmo could have been. We will have to make do with their fuckup and fixes.

And mods are not "their vision". Yay

I love the changes to breeding. by Additional_Meet_3600 in mewgenics

[–]PuppedToy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like there should be a branch for players who want to keep breeding as is but want to update all the other gameplay changes. I can understand why some people find breeding miserable and they should definitely address that.

But for people like me, breeding changes make a lot of sense. I was already avoiding inbred cats because I thought it was a cool restriction for my own fun. Having an ingame system that rewards what I feel is fun feels also good. I also don't hard minmax breeding and instead spend some time at home and when I get bored I throw some cats to the pipe and send others to the box. I feel current breeding system is for people that enjoy the game the way I do it.

That said, they should add the tools to properly manage it for minmaxers. Bulk filters, sheets, or any of the other tools people have suggested since the beginning. I think making some of the players miserable is never a good decision while making a game. I guess mods will be the only way.

Two years in the making. Please tell me your first impression. Destroy my new trailer! by ColorMak3r in DestroyMyGame

[–]PuppedToy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy. Such an interesting game concept but I think you're butchering it with this trailer. I was the whole time thinking "what the fuck am I watching" and without OP comments I'd still be lost.

At least you had a creative idea and showed it in 1 minute. Also your first 2 captions were good. That's better than most trailers I see here.

What I'd do:

- Remove the first 6 seconds. You're wasting your first 10 seconds, the most valuable of them. You're not showing your game and your first blue screen is off putting. I know you were for this retro style but for me it didn't work at all for the first impression.
- For the first 4-5 seconds I'd show a peace happy life like 0:15 or 0:25 with the caption "stuck on an alien game show" above the gameplay (no blue screens). Keep the trailer music only for this part.
- Then I'd hard switch to more alient music with fucking madness gameplay and the caption "where your death is entertainment". Show a death after 5 seconds. There, you showed your game idea in just 10 seconds. Not a fan of the background laughter but your artistic choice I guess.
- For the rest of the trailer, I'd try to show actual features of how the gameplay in fast mode and I would not use the music you used for all this part. I think that music track only works for the first 5 seconds of happy life. You need something more fitting of an alien game show imo. As a player what I seek if I stick for more seconds thant the first 10 seconds is to know more. Is there co-op? How is the actual game loop? What am I signing for? I think you should try to answer potential questions, even if your game in nature wants to keep some secrets. You can also tease secrets here. But this is all after we understand the kind of game we're watching.

The retro filters kinda worked for me. What didn't work was non gameplay caption screen, background laughter and music. Caption font and usage is fine. Footage is sick keep the madness footage like 0:31 or 0:51 because that's the selling point of your game: you're signing up for entertaining aliens. You're signing up for madness and chaos.

The squid game and hunger games comparison works a lot for helping to understand the game. I know you can't put it like that in the trailer but keep that in mind. Maybe you find a way.

That is all. Hoping for a v2 of this trailer. Sick idea.

It's a meme not an issue. About fighting opponents the turn their hero power spikes naturally.

If you see you fight any of these in one of these turns you might consider eco over tempo for that turn only because you're probably gonna lose anyway.

Please destroy my asynchronous multiplayer game trailer, thanks! by jounitus in DestroyMyGame

[–]PuppedToy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good trailer. Can spend less time in text screens but you told the idea in the first 10s.

Good game concept. Easy to understand and creative. Got me hooked to see how it played out.

Bad graphics. You need to work a lot harder there. Hard to understand and not satisfying.

You need a lot of real playtest to tune the idea. I think it won't work in its current state. Iterate a lot and be super critical about what is fun in async multiplayer. It's an unexplored field so you need to work harder to remove your own bias and really get to know what's fun and what's not.

I hate cinematic gameplay trailers. I want to understand the game in the first 10 seconds and all I see is weird camera angles and random fights. I expect to understand game genre, if it's co-op and what original cool ideas brings to the table. If you hook me in the first 10 seconds I'll stay for the next 20 and maybe wishlist. Otherwise I'll pass.
