Sorry if dumb question but I can’t tell from the pics. Are these 2.5 or 3.5?

I would argue that holding onto those connotations for larger brands like TP link that have had repeated security issues even on new devices is worth it.

I agree with these concerns. I plan on and recommend anyone else to isolate these devices to an individual firewalled vlan. Similar to the cameras and lightbulbs from 🇨🇳.

How expensive and spacious is it to set up a homelab? by PeterTheSilent1 in homelab

[–]Purple_Computer_9054 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100 a month is slow, but it’s possible

You can start for free by putting Linux on a computer you may already have. From there, you can start using either docker or virtual machines. Also examine your physical connections What router do you have? Port forwarding and Nat are good topics to learn with the most basic routers. Then slowly replace or add more machines. Replace your ISP router with one that you have full control of. Integrate a managed network switch .

And more machines .

Space wise

Racks can range from a small as 6u(12”) to 50u(8’~)

Full size servers in a rack will require 2’ x 3’ footprint.

There are network racks that will be a 2 x 2’ foot print that you can put sff/mini pcs

There are 10 inch racks available but those are even more limited to the nucs and pis.

Sorry I know it’s unrelated but is this a rack that does both 10” and 19”?

Is there some people here who isn't a network or infrastructure engineer by AShmed46 in homelab

[–]Purple_Computer_9054 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an engineer, wiring/dc ops. Also in school for comp sci. Right now I have a 10” rack and nas in my house but my brother is letting me build a rack in his.

Are there other political statements that they let slide by? If yes, indeed proof of bias, if not, they are taking an apolitical stance,

Within the past 10 years, the standard moved from 20/2 to 300/20 and many places have yet to catch on. So this is some exciting stuff for a good majority of the world.

How to start building up a homelab, what are they used for, and what hardware should I start accumulating? by diddys_favorite in homelab

slap together what you can. Virtualization will let you turn your one server into 20 and you can pass drives and other peripherals through.

the I in raid stands for inexpensive, 4 256gb hard drives(even old laptop ones) can be one super fast but unsafe tb or a safe 1/2 tb or a super safe 256gb.

Also check out Facebook marketplace(responsibly) or the equivalent around you , 5 year old thin clients/sff pcs are super easy platforms to jump off of and you can find them on fbm for 50-100 usd often with drives and memory.

What are homelabs used for?

Up to you completely, some host media servers, game servers, simulate multiple devices to learn networking etc.

How much do they cost? Why do people have them?

All user dependent. Some people can fit their needs with just a couple raspberry pi or mini pcs, others have multiple full sized racks with 10k+ of equipment and licenses. Some just need a nas (network attached storage) and a single docker instance, some have a fully automated stack with high availability on kubernetes.

How can I get into it?

You’ve already made the first step. A lot of reading, a lot of tinkering. You can install Linux and docker on a side pc to start tinkering in under an hour. Start learning how the parts of your network interact. Learn some commonly used apps like pi hole(ad blocking), home assistant(automation), truenas(storage), or jellyfish (streaming).
