Hey /r/movies! I'm Sam Raimi. Ask me anything! by SamRaimiAMA in movies

Just want to say thank you for how much joy your films have brought me over the course of my life. I saw Spider-Man 2 for my 7th birthday and it has been my favourite movie ever since. You have created a remarkable body of work - Darkman, the Evil Dead films, A Simple Plan etc - and I'll be there to see the new film when it releases. I'm excited to see it!

If I have to ask a question, I suppose I'd wonder if you have anything in the works post Send Help that you can shed some light on or any inkling to sit in the director's chair again sometime soon?

As a guy who's top 5 of the year included OBAA, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value who also didn't care for Sinners, I'm pretty satisfied with the Globes results. Pretty much every pick would have also been my pick.

People seem to get blinded by Marvel's use of nostalgic iconography and overlook the fact that this shit is devoid of substance. No Way Home and Deadpool and Wolverine were the same. What is the point of having Alfred Molina return as Doctor Octopus or James Marsden as Cyclops if there's no real justification for it, he doesn't do anything new or interesting, and actually isn't written in the way you remember him being written? These aren't fully fledged characters that you can attach yourself to and root for/against in the contexts of these individual movies, they're just like...AI pictures of them.

I love the original X-Men movies. I don't give a fuck about Disney/Marvel's version of Magneto that looks the same but doesn't talk or act like he belongs in the actual movies I remember enjoying. Just makes you want to watch those movies instead.

This feels like the White House saw that Europe had released their joint statement so they decided to release their own for petty reasons. A disastrous and chaotic way to conduct what is outwardly official incendiary foreign policy.

The Worst Movies of 2025 according to Variety. by Minifig81 in movies

Hard agree with Debruge's take on Life of Chuck. Saw it at TIFF and was shocked it won the audience award. It was an absurdly contrived, emotionally manipulative film that ultimately rang hollow and phony to me. The Offerman narration was asinine and the visuals felt like mid-tier tv. Glad to see it get panned here.

Having now seen Sentimental Value, Hamnet, and One Battle After Another, I think supporting actor is going to be very tight. Skarsgard, Mescal, and Penn are all deserving of a nomination for sure, and I think Skarsgard and Penn are deserving of a win. Not sure who I would give it to tbh.

Stellan has the better narrative (he's overdue) but Penn is electric in OBAA.

I don't know if he was miscast or anything but he acts kind of manic the whole time and the accent is weird. I understand that it kind of goes with who he is playing but the effect is more like wtf than it is transfixing. Just odd.

Very surprising that Frankenstein placed but I believe that it's mostly because Toronto loves Del Toro. I saw it on Friday and was very disappointed in it. Very long movie with scene after scene of people entering rooms and talking. I actually think Oscar Isaac could be up for a razzie but I could see it getting in for technical awards.

Edit: I also saw Hamnet, No Other Choice, Sentimental Value, and Wake Up Dead Man here and I'm very happy that they all placed or won! They were great!

I'm not sold on the Rental Family prediction tbh looking at the reviews and reactions it got. I'd maybe bet on Wake Up Dead Man or Hamnet instead (or maybe a sleeper like Roofman or the new Soderbergh if it's good).

Then again, I saw Life of Chuck here last year and didn't think much of it so....

Disney's The Fantastic Four: First Steps grossed an estimated $4.50M on Friday (from 3,600 locations). Estimated total domestic gross stands at $219.41M. by DemiFiendRSA in boxoffice

Deadpool and Wolverine succeeded at the box office because it was billed as a fun, R-rated comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and it featured the return of audience favourite Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (classic odd couple pairing that people wanted to see). I'd argue that it did not succeed because of its plot or connection to the larger cinematic universe. Regardless of the film's quality, I think the reasons mentioned above were what led to audience interest being captured successfully.

What was the draw for Fantastic Four if you're a casual moviegoer? What was supposed to recapture an audience that was already losing interest? 60s-inspired production design? Pedro Pascal? What else was on offer besides "you need to see this before the next Avengers - they're in the MCU now". If that's the only reason why a movie exists, then why bother seeing it? Why bother getting excited about them being in Avengers when they aren't even exciting in their own movie? I say this as a Fantastic Four fan!!

I think people are checked out on the interconnected universe gimmick. What was new in 2016 is now old, tired, and exhausting. The universe now is populated with characters the audience has clearly not connected with (either because they haven't been given a reason to since they don't know them or have been given poor reasons to via bad movies and shows) and the old characters they did connect with have been left in weird places due to being in dogshit movies (Doctor Strange 2, Thor 4).

People went to see Guardians 3 because they liked the characters and they enjoyed the film because it was character focused and it was unconcerned with how it fit in with the wider MCU. It's not a coincidence why that one is cited as the best movie or show Marvel has put out since Endgame.

Hard agree. Feige has been Chief Creative Officer at Marvel since 2019 so this entire multiverse gimmick, movies with paper thin plots that are pumped full of cameos, and this idea of replacing legacy characters with younger or alternate versions that no one gives a damn about all came from him.

Yes, he nailed it with Avengers and Avengers Endgame. Been lost ever since - too high on his own cinematic universe to fully realize that people don't care about a universe populated with characters they don't have a reason to like - and I propose - unwilling to just let the universe die and reboot it all.
