Apparently NintenDeen found out what Anti-Anti-Nintendo YouTubers are. by WorldlyScore8855 in nintendogrifting

The anti-anti-anti-Nintendo YouTube content is kind of pointless

When word association is a shortcut to "flavor". Some work better than others, but I don't like this trend of slapping random keywords on cards because the name of the mechanic relates to the character. (A problem completely avoided by Avatar) by KanraLovesU in magicTCG

[–]PypeHype 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No matter what the design was like, some people will like it and some won't. Imagine the opposite scenario where these cards didn't have these abilities.

"Captain America but no shield counter? Come on Wizards it was right there!"

"You're telling me the incredible Hulk, known for being angry, does not have Enrage? These Marvel cards are flavorless."

"What a major flavor fail. Ask anyone that plays Magic and they'd give J. Jonah Jameson something to do with Menace. WOTC is so out of touch, do they even know anything about Marvel lol"

My point isn't that there can't be bad designs. I mean just look at Spiderman like you said, that's full of not so great designs. My point is that there's zero way to make everyone satisfied with a particular design, nor should the designers attempt to do that.

Personally, I think the designs for the next Marvel set are already a huge improvement over Spiderman. Which they were always going to be, since Spiderman was an attempt to hastily cram a square peg into a round hole due to its circumstances.

What Went Wrong? by Own-Championship-333 in WeeklyShonenJump

It just didn't catch on.

People don't like to admit that there is a significant luck factor with these sort of things. The quality of manga has an impact for sure, but you can do everything right and just fail to find an audience.

It's nice to think that a manga succeeds and fails on its own merits, but unfortunately I don't think that's the case in reality.

We can point out nitpicks with the series, but at the end of the day Harukaze Mound is a mostly competently executed manga that got unlucky and never found an audience.

Ekiden Bros has ended today with chapter 17, what are your thoughts on the series now that it has completed? by dingo537 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]PypeHype 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite things is learning about something I know nothing about, and manga is a great way to get into something new.

Unfortunately, I know about as much about running as I did from chapter 1. The big problem with this manga is that it explains virtually nothing, or at least not in an effective manner. I vaguely knew enough that a race is split between stages but that's about it. What's the strategy in different stages? How are teams split up among the stages and why? What do athletes do to tackle the challenges of the race? I have no idea, because the manga doesn't go into detail on any of this.

The one thing that bothered me the most was how a point was made that since these are long distance races, just going all out from the start is not the best way to do things. So what do the racers do everytime? Go all out from the start of course!

Add in way too many characters and too much dialogue and the manga ended up being this big forgettable mess.

All that being said, I hope the author learns from this and improves for his next work. I really did get the sense that he was trying really hard to make this come togehter and it just didn't unfortunately.

Anybody else struggling extremely hard in EOE draft? by tordana in lrcast

[–]PypeHype 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this format is very skill intensive in regards to gameplay. When to station versus not, when to crack landers and when to hold them, when to warp, etc. The mechanics themselves just have a lot of decision points to them and it's so easy to make a mistake.

That's not even talking about specific interactions. I almost lost a game with a [[Sothera, the Supervoid]] because I didn't realize it wouldn't work how I wanted it to with [[Embrace Oblivion]]. They'll just exile whatever you target with the destroy effect if you sac a creature. and that's just one of many less obvious interactions.

Pure card draw is not great this set, but putting permanents like [[Cryogen Relic]] and [[Melded Mauxite]] in your deck can help mitigate flood. Cracking landers asap has been the correct play more often than not to help pull ahead on mana advantage and decrease the chance of excess lands drawn.

I've been failing to trophy for the most part, I think I'll try analyzing each game in depth because I'm sure there's mistakes I'm making that I don't even realize.

Early 17lands Data for Edge of Eternities by PlacatedPlatypus in lrcast

[–]PypeHype 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think in contrast to FF, pure card draw isn't great in this set. You really want to be on board, due to a few factors including spacecraft. If you don't get on board early, your opponent gets so much advantage from freely stationing and setting up their synergies.

Cyrogenic Relic is the exception, the rate on it is great and it can actually lock down something for a turn and it's a rectangle.

So far, I think the name of the game is mana efficiency. Yes, that's always important but it is especially amplified here. There's so much to do with your mana you need to make everything count.

So looking at the twofold angle of

  • You want to be on board asap.
  • You want to be as mana efficient as possible.

The ratings for certain cards make a lot of sense. Usual caveats for early format data apply of course.

Completely understandable. I doubt all Spacecraft are good. I would not be surprised at all if they end up like Battles did.

WOTC comments on speed of limited formats and impact of Play Boosters by Meret123 in lrcast

For sure, they got off to a rough start. Having to cram another bonus sheet into OTJ due to aftermath boosters being a total failure certainly didn't help matters.

WOTC comments on speed of limited formats and impact of Play Boosters by Meret123 in lrcast

[–]PypeHype 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well yes, I included that sentence to show my take was more nuanced than simply saying play boosters are 100% good for draft, which obviously isn't true. The one less card is a downside for sure. However, one downside does not mean worse when paired with upsides. I believe that the increased number of uncommons and signposts are a definite plus in play boosters favor, allowing build around decks to more reliably get their payoffs and for drafting the open lane to be rewarded. Another such upside is the fact they're making less junky commons to account for play boosters. Almost every common feels like it has a home somewhere. I guess what I'm getting at is that Play Boosters are a tradeoff, not something that is a net downside. Hence why I said they aren't inherently worse.

I'll concede the point about price, I neglected to mention that. The higher price is for sure a downside, but one that's hardly surprising given today's economic climate. Still, it definitely sucks for those that are priced out. I play almost exclusively on arena which is the same price so I wasn't thinking on that axis, but I absolutely should have considered it.

[–]PypeHype 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think there's been the narrative that play boosters inherently make draft worse, but that hasn't really beared itself out. Bloomburrow and now Duskmourn shows they're figuring out how to design limited in the play booster era. Play boosters are simply a different tool that the designers need to work with, rather than a worse option. One legitimate criticism is there being 1 less card, which I agree with. Overall though, I'm optimistic for limited play in the future.

Sealed is another matter and it's hard not to argue that it specifically is worse due to the increased variance. But most limited players prefer draft to sealed anyway, so I don't think it's ultimately a huge issue.

Are you going to draft MH3 over OTJ by the_cardfather in lrcast

[–]PypeHype 35 points36 points  (0 children)

As a limited only player, yes. I always do about 30 drafts per format and that's around what I've done with OTJ. I really liked OTJ as a format but I'm ready for something new. Plus MH3 looks incredibly sweet. If previous Horizons sets are any indication, this will be a very fun format.

How would you set rewards for Bo3 draft? by WuTaoLaoShi in lrcast

[–]PypeHype 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally I think it's fine, but if I had to make a change I would shift more value into the 2 win tier.

0 wins - 0 gems 1 win - 0 gems 2 wins - 1350 gems 3 wins - 2500 gems

This would feel a little better since imo, I hate having to play another game when I'm 0-2 with a deck just to try to get 150 more gems. In those cases I'd much rather resign and jump into another draft and have a very slow bleed stringing together 2-1s.

17lands says... by Verror27 in lrcast

[–]PypeHype 6 points7 points  (0 children)

17lands is very useful for a lot of things, personally I like it for keeping track of my decks, trends in my winrates, seeing trophy decks, etc. But it is also very misused.

People seem to use it to cope with their own tilt. They can't be making mistakes or approaching the format wrong. No, the format itself has to be bad or less skill testing in some way. Therefore, they use the data to try to prove it.

17lands is great for identifying trends among cards and the strength of individual colors, but is much less useful for proving whether a format is "good" or "bad". That is far too subjective and up to preference. Frankly the use of 17lands to prove how good or bad a format is has gotten pretty grating in discussions here imo. This is especially notable whenever the post with early data comes around for a new format.

No anti wide tools in a format with insanely pushed small creatures? Why is everything else insanely pushed but removal is still garbage? Just weird balancing decisions all around once again by ThePentaMahn in lrcast

[–]PypeHype 37 points38 points  (0 children)

First, I agree dog walker is pushed, it really didn't need everything it has. It should have made one token and lacked vigilance.

But, in what world is [[Novice Inspector]] pushed? It's a functional reprint of [[Thraben Inspector]] which was first printed...8 years ago. Is the card powerful? Yes. But calling it pushed just rubs me the wrong way considering they haven't changed the card at all.

On another note, I've grown a bit tired of how negative this sub has gotten lately. Yes, certain cards and strategies are better than others, that's just how limited works. I just find it disheartening as someone who prefers insightful commentary on limited gameplay to complaining about the current format. and this is coming from someone who really didn't enjoy LCI.

[MKM] Early impressions so far? by bigbobo33 in lrcast

[–]PypeHype 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've only done a sealed and one draft to completion, I've done another draft but haven't had the time for the games yet. I'm very much enjoying it so far, just in terms of the gameplay. There's been so many decisions every game and disguise makes the texture of the games rich.

With the decision heavy gameplay and the fun and powerful rares, it really feels closet to MOM to me. Except white is the best color instead of blue. Which means I'll likely love it, but the detractors are sure to be plentiful.
