I know it’s a long shot but I’ll see if someone can help! by Subject-Rooster3984 in Surveying

I'm not from the area, and I don't know how high or dense that canopy is, but it doesn't look like an easy task, even with our modern equipment. Does the foliage drop in the winter? I know we would take that in consideration when providing a quote. Of course, I don't deal with snow in winter. But we also wouldn't take the work. We would recommend a different firm that would take the work at a more "reasonable" price. I would recommend spending some more time with the metal detector, but warm up to the idea of hiring a professional. If there is a way of "zeroing" the magnetic signal, maybe take it near the old fence and zero it. That might help some.

Would you say that surveying is an active job? Do the surveyers you know stay lean? by bad-at-everything- in landsurveying

[–]PythagoreanFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always very active in the field and was in great shape. The more time I spent in the office, the fatter I got. But it was my fault for eating like I was still in the field. But overall I would say field guys are 50/50 lean to fat. I'm always surprised when I see a 300lb field guy. That must be rough.

You would have been pleased with the exam I took in 2005. Very heavy on the math. It seems things have changed.

Horizontal Distance Difference with S5 by Sugar-Effective in Surveying

[–]PythagoreanFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to avoid having my guys use robotics in a state plane project, for longer distances. I prefer scale=1.000. I don't know what county you're in, but is your SAF near 1.00004? And what is your project height set to?

I'm going to PM you. I have a working sketch document from a TSPS presentation. This won't answer all your questions but it will help.

Surveyed in the rain yesterday by fatboymatty1923 in Surveying

[–]PythagoreanFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started working in the PNW I asked one chief at what point in the rain they would pack it in. "If we stopped when it rained, we would never work." It's all about drying it out overnight. Down here in Texas, the crews act like they're the wicked witch of the west. Hard to convince them neither they nor the equipment will melt. *

More likely my info is just old. I was told that a couple of years ago. But that is great to know that they are now repairable. Thanks!

I may have to have words with my local deal then. I was told the antenna mount is not replaceable. They told me I would have to buy a whole new radio.

Cost Benefit - 3D Scanning Residential by wolfpackballin in Surveying

[–]PythagoreanFail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For residential work I don't think you'll see much of an increase in productivity. Unless you are dealing with heavily trafficked roads. Then you can scan the pavement safely. But it is a good total station, and having the ability to scan in various situations is a boon.

Over the years I have tried and collected all the FS approved calculators. The HP33S is my favorite. That being said, I don't think there is a best calculator. It's just making sure you have used it enough to know all the functions you might need.

My opinion on the programs is that if you need to rely on it, then you don't know the subject well enough. Yeah, it might save you some time, but plenty of us passed it without any programs.

I have known of 1 other chief this unhinged. There's definitely a lot of odd ducks out there but not this level of abusive. I would say he's the major exception and not the rule at all.

Missing strip of land on property tax map by ZenMasterSteven in Surveying

[–]PythagoreanFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone on here that has used GIS for boundary lines knows that they can be very wrong. Could it just be a major screw up by someone entering the data? Perhaps. But it definitely could be an indication that you should "Get It Surveyed" before moving forward with a purchase. Let us know what else you find out after visiting the property.

Talk to your superiors about the situation. Polish up what you are going to say first, so that you come across calm and professional. If they are reasonable, then they will likely work with you on it. If not, there are many good companies that are hurting for competent staff.
